Is it really gasoline? Or is the news making stuff up? I dare say that with this being a "regular" exercise, that they would of had this problem before, or run across somebody who realized what they were doing. There might be the possibly that with the added fuel in a relatively oxygen depleted atmosphere (like the "v" berth on a boat where it was being thrown) the conditions fit for a backdraft or flashover once that little heat stick thing he had, was applied.

Also, there are parts in any boat that could be oxygen depleted, the space between the floor and the ribs comes to mind. I don't know, thankfully none of us were there in the blast!

@poiuyt3251 Well the boat is open and the flames clearly have access to air. This would not produce a backdraft situation at all. Flashover, however is possible and probably closer to what they were trying to achieve (like a flashover room on water). We train for the worst and since he lived, this is actually a good thing. Better have it happen here than on a call. Personally, when I train, I want it to be the worst conditions as possible...you know, without getting severely injured.

I hope that this deptartment now lights the training fire from another boat and has a crew ready befor lighting it up. That was a foolish way to set a training fire. Next time throw a lit flare at the boat to be set on fire. BE SAFE!! If you get hurt who will help the persons who needed help first? posibly no one.

I hope they wrote a new directive on how to conduct this exercise in the future. Nobody should be on the boat when gasoline is ignited. Throw a torch from another boat.

If the idea is to remove someone from an already burning boat, use a dummy or use a non-exploding fuel like kerosene.

And get the empty can off the boat before lighting it.

No, I wouldn't want someone like this to respond to my house if it were on fire. Most people KNOW you can't use gasoline to start fires when this close. If gas were to be used they should have ignited it remotely or by some other method where they didn't have to be IN the boat.

I can't believe that someone actually said that the turnout gear is pretty buoyant and that he had a full tank of air. Seriously, that is so wrong it's not even worth explaining why other than it is about as buoyant as the Titanic and the SCBA does not work under or in water. Not to mention once the shoes fill up with water, it may as well be concrete as the person sinks to the bottom. Never wear turnout gear in water.

it was The Gas fumes. if you watch carefully you can see the flame spread through the fumes.  I'm guessing where the boat had a enclosed top the fumes built up in there and that was the reaction sucks but at least he's ok.

That definitely wasn't a good move on his part, but he's not just wearing the "costume", he's actually trained as a firefighter.

Just to let you know, lifeguards here in LA are part of the Los Angeles County Fire Dept., and are trained in lifeguarding, swift-water rescue, and most are also firefighters as well.

The lifeguarding field is becoming really advanced, with personnel trained in all kinds of things as well as professional open-water lifeguarding, such as SCUBA, para-medicine, swift-water and cliff rescues, rescue swimming, helicopter operations, and as afore-mentioned, firefighting.
