I ate something similar in Nong Khai. They are fried & soaked in some soy sauce. I bought 4. I ate 3 of them the first was off & the 3rd didn't taste too good either. It made me nauseas for 24hrs, a good fruit shake hides some of the smell.

To put things into context Thais do not eat big platefuls of bugs, they are the equivalent of a packet of chips/crisps in USA and UK except they much higher in protein and much lower in fat than western snacks. Having said that i could not eat that big one, i will stick with the ants..

i'm thai living in bangkok. This insect is call "Mangda" in Thai or "water strider" in english. Yes it looks disgusting. But this insect have it's unique smell i mean good smell. Thais cook it with chili paste (left only the smell, not the whole body like this). For me i forbia to cockroach i will never ever eat it or even just the smell of it. Never! I think in bkk it can only sell to tourists like you. LoL

I wonder if it offends them that you're making it out to be so sick and gross when they survive everyday life by eating these things. It shows that we are spoiled as americans. They find their own food just to survive. A lot of thai in that surrounding area are probably poor and can only afford insects and other small things to eat.
