This is the first modern custom, but it's a shame you have to trailer it. If I had my mitts on this, I'd drive it every day (Harley Earl did). I'd drive it across America. I think this car is right to cruise the Orchard Road, Singapore.
i love cars alot.i restore cars for a living.i own and operate a hot rod and muscle car restoration shop.but something about this just doesnt do it for me.im in awe of harley j.earls work alot of times.but this just doesnt do it for me.wish i could see what harley was seeing with this.maybe if it had a top.....milner's speed and custom shop in york s.c.
I've heard stories that Harley was driving it to work, or something, and he had a flat tire. He stopped in a service station to get it checked out. Someone tried to help him replace the tire, and as they were disassembling the tire, they couldn't figure out how to get the wheel cover off of the wheel well. Just tells how unique the vehicle is.
This is the most beautiful, stunning and stylish car I've ever clapped my eyes on! the ultimate in style and design, it would have stolen the show at the New York Worlds Fair in 1939, to me that would be its natural habitat among all the fabulous architecture at the Worlds Fair. Thanks for posting it's a feast for the eyes to behold. UK Fan.
A true example of what Buick was capable of, even seventy years ago. The engine alone, an all-aluminum V-8, with separate carbs for gas and alcohol,hemi-head, 215 cu in, 300 hp was/is an engineering masterpiece and led to the 1953 vertical-valve (nailhead) V-8 and the compact 1961 Special's powerplant. Now GM is attempting to sell America jap clones,as if ! Return to building REAL Buicks and see what the sales charts will do. If I wanted a Hondtoyonismits, I'd have bought one, no thanks!!!!
That Y-Job is an amazing piece of machinery. To look at it, you wouldn't think it was made in 1937/38. Back then, the car looked 10-15 years ahead of its time.
If you mean the Chrysler Airflow, with its radical aerodynamic styling and advanced engineering, that was a production vehicle, not a concept car. It didn't sell well and was discontinued after 1937.
Pierce-Arrow built six streamlined "Silver Arrow" specials in 1933. That car had beautifully sleek, futuristic styling, but was mechanically conventional.
@alexpfaff True That. He used a lot of the architecture from that on many other Buicks in the later years. It was basically an inspiration for other concepts. And a milestone in engineering of cars. He actually used it as a personal car for years, tells you how well put together it was.
@sneyder69 Well, it is considered as such, being that it was the first car made expressly as a platform to present future car design to the public, earlier advanced design models were for in-house use only
Hell no, it has never been restored. It's one hunderd percent original. I'll tell ya this, and that's a fact: Everything is orginal and the enigine has NEVER been revised. Never! The only thing that needs replacement is a busted O-rubber for the 'eye lids'
At some point in the car's history, the retractable headlights and specially designed bumpers were replaced with stock production headlights and bumpers. Those items have since been restored to their original appearance.
I personally got the hydraulic powered windows operating a few years ago. They had been inoperative since before the car was laid up at the Henry Ford Museum. We also performed other maintenance work at that time, brakes, shocks etc. The car has NOT been restored. There have been some maintenance operations as required. The headlights and grille have been changed back and forth. My good friend at Design did much work rebuilding the power top . It WAS the car that started the concept car race.
yep, it was really amazing to be in the presence of the famous Y-Job. The people really flocked to that one. The LeSabre also drew quite a bit of attention.
That thing is MASSIVE!!!! TRULY a great piece of human engineering! Thank you for posting! I've dreamt about this beautiful car since I've been a kid! thanx!

Damn! It's been my most favorite car since first reading about it in magazines in Jr. school in the mid 1980's.
I still love the design! my current car sucks! I'd give up my 8 airbags, navigation system, HD music system, and all the new crap for the Y!

The first concept car ever. And of course it runs, it was Harley Earl's car for trips all over the world to showcase what Buick could do with cars.

"It actually runs and Drives!"
Meaning, that it it has been cared for well and still runs and drives. Actually I think it was restored

Superman didn't need a car -- he could fly!
Or are you thinking of Batman?
In the 1949 movie serial, Batman's "Batmobile" was a factory-stock Mercury convertible.
