And the reason we wouldn't teach the other opinion is because schools cannot teach hate. You do learn about the different religions in school but they never teach you what one hates about the other. That would just be ridiculous.
The reason for teaching specifically gay history is so young gay people can see the great things homosexual people have done and will allow them to see that they aren't restricted in life just bc they are gay.
Mitchell Gold has provided no logical reasoning nor facts to justify his position. This wasn't a debate, this was one guy who wanted to feel good about himself and wanted to make anyone who is devoted to their religion look like a bully. Being gay has absolutely no influence on ones ambitions.
i agree it isnt necessary to bring up the fact that harvey milk was gay when talking about his contributions to the gay rights movement. just like it is unimportant to say that martin luther king jr. was black when he fought for civil rights. or how unimportant it is to teach that susan b anthony was a woman.
gays should stop paying school taxes.....gay kids shouldn't be afraid of being themselves in public school........and straight people keep having gay children.......the more kids you have the more taxes you should pay.......no school tax for gays.... untill being gay can be an accepted topic in school.....
@imnotsmartbutimtryin Being gay is not like being African American, Hispanic,Asian,Indian or Caucasian its a desire not something we are born with and not a culture there are gays in every country its nothing special its a lustful desire for the same sex nothing else.
@imnotsmartbutimtryin That's because I am not wrong and you know it you call me ignorant but you don't even know me so say what ever makes you feel better about yourself that's what the homosexual community are trying to do force people to accept it as normal because they know that its not.
@jeanniefavela so what you are saying is that you have an equal sexual attraction to both women and men......but you CHOOSE men......and yes the homosexual community is just forcing people to accept them....how messed up is that......how terrible to accept another human being for who they are....people like you are a cancer.......just plain sickening to hear shite from people like your every day.....just drop dead....please....
@imnotsmartbutimtryin Actually I find my same sex more attractive physically but its just perversion to act on the lust of the flesh the more I do the more unhappy I become, the gay community believe if every one accepts their perversion as normal they will finally be happy and satisfied but that just isn't true they will still be unhappy.
@jeanniefavela so your saying your sexually attracted to females? lol....your just another christian...oh so holy....self rightious person........i just wish people would grow up already and stop acting like children.....
@imnotsmartbutimtryin Yep that's what I am saying and if I had ever acted on the attraction I would have feed into that fleshly desire and it would become harder and harder to keep from it its like a drug go ahead and hate me for speaking the truth everyone hated my Lord for the same reason the difference between me and my Lord is He was perfect and never acted on any fleshly or evil desire I am a sinner and in need of a savior and I am not afraid to admit it.
@jeanniefavela I knew you were religious......LOL....you still believe in Santa too..... religion is a cult...nothing more....sick people that can't think out of the box.......eve was made from adams rib...REALLY!!! the Earth is only 6000 years old..a HA HA...i could go on...but i don't have the patience for stupidity..the most evil and hurtful comments on videos like these are made by religious freaks...why don't you go sacrifice a ram...for the lord likes the pleasing aroma of burning flesh
@imnotsmartbutimtryin I think its funny how people say Christians are closed minded when in fact it is everyone else who is close minded to God and what it really means to be a Christian.

@imnotsmartbutimtryin There are people who call themselves Christians and are not and there are plenty of pastors and priests who are not as well Jesus didn't like having the high priests sitting high and pretty acting as though they were some how holier than everyone else when their hearts were full of greed and pride you are right there are Christians who are self righteous or so called Christians.

2nd Century AD: Roman emperor Elagabalus is smitten by a male athlete named Aurelius Zoticus, whom he marries. Lakota chief Crazy Horse had one or two male spouse(s) and many other Native American nations also had same-sex marriages. 17th century Fukian Province China, same-sex marriages between gay men were common. In West Africa, "woman marriage[s]"-a practice by many tribes. 1552 : In the "History of the Indies," Francisco Lopez de Gomara documents men are marrying men in the Indies.
Funny how all the history books skip over Alexander the Great's homosexuality , , , while the evangelical bigots harp about how gays can't be soldiers.
Maybe, if these rightwing Christian bigots knew a little history, they might not make so many ignorant statements.
...so are the Civil Rights Movement, or Women's Rights, innapropriate, since they teach the history of a specific group? It's absolutely inspirational to see someone from history who you can relate to and think, "They're exactly like me, from the same background, up against the same injustices, and look what they accomplished. That could be me."
If you want a true view of history, ALL significant figures should be included, regardless of race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.
We don't live in a heterosexual supremacist society as Mitchell Gold asserts. We live in a predominantly heterosexual society. Big difference. It's just a numbers thing. It doesn't have anything to do with being better than anyone else.
I hate it when people choose words like that to establish their position as the victim. They should just state their case. If their idea has merit, things will change.
@ChipArgyle It's only a difference so long as the non-heterosexual minority isn't subjected to the kind of abuse that they have been for centuries. America is a perfect example of a heterosexual supremacist society because of how loudly and frequently religion, politicians, lobbyists, television presenters and general media that constantly attack and belittle the GLBTQ community. You are only afforded the perks of a victim-free society if you are a 'normal' herterosexual man or woman.
@smedogz The US isn't a very good example of a tolerant, respectful society. Where I live, relatively few people would be considered heterosexual supremacists.
Observation: in the beginning, it was pink. Then it was purple and pink. Then the alternately-sexual took all the colors from the rest of us and now have the rainbow.
Question: first, it was just G&L issues. Then it was GLB. Then it became GLBT for a while. Now a Q has been added. Are they gonna steal the whole alphabet too?
then again we have people like pawlenty who say things like "marriage between a man and a woman should remain elevated: socially, culturally, practically, legally, morally, in our society." (watch?v=rOX7iBQjscI)
of course it has nothing to do with being better than anyone else.
@AceofDiamonds0 The upside is we don't have to listen to people like that, and we don't have to act on their narrow minded beliefs either. If you ever wind up talking to someone like him or Santorum, remind them that Christians who eat bacon are equally as sinful as homosexuals, and they're going to the same place after they die. It's plain as day in Leviticus. Then remind him that Adam and Eve were never formally married, so we're all bastards anyway.
It is absolutely amazing to me that someone can call this "pro-homosexual propaganda" on national television in this country in 2011, and no one calls them out on it. Some people are gay, dude. Deal with it.
The idea shouldn't only be, "This will help gay kids to have a role model to relate to". It should also, and no less importantly, be aimed at highlighting the contributions of LGBT people to Western history (to the world's history, actually), in the same way it's part of California's curriculum today to teach the contributions of Black people and Mexican Americans to the US culture in general, and to that State in particular.
Amazing how bullies always insist that their liberties are being stepped on when somebody tries to stop them from stepping on the liberties of others.
Considering this was Fox, I'm surprised they allowed a rebuttal of the FRC at all. They're terrified of the future because they see it coming and know they're doomed to the "bad old ideas" waste container. Why teach this in school? Same reason we now teach that the earth is round and not 6000 years old. When science and religion go in the same direction, even if mistakenly, that's one thing. When the science changes, the old theories have to stay in church. And unfortunately they do.
@groucho3710 : Fox News seems to have got a weird reputation among people who don't watch it. They routinely have this sort of debate, and both sides get to have their say often to the point of trying to yell over each other. Even on the op-ed shows hosted by conservatives like Mr. O'Reilly, they have plenty of Democratic Party regulars like Ms. Harman and Mr. Bennett in to comment on various things.
@xdashlydia "Yelling over each other" is not a debate; that's a shouting match. That Fox News viewers can't tell the difference is confirmation that Fox is more interested in sensation than in truth. (Not that that makes them any different from CNN or MSNBC . . .)
I love Sprigg's comment that homosexuality wasn't given a name until the 1800s and therefore people before that cannot be called homosexuals. Then that means that it really was NOT mentioned in the Bible by God and it is just man adding it to translations in the last 2 decades. And it is definitely important in our world to identify sexual orientation of historic figures. Kids need people to identify with and to know they can be successful no matter their sexuality.
Why was she giving the prick on the left more time to respond? There are Many Gay heros that need to come to light and that can only be done in a classroom. Not only does it help Gay kids But it helps heterosexual kids as well understand that we've been around a LONG time and we will continue to be here. Once they learn that Gay kids can only be here through Heterosexual realtionships, they will begin to realize WE BELONG HERE!
@beeblmeyer Thanks beeblmeyer.. I was just trying to be sarcastic. Actualy the only time I see anything on Fox is when it's presented in a video such as this one. I'm kinda happy Mitchel got a few good comments in though.
The Right Wing Evangelicals have no issue with rewriting history when it's in their favor, ie Texas school books. They just don't want gay people spoken of because they think we will just all go away if it's not spoken of publicly, ie Tennessee It's Ok to Be Takei LOL
Sprigg is right that "gayness" was only a concept from the late 19th century onward - before then, everyone believed as he does, that everyone is straight, really, and gayness was just sin. Then they medicalised it ("homosexuality" as sickness) until the 1960s and the liberation movements. Doesn't change the fact that Alexander's first love was Hephaestion and Michaelanglo's, Tomasso Cavalieri.
Relevance of Michaelangelo's sexual orientation? "If Midhaelangelo had been straight, the Sistine Chapel ceiling would have been painted basic white, and with a roller."
Way to go Mitchell. This is 21st century and all of those religious bigots need to be placed where they truly belong - THE PAST. Gay history is a must because it's as much a part of humanity history as any other minority group's history. Down with hate.
Wait. So, its not okay for politicians to legislate school curriculum due to not having the expertise, but it IS okay for them to legislate abortion and other medical rights without the expertise? Too bad nobody told them that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
What a sick, hate-filled individual Peter Sprigg is. He's so pitiful and bitter in his opinions. He should pray to Jesus for forgiveness and understanding and compassion. But this is how he makes his living - by spreading fear and hatred.
it's time to get rid of the religious right! Lets get all Republicans out of public office!
since they love kissing corporate butt so much let them stay in the private sector, them learn how to earn their salaries, & pay for their own healthcare, & retirement.
Sprigg is such a little fascist himself. Thanks for taking him down, Mitchell. Sprigg ain't no Christian, anyhow. His theology and faith are about as deep as a soap dish in a cheap hotel. Another right wing loss-leader primed to distract people while the foxes are in the henhouse raiding the coffers.
They need to make children watch documentaries of those who were jailed and sent to the camps in Nazi Germany and study what happens when you let fascists like Mr. Sprigg get into an authority role.
The point of saying that the church has always believed something and so we must also believe it is a very ignorant point. Until the 1970's, the Catholic Church official stance was that gravity did not exist because the Bible says we are held on earth by God's thumb. And we won't even go into how many people were tortured and killed by the church because those people believed the earth was round when the Bible states that it is square, flat, held up by pillars and covered by a bowl.
Peter Sprigg is obviously gay. A closeted gay. He is pretending to be a heterosexual. Which is fine, but it is sick of him to advocate that others pretend to be heterosexual. Especially when he advocates violence and hatred toward others.
I personally don't know how I feel about the curriculum itself, I'm rabidly pro-equal rights though. I would have to think on it longer to come to a conclusion. Having said that, Mitchell was awesome! He refused to be pushed around by the bigot AND he didn't let Ms. Faux News silence him either. Good for him.
@Thornewolf I've reviewed some of the text on the bill and both of them, in a way, had it wrong. I foresee this being implemented in a way that is much more inclusive, adding LGBT history to history curriculum across the board. Today, the presentation of LGBT history in schools is practically non-existent. That does a disservice to all students, not just LGBT ones.
History studies ought to be focused on the facts of what happened, who they happened to, who made them happen and why they happened. You can't really understand the contributions of a John Adams unless you also understand his interactions with his wife, Abigail. When you discover that John Hancock was gay (see "The First American Republic" by Tom Chorlton), it gives us new insight into his life during the revolution. Sprigg wants to rewrite history; gays just want to tell the full story.
Thank you Mitchell! Peter just doesn't get it. It's impossible have a logical discussion, when they've got their list of bullet points to get through instead of answering a direct question.
Mitchell, you need to be out there. your calm voice and intelligent thoughts need to be heard!
when you hear from all sides that "homosexuals are an abombination", when kids know who was gay in history, can point and say, "Was Michaelangelo an abomination?"
And the reason we wouldn't teach the other opinion is because schools cannot teach hate. You do learn about the different religions in school but they never teach you what one hates about the other. That would just be ridiculous.

That is an awesome, and too true, quote!
Thank you, Hugh!

Way to go Mitchell. This is 21st century and all of those religious bigots need to be placed where they truly belong - THE PAST. Gay history is a must because it's as much a part of humanity history as any other minority group's history. Down with hate.

I will pay five thousand dollars for one minute alone with this Peter Sprigg person.

@silvanusslaughter Amen to that. He looks like he's been weaned on a pickle.

They need to make children watch documentaries of those who were jailed and sent to the camps in Nazi Germany and study what happens when you let fascists like Mr. Sprigg get into an authority role.

Fair and balanced, my ass. Proud of you, Mitchell Gold!

Sprigg....not so much.

Peter Sprigg is obviously gay. A closeted gay. He is pretending to be a heterosexual. Which is fine, but it is sick of him to advocate that others pretend to be heterosexual. Especially when he advocates violence and hatred toward others.

Peter Sprigg could use some education in reality, what a sick individual.
