  • I've noticed this "magic negro" stereotype aswell. it's wierd how racism is gone yet there does seem to be some kind of after affect on the media (i.e. TV, movies etc.)

  • I get what you mean. There's a lot of truth to what you're saying. I'm gay, fyi

  • goes to show gays can be sellouts, too.

  • The only way that a majority can make a minority feel benieth them is if people are dumb enough to believe the lie. It's the same thing with religion. It only has power if you believe the predjudice. I act the way I like to act, and If you want to call it stereotypical, that's up to you.

  • Minorities are very powerful when it comes to society. You're just mad that you are no longer the minority and I am. Deal with it nigger,

  • I don't care how people live their lives. Do want you want if it makes you happy.

I made this vid because it seemed like people treat gays like they're some kind of novelty; liking them not because of who they are as a person, but because they act in a way they find amusing.

  • My guess is that YOU don't like gay people; and the only explanation you're homophobic mind can conclude of why others would like us is because they find us amusing or enjoy our novelty. I'm sorry but you're wrong. I'm liked because I'm smart and cool and people like MY personality.

  • You'd guess wrong. What I'm saying is if people can be hated with no regard to who they are as an individual, then I don't think it's impossible that the opposite could be true as well.

  • Again I think you are being prejudice. People like me for who I am WITH regard to who I am as an individual. I think that is hard for you to fathom because you are conditioned by old time society and you just don't want that to be so.

  • That's not surprising. You seemed set in your opinion of me from the start.

Just because someone makes critical statements doesn't necessarily mean they're against someone or some group.

  • Come on, I didn't come into this discussion set against you. I actually think the idea you brought up in this video was a relatively deep one. But I also think you brought it up because of inferiority. You have your opinion about us gays not really being liked for who we are, and I have my opinion about you, which is that you have a problem with gay people being liked. Truly liked for who we are. This is obvious when you talk about and describe Chris.

  • smell

  • I appreciate you doing this video, because I didn't know about this phrase of 'magical negro'. Though, quite aware of todays perpetuating stereotypes for minorities. It's so ubiquitous liking these stereotypes, but hating it at the same time. People need to wake up and decide what they want in this life. Also, I didn't think your video was offensive, but your title had me assuming.

  • You never seen Hancock... Hancock Puts fere into all men around the world no matter what color or sex type...

  • Another interesting view.

    Especially the magical negro part.

If I could afford a cam I would make a video inspired by yours and give you due credit.

I would call it the magical gay youtuber negro.

    That would be interesting.

  • I was with you until the 6 minute mark, when you began repeating yourself all over again. People are people dude, they're shallow as fuck and they're always going to be shallow as fuck. People are desperate to be liked, and sure..magical negro, gay youtuber, terrorist achtmed or redneck randy dude...stereotypes are an easy way to write people off and most people cannot be troubled to deal with anyone but themselves and their 'cliq' so they use the stereotypes to write them off completely.

  • An example, I have a semi-flambouyant gay coworker. And a friend of mine for years is gay as well. He is about 6 foot 6 , 280lbs, looks like a weightlifter and we train in marital arts together.

  • I had a party and my coworker came and while i was chatting up a girl outside, this guy is in there(some guest of someone) was talking about how gays act like this and gays act like that. So my old friend taps him on the shoulder and asks the guy 'do you have a problem with gay people because I am gay.' the guy froze... turned white as a sheet and promptly ran out of the party.

  • That doesn't mean shit and doesn't pertain even one bit to my previous comment. People use stereotypes to write others off. Period.

  • Well the stereotype in my example was of the feminine flaming gay guy. And my masculine gay friend was outside that stereotype.

The fact that you assume that 'most' people 'cliw' up shows that you yourself write people off with stereotypes. hypocrite.

  • '...that 'most' people 'cliw' up' <-- what? Are we having difficulty taming our keyboard today? lol.

Hypocrite? HA! I write people off because I'm too busy to deal with them and most people are not worth my time. You don't have room to talk about anything. You don't even show your face, because you are spineless.

  • seems like someone may have deep rooted issues that they cannot seem to get over for lack of self disclipline.

lolz, calling me spineless because I did not post a photo... mwahaha.. thats funny.

    thanks for the laugh.

  • I must thank you for the return laugh. I love to break it to ya, but 'seems like someone may have deep rooted issues that they cannot seem to get over for lack of self disclipline.' is nothing but a series of words you threw into the little box. That accusation doesn't even make sense. You won't be able to outwit me, I promise. Quit while you are ahead.

  • outwit you? why do I need to do something that you have already done in your own life?

especially when all of your little quips actually apply to you.

I'll bet you were the guy who talks a lot of crap but cannot back it up in a real fight.

    lolz.

  • Once again, you do not make any sense. Why do you need to outwit me when I have already done it myself? That is an oxymoron, dumb shit. I don't fight by the way, because I use intelligence as a weapon. You could easily beat my ass, masked man...and I would revel in it. However, upon my return home to nurse my wounds, I would use my time and my money to destroy your life. Tear you apart from the inside out. Bruises heal, bones mend...but some things that can be tampered with never heal. ;-)

  • intriguing. you assume that I lack money and resources to defend against you. and you assume that you would be left alive to exact revenge, should I ever even choose to lower myself and waste time and effort to lay hands upon the wretched mite that you are.

  • Do some research on me dude, who I am and what I do. Then try to measure your pole against mine. Here pretty soon, you will be able to brag to all your little buddies about how you set 'Mike-C' straight on YouTube son, because he aint got shit on me. Try to measure your manly pole and your money pole to mine and you will fall tremendously short, 'sport. ;-)

  • why waste my time bucko....

for the most part this internet thing is all fun and games to me.

and i have rn across your kind on many different sites.

the whipped and beaten little emo cur who hates the world.

dude, seriosuly my friends would laugh if they knew i even traded quips with a subhuman like yourself.

  • That type of speech is why you can't ever get any pretty girlfriends, dude. Ever seen that movie Grandma's Boy? The weird dude in the black trenchcoat, subhuman robot voice! That is you bro. You know what I'm saying...how you look at every gorgeous woman and ask yourself...how can I get a girl like that. Why didn't God make me good looking and preppy so I could score a beautiful woman like that? That's why dude, because you're a fucking weirdo.

  • your lack of intelligence and verbal fencing skill shows.

i really do not need to insult you because your weak assumptions show how much you and a dumb farm animal have in common.

i could sit here and try to one up you by bragging on my accomplishments.

however braggarts are usually known to be far less successful than they complain to be.

seems life you are trying to prove yourself to me.

which means you see me as superior.

  • lol....alright, I can't do it anymore man. This made me laugh so hard I kind of feel bad now. You seem like you have some kind of special learning program dilemma or something. You can't even assemble words in the right order, I'm real sorry for giving you a hard time little guy. Take care.

  • as if a childish imbecile like yourself could actually give me a hard time.

go away little girl before i inform your parents that you are playing with grown men.

  • Strike three, you're out! ;-)

That shit is so weak man, bring something that packs potency. All these tired putdowns were around when I was like, 12 dude and that was like...oh, 12 years ago?

Time to catch up 'Jabroni. Got your parent putdowns, your googling the word 'imbecile' so you knew how to spell it right, your obvious fascist nature of web sites and conversation and lets not forget the closet tweaker you so obviously are.

Seriously, If I throw a stick, will you leave?

  • hilarious.

obviously you're still 12 in mental age.

anyone who combines a generalized negative view with fake self esteem has already lost at life.

  • yeah, that HAS to be it. That's why I'm about to start working on a Spike! TV television show, have possibly three major label deals on the table at the moment, attended Leathers Meets Lace 2 @ Playboy and am scoring a movie as well as acting a cameo in it that is being considered an option by both Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

Because I have totally fake self-esteem...man, what a loser I am.

  • thanks for providing enetertainment.

    i expected no less.

    be well.

    ciao'.

  • LOL! You are dead set on feeling 'superior' with those backside putdowns aren't you? You can't use that type of thing against someone who is smart dude, I'm sorry but you're flat broke and busted.

  • btw. thank you for the laughs , angry little person. actually participating in this has reminded me why I chose the warrior path so long ago. to avoid the general negativity and condescension that your posts show to people.

    fare the well, traveller.

    mwahahahahahaha.

  • Grow up, dude. I know your mom laughs at all your jokes and your childish bruhaha...but it doesn't cut the mustard in the real world 'chief.

  • thats a great attempt at a weak insult.

    try better next time.

maybe actually getting some self esteem would help you.

  • ok?

  • Perhaps the gay/lesbian community needs it's own version of MLK?

  • +1 internets to you

    Thanks for this video!

    5 starz

  • This is exactly why they are 'famous'. EXACTLY. Amusing Sterotypes. Brilliant.

  • I missed this video somehow and someone that called me the other day was raving about how great it was. Just sayin'...

There's def. something to this but I need to think about it more before I make an ignorant comment. Another thought provoking vid though, Stranger.

  • Yeah I've missed a quite a few videos because of that damn, malfunctioning subscription bar.

  • Magical negro syndrome, indeed. Good contrast.

  • Men have been emasculating themselves for decades to suit the cry of women for equality. We should really be focusing on the issue of men deminishing their masculinity to suit society's intolerance and fear of male dominance. Just a random thought.

  • It depends. Have you ever tried to sell a woman a lovely handbag or a sensible pair of bikini panties while maintaining a macho attitude? I think not.

  • Yes, I agree. Many men are accepted in fields as long as they act like less than men. Perhaps that has more to say about society's intolerance of real men and traditional male behavior in society.

  • Then we must define what a real man is. And by whose terms do we reach such a definition? It's not an easy social question to resolve, but I appreciate your offering it for discussion.

  • As a vlogger who also happens to be homosexual (notice the phrasing) who is educated and intelligent you've articulated and expressed this exactly right. Excellent. Please notice also that even in your comment section gays themselves will try to dismiss this discussion or explain it away to a certain degree. There is still a lack of owning that we are willing to tolerate a stereotype for acceptance.

  • Additionally, without fail, in almost any discussion like this every aggrieved group must at least once point out how much they are also discriminated against. In other words, oneupmanship "my status of being discriminated against as a woman, black, hispanic, etc. is worse than yours as a gay" or the message is "we're a better minority than you", "our being discriminated against is more important than yours" and we let it slide every time...

You've opened a great topic, let's see what happens.

  • theestranger, yeah- i think you're on to something, it's the sterotype that's finding fame. great question at the end, playing the sterotype, furthers that sterotype, maybe. fascinating question. peace.

  • That said , I think the key to my success on YT is having the other channel so people can see me at home just talking about my husband and dogs and real life stuff....im rambling! LOL

    Good video! Michael "Buck"

  • Thanks for sharing your insight Michael.

  • i hear ya. and its funny cuz when i made a colab about the top gays on you tube- the joke was how we all kinda fit gay sterotypes. people always ask me if I am WTB in real life and it really is an EXTREME version of me. LOL On peron75 - i am vlogging and hyper but more myself. WTBS is scripted for laughs and I talk fast and act bitchy becuase I find it humorous and the audience enjoys it.

  • don't forget the gaygod

  • Alright good video theestranger, i liked it but I think you need to make a part 2 to this. Why? well because. Sadly the world and some people accepts people on certain terms for everyone especially youtube like with the:

    Obama girl= hot chicks

    thewinekone= funny guy

Even when it comes to being African American on youtube, if you aren't in music or cussing or acting silly, sometimes people won't accept. And if people were to change their style sometimes people would not be able to handle it.

  • I think What the Buck, Chris Crocker, William Sledd aren't creating or perpetuating the stereotype on purpose they just saw everything form queer eye for the straight guy and Isaac Mizrahi and thought i could do that to. I don't think they saw it as perpetuating anything other than gay media. Thye end up perpetuating the stereotype, but it could be themselves in the end. Just like I'm sure that Louis Armstrong wasn't planning on perpetuating the lovable black singer stereotype.

  • Great vid.

  • Then again,I am tired of seeing the fake boobs, lips so full chemicals that it looks like someone punched them repeatedly, colored contacts, fake moles etc. and the general idea that everyone should look and act exactly the same. Shame that the mainstream media has everyone thinking that they have to look or act a certain way to fit in. Although when I was younger I was quite vain, now I realize just how shallow and idiotic it is to try to be accepted and admired by others. Variety is a good thing.

  • "Shame that the mainstream media has everyone thinking that they have to look or act a certain way to fit in."

Actually, that's mostly your neighbors and you will find the same thing in places with no access to mass media. Or just have a look see at all the "community" minded videos here, most of which are 'be like me or you're scum. Group hug.'

  • I am particularly amused by one well meaning, but over earnest user who assails tribalism as being against the spirit of community, but whose vision of community appears to be, 'Join MY tribe or I'll hit you with my e-club."

  • For what it's worth, you haven't offended me and, from reading the other comments, I dare say you haven't offended anyone else, gay or straight. I wholeheartedly agree with your premise. Regrettably, the term "community" has become a euphemism for conformity. I agree with airricksreloaded: we are many; gays, that is. Thanks for posting this! :)

  • Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts!

  • Whew, way to go after a tough topic and a controversial one as well. While everyone who knows me at all realizes that I am probably the most liberal person on YouTube or that you will ever meet. However, while I support the rights of homosexuals and even gay marriage,I am starting to really get tired of seeing these "more feminine than any female" gay men on every show or web site. Not that I hate them or anything, just that I think it is a bit of overkill and you are spot on with this vid bro.

  • As for your question at the end of this vid..yes,I do think in the end the stereotype that is being put out there will hurt the gay community in the end. I guess that they are just so happy to finally start to be accepted by the mainstream that they are just going a little overboard which is understandable. I am happy for any person, race or nationality that has overcome oppression and hate. I am just sort of tired of seeing these "flaming, catty, overblown" gay types everywhere I turn..LOL. Peace.

  • You'd better not look at what just got featured on the main page... lol

  • After watching this video it kind of hit me that you really seem to have taken the torch from GregSolomon in terms of tackling controversial issues, calling spades spades, and actually making sense when you do it. The only difference is that you are a little more laid back while Greg was super serious (which I think was a little bit of a facade he was putting on anyway).

  • GayGod's another big user, but I wanted to focus mainly the gay YouTubers that are popular on YouTube, but have also crossed over to conventional mainstream media.

  • ohhhh!

  • I'm trans, so i feel especially bothered by Chris Crocker (he's actually a drag queen, not transgender, but people get them mixed up, and i understand why); the LGBT community has been reduced to vicious stereotypes, and i, for one, am weary of answering for the media understanding of transgenderism. The problem is that we're all so hungry to be recognised as human beings that some of us sieze the opportunity with or without our dignity intact. I hope we overcome this burden in my lifetime.

  • TS, your videos always make me think. The 'magical negroes' reference was unfamiliar to me before I checked out that link. You really are thought provoking.

  • Yeah, the "magical negro" is really common in myths and legends throughout Louisiana and parts of the deep south. Creole country. A site called Folkstreams has a lot of classic documentaries on storytelling, myths, religion and legends of the south and other regions and nations. A lot of history concerning folk, blues and other styles of music that are native to certain areas such as the deep south,Appalachains etc. You can find some of the same "feeling" as this topic.

  • If I don't come up with a title whilst I'm making a video it normally takes me til a good while after I've finished editing to think of one. I think it has a real effect on how the viewer takes it in, since if their expectations aren't met or a crucial piece of information about what you are addressing is left out it can often leave people confused about what exactly you were aiming for.

  • To be honest I had no clue where you were going with it because I'd never come across 'magical negroes' before, but the moment you spoke about it in entertainment other examples like Green Mile and The Shining shot into my mind

  • good call...too bad jack had to stick an axe into scatman's back. cheers!

  • LOL..good reference leaf.

  • i think, in the book, Dick Haloran (scatman crothers) lives, and retires with Wendy and Danny in florida...been too long since i've read the book! peace

  • I love old Scatman. Interesting fellow in real life. It has been so long since I have read the book. I think the first "adult" novel that I ever read was "Salems Lot" one helluva book. I would not mind re-reading that one. Stephen King..to me he is either great or terrible..no in between. Some of his novels I have loved and others I just couldnt get into them at all. Same thing with Koontz. I guess my favorite as far as suspense would be John Sandford and his "Prey" series of novels. Peace.

  • I watch that film everytime and I still somehow think that after driving all that way he's not gonna get it. But he always does!

  • Another example would be the old black lady in "The Stand".

  • Mother Abaigail, yeah....great book. peace

  • I agree

  • Me, too.

  • great video strange man...though i would have to say that the gay community is represented by others that do not promote a stereotype such as airricksreloaded. he is someone that has done well here and comes across as "normal" without selling out with a gimmick so to say. people will follow what others have suceeded with, it's all over youtube. great video again. cheers!

  • That's the great thing about this particular medium, the opportunity to be exposed to a diversity of opinion and beliefs and culture as opposed to just being projected AT us.

  • totally agree strange man. cheers!

  • Woah the title made me shudder. But I was quickly reassured by the bagger vance comparison

  • I had a hard time trying to title this video, trying to reflect the subject matter without seeming offensive, but everything came out super long.

I'm trying to go with blunt and to the point so it's provocative without being sensational or offensive.

  • You did a wonderful job,as usual,Stranger. Love your viewpoints and the way you arrive at them...the whole process if fascinating. Really glad to have you back vlogging on a regular basis bro!

  • Good points all round, stranger.

  • i view the gay stereotype as similar to the chinese stereotype of 60s/70s american comedies - i dont think any chinese people were proud to be represented in that way, and doubt much of the gay community is proud to be represented this way either.

  • i finally read the article and i am glad for all this discussion.

i see your points. and yes, i think mass marketing damages content. i think mass marketing may be damaging b/c it simplifies in a way that makes things kind of a lie. this is just as harmful to white men, portrayed as wife beating husbands.

yeah i cant do this one in 500 characters, i feel like raven (love ya!)

watching buck has to do w the intelligence behind the jokes, at least for me.

  • who is to say that shows like good morning america arent "gay" looking as shows? all teh cheesy graphics and shit.

i do think that media will pigeonhole to get the money sometimes.

but maybe this impression you have gotten also has to do w individual perception.

    =)

  • You did a great job manouvering(sp?) through the mine-field. Great vid, I think you are right about them being only popular because they are only portraing a stereotype.

I have no clue if the average person is able to diferentiate between the act he sees on youtube and how (gay) people act when not on camera.

  • I don't think that's their popularity is solely because of the stereotype (with the exception of Crocker), but I think that it may contribute significantly to their popularity.

Buckley is good at what he does, I can't argue that.

  • I made a video kind of on topic with this a while back, posting it as a response.

  • I do like Buckley, I think he has something special, but I could be biased, I dont know. I really dont buy into the Chris Crocker talent thing, I think to me he is just another guy, I see guys like him everynite @ work. William Sledd to me has a personality, but I agree, his fame is from his exploitation of his stereotype. I get really attacked and beat up in the gay community because of my beliefs on this issue. I just think that the media portrays us as ONE kind, and we are many. Gays that is.

  • I agree that there's no talent when it comes to Crocker, and personally he comes off as a jerk, but at the same time he has a considerable following, and once that Britney video came out, all of a sudden there's people wanting him to wear their products and offers of tv deals.

I saw that Sledd has a reality show coming out and I'm interested in seeing how that's going to be presented to the public.

  • And this interest by the media in such people goes to prove that they are encouraging the public to stereotype everyone within a particular group.

  • interesting.
