I think it is because Gvrilov probably, in my humble opinion, never reach where richter is. I am a absolute fan of both, but richter's performance of this ballade is so, as you have said, natural, but at the same time emotional and powerful without being cloy. Gvrilov's performance of this ballade is like a sharp knife stabbing up your heart, strong and sharp, but lacks that little softness, that little sensitivity, that richter has. That is just my opinion

Enigmatic... how could he reach ALL that in music? Why did he manage to sound SO natural, like a force of nature, while being so pedantic in his hard work? Why was he was so much loved by the public, close friends and Nina d'Orliak... and why is he so much hated (basically, that's the word) by some personalities like the (then obviously talented) Gvrilov ?
