I just pre ordered snow leopard and im looking at a bunch of videos to really look at what i bought lol, your video did the best justice. i would just like to know is it worth it to upgrade it to SL because i saw on cnet that times for apps are slower? im kinda confused.
snow leopard and 7 both impress the hell out of me. I am glad that they decided to improve the things that matter in these os instead of trying to just throw pointless toys at you.
i will use and buy both (i have allready preordered snow leopard) and install both on all my machines
I had oportunity to use Snow Leopard and Window 7 retail install into Mac mini 2009 model. Supprisingly, both OS felt very similar and very simple and fast respond. Snow Leopard do boot up faster + sleep + awake about 10 second faster than window 7. Window 7 does improve on all those quality but not as fast a Snow leopard.
First i have to say that i'm biased towards OS X. I think it's the best OS ever, far from any other.
I was going to say something, then when i finished watching the video i changed my mind. I think this is the way Apple manages challenges compared to MS.
Apple thinks ahead and thinks in the final user and the developer. They think of doing things simpler, rather than patching and patching and patching, like MS does.
I don't know if it's b/c of my bias, but I find everything very tidy and organized in OS X, even when I program. Xcode is the best! And with GCD it will be tidy to program with threads (i have a little bit of experience using OpenMP on linux) and hence more efficient. Even if it's not efficient at the beggining it will be easier to fix since it's all centralized in GCD.
When I knew about the new features on Snow Leopard, i was very happy I switched to apple.
Microsoft has had multi core management for quite some time. Microsoft is patching all of their operating systems so developers can take advantage of multicore technologies on all OSs.
Outstanding video mate, I normally have problems following some of your more technical videos, HOWEVER that is due to my lack of intelligence and nothing to do with your videos. In this video I totally followed everything you mentioned and in fact enlightened me regarding Grand Central and Opencl. All the best mate and take care
dude, r u a programmer? That's a little more than id ever care to know. I think it's pretty awsome that u know that stuff and can make vids like this. gratz on the video! 5star
Mr Bit, you look so much better clean shaven, just so you know. I bet your waifu agrees with me. Even though it's completely, completely irrelevant to this entire video.
lol, my wife is the reason i have it. I used to have one years ago and hated it as it itched a lot but she asked for it again, and so i grew it out and will see how long it lasts. :)
There are not much of an upgrade for the end users, since all these technologies are mainly for developers. Even OpenCL sounds good but if no app make use of it hmmm I think most people won't see the different between leopard and snow. I wonder if all the Intel mac does support OpenCL?
I remember reading somewhere about 20% faster video encoding under Snow Leopard. I think it was somewhere on Mac Rumors, but I can't seem to locate the thread right now. If I remember correctly they were saying that OpenCL may have been the cause of the increase.
I just wanted to give a shout out to you, mrbit10. Your videos are always very insightful and you're very aware of how tech works. This video was the reason I subscribed to you. I was going to make a similar video just to put to rest the misconceptions of how opencl and grand central work. Thanks and keep the videos coming! :)
have you tried snow leopard yet? doesnt sound like you have because I have and it's BLAZING fast. the native apps all use GCD and the code is streamed lined. I don't care what MS does, it's slower than leopard and thats a fact....lol
as long as you use "good" apps it is rare to screw up the registry. - ASCII808
This is true especially well known apps. A bad install or uninstall are the common causes of registry errors. It is far less common no to have these errors than when using Win 95, 98, or Me.
Windows has had the System Restore feature as a safety net since Me - in case an install goes haywire and screws up your registry, you simply roll back.
Yeah, I know and Win Me really needed that System restore. I used to turn off System Restore, but I stopped doing it and instead just lowered it to 3%. System Restore has saved me a lot of headaches so I keep it on as a backup measure. Well not that I constantly screw up my computer, it's just good to have. Surprisingly not many people know about System Restore or forget about it.
yes it may be the case, developers do what the deem is the correct path which may be influenced by price, time and etc. I hope not because the features beyond 64bit would not get used.
Most of the binaries INCLUDED with Windows x64 editions are 64-bit. Things such as Internet Explorer include 32-bit binaries for the sake of compatibility with 32-bit plugins.
A lot of applications are being distributed with 64-bit binaries, but for many developers, the burden of compiling, debugging, and testing 64-bit binaries on top of their 32-bit binaries is too much work.
to me, if wat u said holds, sounds like a big misconception, about grand central...but then why would betrand salet (i know spelt wrong) say that grand central offers more system resources when an applicatino is idle, is he just saying that for developers to develop apps to take advantage of grand central dispatch, and that apple have NOT made apps to take advantage of that, e.g. mail which was also the example used at wwdc with regards to more system resources when an app is idle ? lol
Grand Central specifically is a programmatic way of taking locks and thread management off of the app and giving it to the OS. It is separate specifically from multiprocessing improvements. In other words, Apple made improvements and Grand Central takes advantage of them, BUT apps cannot use GC unless written to do so.
well, do not think of grand central as the improvement in mutlicores it is designed to take the burden off of the app and give it to the OS via programming. The apps you mention are multithreaded but will only take advantage of any improvements made in multiprocessing. To use grand central, they must be written to do so.
You make Grand Central sound like a service or AI director imbedded into Snow Leopard. I always had the impression that Grand Central was a tool set or set of API's to assist developers with their multi-core programming. Really, what is Grand Central?
Also, I had a chance to play with Snow Leopard in it's earlier builds, and it increased my multi-core benchmarks by ~15% without any special programing. I like the no-hassle improvements!
I can't see that for a small while. The most I can see having quads would be the iMac (not including the Mac Pro here). iMacs use mobile CPU's, so unless they're happy to increase power use and so on then Quads may be a while away. At least until the Nahalem based i7 Mobile CPU's coming at the end of the year, which apparently come in Quad models. Time will tell!
The one thing I would like to see is a built in registry cleaner for Win 7 and it would save the registry entry of the file that will be uninstalled. I know there is already software out there that does it, but I'd like to have it built in. Perhaps MS can't because of EU and anti-trust getting on their case.
If your looking for a subject for a video. I may have one, "The Windows Registry" what's the pro's and con's of it. People constantly point out that it's a bad thing and causes problems, yet I haven't seen a problem with it since Win 98.
its not the registry itself, its the applications that screw up the registry. the people that have registry problems use bad shareware or bad software in general. I think Windows should have a built in registry cleaner to make sure it does not get bloated/fragmented. usually the apps the make your computer slow down are applications that require tons of registry access like business programs like quicken, etc. its very rare for the registry to screw up on its on.
as long as you use "good" apps it is rare to screw up the registry. don't tell me that Macs can not slow down overtime. haha yeah that is right you blocked me because of that lol.

it is pretty cheap to get the SL, so why you worry? 30$ for the older versions 10$ for leopard, it is almost a give away.

Why does 64 bit Windows based operating systems still have so many 32 bit applications, when they've been using 64 bit operating systems for years?
Do you think Mac will also be similar in this aspect, because most my applications in windows I see are installed to the program files (x86) folder.
Is it harder to integrate 64 bit coding into applications?
