Well buxom like voluptuous I believe is commonly misused (ie: queen Latifa is not voluptuous to me). I wouldn't say that is a synonym for fat. It is hard to find a way to say heavy-set when trying to be considerate, but the most accurate and least offensive and misleading to me is voluminous. Back to my example I would describe Queen Latifa as voluminous, because to me a buxom or voluptuous woman has more bosom and derriere than breadbasket.
