i saw economy piciking on the suggestion box . i realized that i naturally economy pick ,my giutar teacher also said that i dont alternate pick when play with out metrome. before this vid i did know a thing about economy picking . this just made my life esaier now i can dis my guitar teacher about my picking in U R FACE TEACHER
Thanks a million. I always did out side picking, didn't know there was some thing else until recently. You made it pretty clear how to do it. I can see the benafits to knowing this.---thanks again--let the practise begain!
i guess i always naturally always economy picked... because i always thought i alternate picked but one day my jazz teacher said that i didnt alternate picked but i economy picked... but i never studied or even looked up economy picking, until now...
Great lesson I am really trying to get a grip on my technique and I am just learning this one. I am studying music in college and my teacher told me about this technique. Thank you for you insight it has really helped me.
I learned this technique from Frank Gambale's DVD ... been using it ever since ... never could get comfortable with alternate picking ... plus it's a waste of motion ... although you can't economy pick everything sadly enough.
well, I think some popular pentatonic licks are to complicated to reshape for economy picking, but probably the only thing is string skipping, I only use economy picking and I have never had a problem with anything.
patterns that are 2 notes per string are better suited to alternate picking. they can also be played more agressively - listen to some hard bluesy solos.
economy picking suits 3 note per string patters - it helps you build much more control and play really fast, fluid runs up and down the fretboard
I pick just like you brother. Would you believe that economy picking is faster and more efficint than alternate picking? Its also true that it is much easier to downpick after the 3rd note of the string rather than up picking it.
No but you can do a lot of things you can't do with alternate picking or are just easier with economy and vice versa. So it's good to do both but obviously as humans you gotta focus on one if you wanna get really good at it. I focus on economy picking cuz I like the stuff you can do with it. Economy picking is also generally easier and less effort with practice.
iv been guitar for a while and recently discovered that when i go down a scale i was economy picking and when i was coming back i was using alternate lol but i hadnt herd of economy picking i just thought i was doing it wrong even though i was going fast and hitting the notes i still cant pick at the same speed with alternate picking on the way down th scale but i guess ill just practice that lol
Excellent lesson and great example on economy picking, this guy is a good teacher... so many great guitarists out there that can't seem to get there point across or teach worth a darn. Great Vid!!
another technique i found made me just glide up and down the 6 strings was to close my fist when picking. just like gambale. when you adjust to that, man, you wont believe what you can do.
yea iv herd it makes it easier to keep ur hands synced up. i anchor my pinky on the pickgaurd for fast alternate picking but im seriously considering closing my fist.was just wondering how long did it take u to adjust to that style of picking? just iv been palying guitar for about sevn years and changing my picking style now will be a challenge and if it takes along time to adjust i might not bother lol cheers
it took me a month and a half to get the technique right. you will always have the tendency to go back to your old style. what i did was go back to basics for a while. i did 8 notes playing scales scales. then sped it up everyday. next thing i know. wow!!!
kl :) its just not to toot my own horn but i can play fast already but like everybody else i want to play faster! lol im learning technical difficuties and the legato rffs and solo are fine but that bloody opening alternate picking, just cant get it fast enough and when i watched paul gilbert do it he had no fingers of his right hand on the guitar
i guess everyone has their own style. look how odd Michael Angelo Batio's style is. i just dont get it. watch gambale video. entitled Frank Gambale with a "sweeping statement"... look at how easy he makes it look. because it really is easier with his technique.
yea batio style is an extreme version of mine lol its intersting u mentioned him as he is a great picker but looks like he is tryin very hard (although im sure he isnt lol) btw was wondering i anchor my hand in order to control it but in ur picking style do u rest ur hand on the bridge? or sumthin just wondering as im a total noob to this style lol cheers
its actually gonna feel really weird for a while. we don't rest the hand on the bridge. if you were able to watch gambale's video you'll see where his hand was and how effortless the movements are. you save so much energy.
great lessons. economy picking is the best. it takes time to adjust to economy style but when you get it, wow!!!. its ironic actually. you shred faster and more but dont get tired like the normal picking.
Nice vid, it explains it pretty well. I've been working on economy picking for the past 3 days for 3 hours a dayXD I can do it pretty fast I just need to get a lot cleaner. And I always had a problem with string skipping with alternate picking, I find economy picking much more efficient for me.
This is an awesome lesson and a great demonstration of talent. I still struggle greatly getting my picking hand to do what I want, but I still enjoy seeing these techniques. Thank you, good sir.

exact same lick as zakk wylde's shred one except to learn this one you probably don't have to practice as much because of the economy picking
