Kariya was out for 6 seconds before coming to with the breath that fogged his mask. I was at this game, and to see that hit and watch him stumble to the bench, come back and score that goal was legendary!

If it were a third grade concussion he would have been unconcious for a long time, depends on where you're diagnosed but a third grade concussion the lowest is one hour. So he has a second grade or below concussion and I've had and known people with second and third degree concussions.
BTW A third degree concussion is what usually causes a coma and we know crosby isn't

Crosby's concussion is not nearly as serious as he acts like it is. Sure it's bad but it's grade one or maybe grade two. I've had a similar concussion to his original not fun but not that huge of a deal. People with grade three concussions complain less of them than crosby has of his.

I think the day is going to come where the only purpose of a body check is to separate the player from the puck. In truth, Kariya had already released the puck & Stevens could've tried to avoid him. Other than to inflict pain this hit serves no purpose. I don't think hockey should turn into the pussy sport the masses want it to turn into, but at the same time just because a player is in motion going in the direction of a specific player doesn't mean he has to absolutely hit him.
On the other hand, the hit does fit into the category of taking the player out of the play just seconds after he released the puck. By the letter of the law though this is interference. Chara's hit on Pacioretty earlier this year is another example of interference. I don't think Stevens was a dirty player. I liked him a lot. I have mixed opinions on hits like this one. Where the player who got hit had the puck 1 or 2 seconds prior to the hit. It's a fast and intense game.
@shshao the Rome hit was a lot later though. It's about puck possession too and Kariya literally JUST got rid of the puck. This was not really late. Stevens had him lined up and hit him RIGHT as he got rid of it. Rome's hit on Horton was almost 2 full seconds after he got rid of it. Rome could have avoided that hit. He hesistated too, after Horton made the pass so you know he was a little "iffy" about making the hit at all. Just decided to go with the "why not" philosophy instead.
@shshao Kariya was barely midway through his second stride when he was hit. This was not identical, there was a full second longer and much more of a stride before the Rome hit.
People need to realize the Pens are playing this the right way concussions are nothing to fool around with. As much as I want to see Sid play again they are doing it the right way. Look at what happened to guys that came back early from concussions hint Eric LIndros and Keith Primeau both had their careers shortened also look at what Patrice Bergeon went through for a while and look at what has happened to Marc Savard

Hitting is fine but they need to make concessions when appropriate to maintain the competitive nature of the game. paul kariya's career started to go downhill after the hit. he was never the same player again. he played a year bwith the avs where he rejoined selanne. he then signed with the predators for 2 years, before playing 3 years for the st. louis blues.

I think the day is going to come where the only purpose of a body check is to separate the player from the puck. In truth, Kariya had already released the puck & Stevens could've tried to avoid him. Other than to inflict pain this hit serves no purpose. I don't think hockey should turn into the pussy sport the masses want it to turn into, but at the same time just because a player is in motion going in the direction of a specific player doesn't mean he has to absolutely hit him.

On the other hand, the hit does fit into the category of taking the player out of the play just seconds after he released the puck. By the letter of the law though this is interference. Chara's hit on Pacioretty earlier this year is another example of interference. I don't think Stevens was a dirty player. I liked him a lot. I have mixed opinions on hits like this one. Where the player who got hit had the puck 1 or 2 seconds prior to the hit. It's a fast and intense game.

@shshao the Rome hit was a lot later though. It's about puck possession too and Kariya literally JUST got rid of the puck. This was not really late. Stevens had him lined up and hit him RIGHT as he got rid of it. Rome's hit on Horton was almost 2 full seconds after he got rid of it. Rome could have avoided that hit. He hesistated too, after Horton made the pass so you know he was a little "iffy" about making the hit at all. Just decided to go with the "why not" philosophy instead.

Hitting is fine but they need to make concessions when appropriate to maintain the competitive nature of the game. I don't mind a defensemen rubbing out a forward on the boards as long as it's n/s - south/north because they should be well prepared. Blind side is pure goonish.

Giving space and position to the other team is giving them the advantage, Scott Stevens reminded many that he didn't give up any ground to anybody. Never put your head down, never admire your passes; been tought that since 13.

paul kariya's career started to go downhill after the hit. he was never the same player again. he played a year bwith the avs where he rejoined selanne. he then signed with the predators for 2 years, before playing 3 years for the st. louis blues.
kariya is out for the season and it looks like he might never play again. and it's all because of this hit.

Even under the "NEW" rules for hitting this is a valid hit; it is not a blindside, it's head on. Kariya was admiring his pass instead of having the awareness on the ice. Don't skate east-west on the ice looking the other way, less you like feeling gravities effects.

They did deserve the cup that year. Marty played very well and the team played great. Ducks relied heavily on Giguere.
