You are disgrace for ART DRAWING world. What a hell are you doing?? Drawing like this when doesnt even look like the model, model here is unnecesarly. Who paid this for you is disgraced. Find a real artist for portrait then this sucking man.
I think it is incredible that you got that close likeness of the baby while it was squirming around! I think the only thing that was noticebly off was the eyes. The baby you drew was obviously asian, but the eyes were just generic baby eyes. awesome job though! and awesome patience!
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
I drew along with him and the techniques were good. I was a little rusty. People grow into portraits - it is the artist's job to give his or her expression of that person.
You can... but they only come with an HB lead. He's using a 4B lead, which you'll probably have to either special order from Michaels (if they do that) or order online. (I got mine from Dick Blick.)
You try drawing an active baby, teaching a lesson on live TV, and directing a stucio at the same time - in less than ten minutes. You are nuts if you think that I put this here for your critique. It is here to encourage sketching metods, not to denonstrate photo-realistic balogne.
@lonhaverly While I applaud your ability to draw a face in such a short window of time, I must disagree with your views on photorealism, being referred to as "baloney". Photorealistic drawing requires the most intense practice, skill level and observation of close details and replication of scale, placement, and shade of any pencil work. While I can sketch out an accurately imitated face of a model in minutes, drawing that same person with photorealistic quality can take me days. It is hard. :)
Is it better to hold the pencil sort of loose like you have it? Because when I draw I usually hold it tight like when I'm writing something. Or is it different with everyone?
Yes, control is the thing. You must practice your line exercises, and develop an ability to control your strokes. THat way, you will not be making lines that you will want to erase. Each line will be accurate, each line will be expressive.
It is not a matter of just accuracy. It is a matter of expression and art. This is artist centered drawing, not form centered. I care more about the art than stiff accuracy. So I set limits, and that gives it style and jazz, not just rigid accuracy. The line is king, not the form.
'm on social security and I'm 63. I sent Lon $67.00 for videos. He sent wrong order on scratched disc that won't play. He will not refund my order as he said. He will not except emails from me. When last I asked for refund he wrote "Get In Line". He took advantage of me.
i think the eyes need to be slightly closer and the cheeks are puffier..but other then that i think its awesome! i'm going to use a few of your techniques
A five minute pose is not going to be perfect. THat is not the goal. A likeness is more than just being accurate, but being expressive. That is where the line technique comes in. Expressive lines get the job done, not just photo realism.
OMG SO ADORABLE! YOUR AMAZING! My nephew moves alot, but he tends to repeat the same movement yet still hard to draw him (unless his asleep). The baby is so CUTE!
Great video and drawing Lon. I could never have done that in less than 10 minutes. :)

Yeah, can I get a pencil like that at Micheals? The mechanical one with the thick lead. It shades nice.

Can i ask what pencil or drawing material did you use to draw?
leonardyap2 3 years ago
as your draw does it depend how you use the pencil like holding it and pressing light?
