Using dirty needles while piercing or tattooing is another way. Also babies who are born to affected mothers have the virus passed on to them. Certain STDs can be contracted by skin to skin contact of the infected area (although HIV isn't one of them). So yes staying absent until marriage does lower your chance, but it doesn't at all prevent it.
