  • People that breed dogs like this need to go to prison or be shot!

  • I am not sure if you are still getting e-mails on your Cassie, but we have a lovely

16 month old who had an MRI a few months ago after scratching episodes but no pain or any other symptoms. It showed a mild Occipital Dysplasia but no SM. Meds given were Gabapentin which did not help. So another Neurologist suggested no meds and see what give. So she scratches but is very lively and

we hope this doesn't turn into SM. If you know anything else let me know.

Hoping Cassie is fine as a good CKCS is.

  • Thank you for posting this. My baby is a 6 month old ruby who has recently been having episodes of scratching on her neck and I am hoping that this is not a sign of SM. She has been deemed healthy by our vet with no parasites or ear infection, so I worry.. She just woke up to a scratching fit as I finished typing this! I hope your dog has many happy and pain free years ahead, and I hope my little Rosie and other Cavaliers do too. They truly are one of the sweetest breeds in the world.

  • After seeing the ABC video we had our Cavalier checked and were advised to gat an MRI. We found out Friday that our dog does have SM and it is a "dramatic case". We started medication and after the Holidays will have to decide what is the best course ofa ction. Our dog is 2 years old. If I was looking for a Cavalier now I would not even consider one from a breeder that could not show a clear MRI of both parents. The MRI and spinal tap is expensive -- about $2400.0 but worth it.

  • wow i thought after seeing the breeding show on ABC that the signs were teh scratching. Ours does the scratching and im praying that its just a skin irritation, but now that ive seen these clips whre they rub their heads on the floor, i thought that was just a play/attention seeking thing, coz our maltese cross does this and starts playing....

  • I would never consider breeding from any of my dogs, unless I was 100% certain neither he or the mate were absoloutely healthy, it's just irresponsible breeding otherwise...I wish more Cavi breeders would wake up to their respnsibilities with these wonderful dogs

  • My youngest cavi Dylan, now 14mnths has I fear this awful condition...he rubs himself along the carpet often & is very sensitive around his ears & neck. He is fine on the lead & pulls like mad, it's just when he's stroked around his neck & ears. I am having his ears checked 1st to rule out Primary Secretory Otitis Media (PSOM), But it doesn't look good for my little one...he is the 5th cavi I have had over the years, my 1st tri-colour & I adore him, as I have all my boys.

  • i am getting worried about my puppy, she does this face rubbing a fair bit, and scratches her neck often, she sometimes welps when we pick her up, so just monitering her i hope i am just paranoid and that she will be fine :)

  • hi

not to worry you but this was what casssie was like from a small puppy when i started to get concerned about how she was. if you have her insured take her to the vets and they will refer her for an mri scan which is covered by your insurance. this is the only true way of telling if she has this or not.. some dogs do not get severe with this condition and can lead quite a good quality of life, please let me know how you get on i wish you all the best..

  • Thanks for your advice that was realy kind of you, she is insured with full cover, even with a lifetime problem she is covered, thank goodness!!, may i ask what have you done to help cassie? are they going to relieve her symptoms with the surgery? let me know thanks, i will get back and let you know what the vet will say, its good to have someone out there who can understand :)

  • hi

we have decided agaist surgery as it will not cure her or stop the symtons she already has, it is a very abusive surgery and some other people we know had it done on their dog and the dog suffered and it made no difference at all, we are just enjoying her and hoping she will not get any worse!! as long as she is still playing with her ball i know shes alright we will cross that bridge when it comes, please let me know how you get on best of luck with everything xx

  • will do. for now the vet says she is fine, and that over 90% of these cavaliers carry the defect, that some can live very good lives with a mild form, she hasnt got that bad, so he asked us to moniter her behaviour, and to bring her in if it gets worse, at the moment it isnt that bad, i hope she will be ok when she is older, if not we can only be there for our pets, its sad for many owners out there, and more should be done with breeding, i wish you the best and cassie, take care thanks alot X

  • that's how Chester started but he is still alive and living comfortably with 4 mthly episodes. He is 5 yrs old.Good luck Nancy

  • what kind of episodes? because im getting worried about my cavalier.. she has almost all the symptoms

  • AWW. Is she your dog?

I am so sad for you. I saw the pedigree dogs exposed show and it has changed my view on dogs forever. I have always been a huge lover of dogs and also a fan of Crufts but now i hate those stuck up snobs with their poxy breed standard. But yeah, i really do feel sorry for owner and dog. if there's anything i can do, subscribe, message, i'll do it. :D

  • thankyou for you message i will thankyou xx

  • hey

my CK spaniel has also got SM

    :(

  • I did everything right by the book, great breeders, both parents great health etc. and my cavalier has a million health problems :( my vet said they are getting so bad as a breed that eventually nature will take over and they will all be infertile! I love my dog more than anything in the world, but she will be the only cavalier I ever have. Its too sad for words. :( :( Breeders should immediately start mixing them with other kinds of spaniels to get better DNA.

  • same here its not right is it!!

    thanks for your e-mail

  • Bad news, were taking our to the vet on Monday to let her go. She's constantly scratching is having an attack 2-3 times a week. Enough is enough, she's clearly not enjoying life.

  • i`m really sorry to hear that you have had to have your dog put to sleep! we have watched cassie become worse over the last week so do not know what the future holds for her. but llike you will not let her suffer xx

  • Our is a just a year old, and is going for an MRI on Friday. MRI's can cost up to £2000 a scan, we managed to get one for £250. Currently on anti-inflamitory, which have helped alot.

  • good luck with your scan on friday hope all goes well. ask questions if they ask you to put your dog on drugs after the scan. cassie was put on some to get rid of water retention but they held her back she was always thirsty and could not control her bladder. it was sad to see her like it so we took her off them. good luck again let me know how it goes

  • I have got cavalier too !

    Not healty, not sick...

    Nobody knows :/

  • hi

what problems does your dog have??

mri scans are the only way to know for definate if a dog has sm

  • I feel so bad for you. I have a King Charles too but luckily she is very healthy. They are such sweet and lovable dogs. I'm glad they made that documentary on the bbc to make people aware. I watched it even though it really upset me.

  • i`m so glad your dog is healthy enjoy her

  • this is what happens when greedy breeders breed mother & son dogs. So sad! Good luck to you and your lovely dog. Hopefully the programme on BBC1 the other night has sent out a clear message to anyone that is thinking of buying a puppy whether it be Cavalier or whatever breed. These scum breeders who are inbreeding these dogs are destroying families and need to be caught & prosecuted!

  • what can i say your right greddy breeders only in it for the money, Dont care about the welfare of the dogs, or the pain they go through or the pain the familes go through! Hopefully the bbc program has made people more aware and also shown up some of these breeders for who they are!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • are dog dose that he starts screemin and wimpers all day he rips of his furr 2 i think he has got it it aint fleas or his glands so mabe i hope not

  • hi

sorry to say but it does sound like your dog is displaying these signs, you should get it checkout if your dog is wimpering is sounds as though it is in a lot of pain which is not fair on the dog im sorry to hear you may be experiencing the same problems as us good luck

  • if he dose do we hav 2 get him put down or do we still keep him even thoe he is in pain

  • there are some pain managment drugs avalible, take him to see your vet, you can also get good information from the caviler talk website As long as your dog is still living a happy life then i would not have him put to sleep we have always said that day that cassie stops wanting to play with her ball we would know what to do, also have you got him insured as a mri scan would tell you for sure if he has sm? good luck let me know how you do>

  • thanks for posting this video. i am a dog lover and own 5 dogs, and thankfully they are all very healthy. that dog is absolutely gorgeous. its wonderful that she can still play and have some fun. hope she continues to do well.

  • hi
