before i answer i would liketo tell you that i'm an atheist.
i would not open the box, i know that it seems a strange answer. But i think that finding the answers to life is a big part of actually living your life.
Not all Christians disagree with evolution. There is actually a branch of Christianity, as well as several isolated believers within other denominations, who see evolution AND Christianity as being true. In other words, they don't see them as being mutually exclusive. In that case, the "Christian" box, wouldn't do much of anything.
I'd open it, why would I want to live in delusion? Though, how would I know that the other persons assertion is correct? Does he have the science to back it up? In any case I'd open it and adjust from there.
I would open the box, take out the time machine, sell it, and probably use the box for something else. Searching for the truth is a lot more fun than finding it.
That's the coolist thing I've ever heard someone say in regards to the truth. I believe you; it's just like the idea that it's not the destination that matters, but the journey!
I would not only open that box, I would inspect every square millimeter of that box with an atomic microscope just to make sure I didn't miss anything.
but we have multiple beliefs, the box could disprove your belief that God exists or your belief that man landed on the moon!(simmer down its just an example) anyway yes i would open the box, "the truth with set you free" -the bible.
I would open it, because I'd get to meet god. But I'm wondering how would the box know what I believed? And how/why would reality conform to the antithesis of my beliefs just so the box would be able to prove me wrong? I'm just playing devil's advocate here...
Maybe just before everyone recieves the box, without realizing it, they accidentally step across a portal that brings them to a paralel universe. (There, that should sort out the contradictions)
Oh yes! Please give me the box, please! I would be scared but hey, I could open it, answer some of the questions, then I would enjoy life thinking of other things, question something else, then I would open the box again etc. As long as I have fun.
Being a scientist in my mindset, if there was a box that proved I was wrong, I would be compelled to open it and correct my mistakes. It doesn't mean I'd worship a god however, I don't bow to more powerful or advanced creatures out of fear.
The contents of the box you wrote for scientologists was was the equivilent of you writing that for atheists/christians the contents are something that "shows you how the world ACTUALLY was created." You gave enough respect to christians to point out specifically disproving their beliefs, rather then simply saying "It shows you what REALLY happened." I ask that you show equal respect for other belief systems. Please clarify the contents of the box shows, not "You're wrong, we're right".
Sorry, I want to edit my post. The original post was longer then 500 characters so I had to delete parts of it (resulting in two "was"s" The word "something" should be between "point out" and "specifically disproving", obviously and the last line was originally "please clarify what the contents of the box shows . . . "
Well, respect *relatively*. Saying "a time machine that shows you evolution in process" is more respectful then what you could've said: "something that shows you how the world REALLY was created." It was not a vague criticism, and was not written as "Well, OBVIOUSLY, you're wrong!". You know what i'm trying to say?
das Bewusstsein ist in der Box! Es widerlegt jeden Glauben und widerspricht jeglicher Logik, weil es ALLES bewirken kann und es war auch das Einzige, das jemals fähig dazu war...
If a od does pop out of the box, i would have to ask it every single question i possibly could, followed by demands of proof, then an eternity of my opinion about said god(s). Hopefully after all this it would give and i could rule...
Fair enough. Skepticism is good (Skepticism is what the question was all about actually) but the box just disproves YOUR beliefs. If an Atheist opens it, God's in there. If a Creationist opens it, it's a time machine. Etc.
If the box gave solid evidence to suggest there was a god. Then yes, I'd become a theist. But does this box tell you which religion is the right one (if there is a right one)? Otherwise I'd become a deist.
To be perfectly honest I'd be so impressed by the idea of a God-in-the-Box that I'd open it striaght away and start anoying which ever God popped out (preferably one of the cool ones, like the Horned God or Anubis) by asking a rediculous amount of questions about how everything was made and works.
That's my plan on judgement day. If there is a god who'll send me to hell for not believeing in him, while I'm there I'm gonna say "Wait a minute, wait a minute, what's all this aboutT rial Wives and stuff?"
Open it in a heartbeat. Not only would I know the truth and origins of the universe, there would also be a heaven. People talk about science as though it's a religion, it's not, it is simply a pursuit of the truth; fitting our beliefs to our knowledge of the world...religion consists of fitting our knowledge of the world to our beliefs...therein lies the difference.
I'd go ahead and open it. I'm an atheist but if I ever come in contact with strong evidence going into another direction (let's say evidence of jesus Christ, Zeus or w/e) I'll be ready to accept it.. I'm not saying that my way of living is the right one, I'm simply saying that I have no idea of who is right or wrong and so I live my life as best as I can without following any specific belief systen.
i am an armchair scientist/philosipher myself, and an outspoken atheist. man, if i had that box i would lunge for it. i mean i'd be scared to open it, and it would most likely be a difficult paradigm shift, but i'd do it, not questions asked. there are very few things in the world that i want more than answers, escpecially when this answers could herald in the maturation of humanity.
also, i'd like to add that if the devine being that i found in there was either yahovah, yaveh, or allah i'm not entirely sure whether i could handle living knowing who's in charge, and i may go so far as to deny his existance simply to keep myself and the people around me sane.
When I made this video I tried to think of what might be in the box if an agnostic opened it. Had trouble thinking of something. The best I could come up with is "If you're an agnostic, uh... I dunno, maybe you have some political beliefs that can be disproven?"
Although actually in a way if you're agnostic then you've already opened the box, it's wide open.
As a philosopher I would have little choice but to pursue truth and open the box. However, this hypothetical question a little vague. I appreciate the examples but lets add another layer. Lets suppose I am a perfect being that isnt wrong about anything. Then what could the box possibly contain? According to the law of non-contradiction, I cant be both right and wrong about the same thing at the same time in the same manner. hhmmm....
Well, I suppose, if you were a perfect being who knew everything, then YOU would be the one to jump out of the box and say "Hi, how you doing?" when an Atheist opened it.
That is some of the worst philosophy I have ever heard. Let's add another layer to that. Let's suppose that as the perfect being, all I perceive is true. Let's also suppose that in this box the contents show the exact opposite of truth, but is always completely convincing. What would I see? According to the law of common sense, this is just me making up an impossibility and has no relevence to anything.
You might say that same argument applies to the hypothetical question in the first place. Obviously u didnt read the question i asked, what could the box POSSIBLY contain. Can you think of something that is both up and down. Here is a hint, HERACLITUS DID! Don't talk of philosophy. You sound like an idiot when you do. Dechha postulated that to be such a being would entail being god. At least he ventured a guess. Go hang yourself Carb.
Haha! Well, as a philosopher, Justsumdude, you would have to pose questions already asked by others in a forum that has nothing to do with your point. The impressive elements of philosophy are the manner in which they arrive at either the question or answer..not in the stealing of others questions. Don't pretend you know anything about my intelligence, it makes you sound like an idiot...you know I'm cleverer than you. x
Um, JustSumdude01, Carb86, would you two mind taking your flame war elsewhere please?
I'll settle your arguement right now;
The box tells the Truth. The box is right, you're wrong. The box does not change Reality, it only changes your knowledge of Reality. The whole point of the question is open-mindedness and willingness to seek the truthy. There.
I do understand the question. You decided to make a video to see whether atheists or religious people are more willing to alter their world view, believing atheists to be more likely; their views being based on the dynamics of science rather than the immovable dogma of religion.
Actually I dont know of another philosopher that asked "If there is a box etc etc and I am a perfect being etc etc". If you know his/her name by all means speak it Zorothustra. I am glad philosophy impresses you but I dont see how you can say the impressive part of philosophy is logic ( since it is logic that guides us to our answers but I dont think it guides us to questions so much as we ask new questions based on the answers we get). Is logic that amazing to you?
Ok well, if the point is just non contradiction then I guess everything aristotle said and the logic he formed which is still used today is totally unoriginal if your argument holds since he wasnt the first one to think of non contradiction. Go ahead and say that to the APA, they will laugh at you. Semantics matter.
Also, please post anywhere in any platonic dialogue where logic leads them to a question and not an answer which prompts further questioning.
Jesus christ. this is like banging my head against a brick wall..or talking to a particularly pigheaded chav...IT IS NOT THE QUESTION THAT IS IMPORTANT!!! Did you get that? IT IS THE LOGIC BEHIND THE QUESTION AND THE ANSWER HE CAME UP WITH THAT IS!! Many philosophers (actual philosophers) answer the same question but apply their own seperate logic to come up with their own answers. YOU DID NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION!! YOU APPLIED NO LOGIC!! Am I getting through to you?
Um, JustSumdude01, Carb86, would you two mind taking your flame war elsewhere please?
I'll settle your arguement right now;
The box tells the Truth. The box is right, you're wrong. The box does not change Reality, it only changes your knowledge of Reality. The whole point of the question is open-mindedness and willingness to seek the truthy. There.
PS Dechha did not postulate that to be the contradiction would entail being god, he claimed that you yourself as the perfect being would be god. what would you think? Hit me with something deep.
I said nothing of contradiction except the law of non contradiction. what is this "to be the contradiction would entail being god". Scroll up and post where that gets said. I quote myself "Dechha postulated that to be such a being would entail being god". From your inability to understand the question, I believe that makes me more clever than you. How immature you must be to start a flame war over me asking one paradoxical question.
The whole point of this excercise which you claim is "off topic" is actually "on topic". My point is, and as dechha has pointed out because of this dialogue, that you (opening the box) are wrong (about something) in this example. I simply questioned the premise that I HAVE to be wrong hoping to get some kind of epistemic justification, not to provoke a flame war. But you saw to that didnt you carb? good job.
I...can't understand how you can so totally misinterpret the point of the video...even when Dechha made it blindingly obvious you still don't get it.
"You are wrong (about something)"?! That is not the point, not even in the least. The something that you are wrong about is the entire point. It's about your world view and how willing you would be to change it should you be proved wrong...the worst part is you try and sound intelligent. kisses.
*sigh* the excercise I am referring to is MY excercise (why do I have to be wrong about something). Dechha agreed with me. "the box is right, your'e wrong" so this "wrong" suppososition is integral to the hypothetical question. the question simply doesnt work without it. Its amazing how you missed that when dechha clearly spelled it out for you.
Fucking hell. You are so fucking stupid. How the fuck can you completely miss it??!! Dechha was not agreeing with you, you fucking retard, the being wrong about the box is merely a means of arriving at the hypothetical end of the question, which is HOW WILLING ARE YOU TO CHANGE YOUR WORLD VIEW??!! Fuck me, you are so thick skulled.
But this flame is so beautiful, you are my eternal flame.
"I said nothing of contradiction except the law of non-contradiction"...and that would have to do with...contradiction yes.
"Dechha postulated that to be such a thing would entail being god"...to what thing? If you read through your own paragraph you will see that the subject is the thing that is both up and down...and that is...yes it's the contradiction. Surely as a philosopher you above all should realise the importance of syntax.
I repeat AGAIN since twice didnt get through to you. Dechha postulated that to be such a BEING would entail being god. what being are we referring to? it doesnt take an english major to realize we are talking about the hypothetical "perfect being" in my case. You should really look at who needs to brush up on syntax genius.
to quote dechha "Well, I suppose, if you were a perfect being who knew everything..."
Seriously, how can you be this stupid? Now you are lying and making things up to try and make me look foolish. Anyone can clearly see that you could not be more wrong here. Christ its written in plain friggin english. Please tell me that english is your second language or you ate paint chips as a child.
Tell you what, reply if you want but I can't be fucked to speak to you anymore..you remind me of talkin to an evangelical christian, you can give them undeniable logic but they simply refuse to accept it...however I think you are just an idiot. There's no point me even bothering to reply to your retarded answers.
You have only just 4 days ago given me the logic of your argument so that it can clearly be refuted. Dont be so quick to pat yourself on the back. Now we know that you misread what I posted and I have clarified for you though I doubt it confused anyone else. You clearly think too highly of yourself. Next time why dont you START by giving me "undeniable logic" and post your claim with its premises. A claim by itself is not undeniable unless it is a tautology.
That's it, I WARNED you. Carb86, I'm sorry I apologise, I didn't want to do this, but I'm gonna have to block you for a while. I WILL unblock you eventually (unless I forget) If you wish to contunue your arguements just PM eachother or make your oun video to debate eachother on.
Tell me if I am right. You think I was saying that I am a contradiction in this sentence i posted "I cant be both right and wrong about the same thing at the same time in the same manner". This all would have been cleared up if you posted where it got said like i asked. That statement does not mean that I am a contradiction, only that I cannot hold contradictory beliefs. If this is what caused the mix up, then I rest my case that you are an idiot.
"Can you think of something that is both up and down. Here is a hint, HERACLITUS DID! Don't talk of philosophy. You sound like an idiot when you do. Dechha postulated that to be such a being would entail being god."
If you did not mean to say that the something that is both up and down is the being that entails being god, then you are simply not very good at English. I rest my case that you are an idiot.
"Can you...down" is another way of saying "can you think of or comprehend a paradox". "to be such a being" is a way of referring to a prior topic. I could have also said "the afore mentioned being" or "the being stipulated above" or even "the originally discussed being" . All of these are logically equivalent and all serve the purpose of reminding the reader of the previous discussion.
There is absolutely no evidence in these statements that yields "the something that is both up and down is the being that entails being god". This cannot be made any clearer. You have made some logical jump somehow and arrived at conclusion that does not follow.
The two statements each have a clearly different subject and do not refer to eachother.
Perhaps adding the words "At least" before the word "Dechha" would clear up your confusion. This would alter the meaning to imply that Dechha understood the question and tried to rationalize it (as opposed to simply using Dechha as an example of how one might resolve the paradox) where as you clearly did not understand nor try to rationalize it.
Regardless, if you had clearly stated what you thought was wrong and cited the source in quotations IN THE FIST PLACE instead of starting this flame war and going on an ignorant attack I could have explained it all to you over a week ago. So let this be a lesson to you. Post your premises WITH your conclusion otherwise others have to guess at how you came up with your claim.
I did try to rationalise it, and my conclusion was the only part that I found impressive of anything you have written. If you are the perfect being that cannot be wrong, and the box also never wrong, then whatever was in the box would be an impossibility, or contradiction.
(continued from previous reply, probably below) Therefore if you yourself were to be in the box, you would be that contradiction. The paradox is that you cannot be an impossibility, unless (and this was the part I found impressive) you were everything, you were up and down, truth and untruth, every possible answer; the only metaphysical being that would encapsulate this would be God, and in so being the question is answered. Let me know if you disagree.
PS, I am in my final year studying biomedical science, currently at a 1st level (equivalent of A); I will also be going to med-school next year. I've never had an IQ test (to be honest I don't think they give a fair picture of overall intelligence), but my mum has an IQ in excess of 160 (as in the scale was not high enough), so genetically speaking I'm probably not gonna be an intellectual slouch. Have a little think about what that may mean.
So you are on your way to med school? thats great! Im on my way to law school. But the last time I checked IQ isnt a genetic trait. Also, your grades arent a necessary or sufficient condition for high intelligence. Some earn high marks with only slightly above average IQ's through hard work. Others are brilliant but never cared much for school (think Ben Franklin). I am sure you think you made a convincing argument of some kind but I think everything you just wrote here amounts to Jack.
When I told a girl on my course she slapped me in the face because I didn't do anything towards it. The first time I said I was cleverer than you was just a joke, however after your constant display of stupidity I thought I'd put that last bit in to illustrate my point and let you think. You saying that IQ is not a genetic trait is evidence of your ignorance..check things out before you post them.
Guys, I TOLD you, I don't want to block either of you, but if I HAVE to block you to stop you from argueing on my video I will. I'm thinking about blocking you both temporarily. Don't make me do it.
Guys, I TOLD you, I don't want to block either of you, but if I HAVE to block you to stop you from argueing on my video I will. I'm thinking about blocking you both temporarily. Don't make me do it.
What would be the point of opening the box when it will disprove what ever you believe? What if you believe in something that's true? Does that mean the box has no purpose at all? I'd open it though. Even if it does disprove everything I believe, I'll still believe in it. Hmmm...
Luckly for me, I am a spiritualist. I'd glady open the box as nothing in it would contradict what I believe. Its complicated but suffice to say my beliefs are ever changing and whatever I found in the box would have an effect for sure, however I would adapt the knowledge I gained from the box to my beliefs.
I am a scientist. I would highly question the box. But ok, if the box is real and thats just the way it is I would rip it open like a madman on crack. Seriously, the box would make my life. And then I would try to rearrange my world view according to the new paradigm the box gives me.
Sure I'd open it. I'm all about the relentless persuit of truth. If a god pops out, I guess I was wrong. If it's the Abrahamic God, though, I still will probably not serve him, for I'd rather suffer for challenging a master of cruelty than sell my soul to him.
Anyway, the box, like many Christians, have spok Regarding the one you proposed to the hypothetical box question. Nice input with the Scientology thing too! Got a kick out of that. Anyway, the box, like many Christians, have spoken with the man, been blessed by the man and had my entire life be based around him. Again, I have spoken with him, nobody is going to shake me on this one. (more) (less)
if you opened the box and found absolute proof you would still deny the truth and still believe in a god that you now know not to exist? is that not the definition of delusion? would you continue to believe in the face of truth or would you just deny evidence/truth/proof in favour of faith?
I believe that I would open the box because I would be confident that there could be nothing inside which could disprove God. If the contents did seem to disprove God I should imagine that my initial response would be denial, then ponder on the subject profusely until I reached a conclusion. I have been confronted with this situation numerous times but have yet found anything which would make me reject my Lord or the love of Christ who shed his blood for me.
being on the side of science i would definitely open the box as the truth is the most important thing to have. if i found that i was wrong, then i was wrong - i have the proof in front of me and i would know for a fact.
I would open and accept it. I have nothing to fear from the truth. Obviously I would want to check the evidence first. It's my nature to never take anyones word as fact on such important issues. If it stands to my scrutiny then I would be happy.
I dont have a problem with evolution and believing in science. So I would totally open the box...microwave some popcorn and enjoy the ride to the past. :)
Why *wouldn't* anyone want to know the truth? The question you *really* want to ask is: If you were wrong would you accept it? It's insulting to insinuate that people aren't willing to be wrong.
Also: You're assuming that there's no way to know the truth already. There's no proof to say you couldn't already know what's in the box.
Without reserve, what's in that box is what I've been seeking all my life: Truth. It shows a person's honesty in their quest if they show any hesitation.
I would want to know. The box would clarify a great deal: it would indicate beliefs I held but wasn't aware of, ideas I held to be unquestionable, all that above and beyond the specific disproof. A box that disproves everything I believe would be the single greatest tool for self-discovery I can imagine.
The Box will not alter reality. Reality remains the same, only your knowledge of reality will change. The Box is yours to do with as you please. If you're a Creationist, you can also use the Time Machine to meet Benjamin Franklin or cheat in the lottery or whatever. If you have any beliefs other than those listed, whatever would disprove your belief is what's in the box. Use your imagination.
Actually, I offered 3 examples and then said "and so on". Anything else that could possibly disprove anyone's beliefs are covered by "and so on". But, good answer.
not opening the box would be like writing the final exam and never knowing whether you passed or failed. (even though the box itself implies i certainly failed)
I'm an atheist, and I would open it without a second thought. The fact that I'm an atheist is not the singular defining fact of my life, and I would not hesitate to find out which aspect of my life I am wrong about, be it my disbelief in the "supernatural" or my morals and values, or even my life goals. I could not live knowing that I was 100% wrong about aome portion of my life.
Seeing evolution unfold would not disprove God, only creationist theories, whereas seeing God would prove deity. I would open the box because truth is truth. I am a Christian Universalist.
Actually if this is some sort of socialogical test, I suggest you to post in other plaes as well and make some sort of a poll: I'm a christian and i won't open it. I'm a Christian and i will open. I'm an atheist and will open. I'm a Muslim and i will open e.t.c. Maybe add some more options to suite all people :) Interesting question, please let me know how it go's :P
I would open it happily ofcourse! As a scientist I'm searching for the turth. Real truth, not desireble truth, not made up bullshit :P My position is probably: there is no evidence in existance of God, so i suppose that box would have to contain evidence that there is a God. Well if there is such evidence I would sure like to see it!
Great question! At first, I was going to say .. "open it," on the FAITH, that my faith is correct. But, on second thought, I have to consider the ramifications of having my "world" shattered. This is truly Pandora's box.
I really want to say I'm open-minded enough to open the box. However, I have to truthfully say that I would smash it and continue in the comforts that my beliefs offer me.
Wait .. if I may rethink again ... I would not smash the box. It would be wrong to destroy something like that, so if the option exists, I would give the box away ... but I would never want to know its contents, for the reasons I gave, above.
The box, obviously contains "the facts" and, while I have a great respect for facts, I don't need them in my life. My faith is much more satisfying.
The video contains the words "Or what", therefore anything you can possibly think of would be in the "or what" catagory. Also, if you are not a Christian, Atheist or Scientologist, all other possibilities of what could be in the box are covered by "And so on".
The box mightshow me that mathematics are merely a human construct and not germane to explaining the universe, or something equally as devastating to my mind. I am really not prepared to find out that Einstein and Hawking are nothing more than cranks with a lot of mathematical magic to describe the indescribable.
That's it, I really don't want to find out that the universe is, somehow, undefinable. That's my greatest existential horror.
OK, probably about time I arbitrarially picked a date.
Regardless of how many answers I get, I will anounce the entire point of this video on the 1 at of september 2007.On each ans every comment I wilol put a comment that says "results are in scroll down". The point of this video will be written in the comments section, as well as the conclusion I will have drawn.
J'essaye de le garder tranquillité, mais oui, réellement j'essaye d'examiner cette théorie. L'enfer, peut-être chacun me prouvera mal. Pas jusqu'ici, cependant.
This is taking longer than I thought. As of this typing I've got 129 views, but I've only got 11 answers and only 3 of them are from non Atheists. Come on people! I really want to know what you all think!
i would like to say that evolution is observable now!
You mean Abiogenesis which is not related in evolution in any way.
Secondly, i would definetly look into the box. If the box shows christianity is true, i would most certainly try to do something radical like telling god how bad he is.
There's a Christian who sent me an answer by PM. It's possible he doesn't want his name shown, so I'll respect that. Anway, here's what he said;
"Such a box would make one wrong about everything, undoing the laws of physics, logic, math, gravity, thermodynamics, etc, thus destroying reality itself."
I would open it and it won't surprise me if I see evolution occurring because there is another name for Allah, we Muslims also call him AL-BARI (The Evolver)
i'm an atheist, and i'd happily open it! so that when god popped out, and said "how you doing?" i could punch him in the jaw for being a murderous ass hole. that is, if anything actually came out.
yippie, more trick questions. well, let's see... "last samurai"- the samurai king? then there's "iron monkey"- the donnie yen guy, then i'd probably say "kill bill" vol.1- oren ishi-ee [spelling?]. now what?
If you want to ask your oun hypothetical questions, fine, but either do it on your oun video or answer MY question first. You don't get to ask other people questions unless you have the balls to answer my question first.
I would open it, find out the truth and adjust to the truth.
End.

no one should have that power.

Well, I'm an agnostic, meaning I'm not sure what's out there. So what would come out of the box in my case?

the box will only show lies to the one that open it. there for its pointless to open becuse it has no meaning

I would open it. Definitely, I don't care half about being right than about the truth.

An afterthought: Wouldn't opening the box be inconsequential? Wouldn't the existence of said box would proof me wrong in itself?
crazypants88 4 years ago
The existance of the box itself would certainly indecate as such.
dechha1981 4 years ago
but we have multiple beliefs, the box could disprove your belief that God exists or your belief that man landed on the moon!(simmer down its just an example) anyway yes i would open the box, "the truth with set you free" -the bible.

so according to this hypothetical box, EVERYONE is wrong?
ATL45 4 years ago
Well the point is more, "Are you willing to look at evidence that you may be wrong?"
dechha1981 4 years ago
ok, then yes.
ATL45 4 years ago
Being a scientist in my mindset, if there was a box that proved I was wrong, I would be compelled to open it and correct my mistakes. It doesn't mean I'd worship a god however, I don't bow to more powerful or advanced creatures out of fear.

Good answer
dechha1981 4 years ago
The contents of the box you wrote for scientologists was was the equivilent of you writing that for atheists/christians the contents are something that "shows you how the world ACTUALLY was created." You gave enough respect to christians to point out specifically disproving their beliefs, rather then simply saying "It shows you what REALLY happened." I ask that you show equal respect for other belief systems. Please clarify the contents of the box shows, not "You're wrong, we're right".
technologysucks 4 years ago
Sorry, I want to edit my post. The original post was longer then 500 characters so I had to delete parts of it (resulting in two "was"s" The word "something" should be between "point out" and "specifically disproving", obviously and the last line was originally "please clarify what the contents of the box shows . . . "
technologysucks 4 years ago
#1, I find it quite odd that you accuse me of showing respect to Christians
#2, Don't get me started on Scientologists.
dechha1981 4 years ago
Well, respect *relatively*. Saying "a time machine that shows you evolution in process" is more respectful then what you could've said: "something that shows you how the world REALLY was created." It was not a vague criticism, and was not written as "Well, OBVIOUSLY, you're wrong!". You know what i'm trying to say?
technologysucks 4 years ago
Believe me, I would LOVE to show Scientology as much respect as I show Christianity, but those fascist bastards will sue me.

If a od does pop out of the box, i would have to ask it every single question i possibly could, followed by demands of proof, then an eternity of my opinion about said god(s). Hopefully after all this it would give and i could rule...
anthwhite91 4 years ago 2
Well, I'd open it, but I'd be incredibly sceptical is the box disproved theism and atheism at the same time :s
StanLieksPi 4 years ago
Fair enough. Skepticism is good (Skepticism is what the question was all about actually) but the box just disproves YOUR beliefs. If an Atheist opens it, God's in there. If a Creationist opens it, it's a time machine. Etc.
dechha1981 4 years ago
If the box gave solid evidence to suggest there was a god. Then yes, I'd become a theist. But does this box tell you which religion is the right one (if there is a right one)? Otherwise I'd become a deist.
StanLieksPi 4 years ago
Probably not, I'd say just a generic everyday omnipotent all-powerfull being wi9th a white beard.
dechha1981 4 years ago
Then I'd become a deist. I wouldn't conform to a religion at all. =D
It's a good question to be honest. Nice one.
StanLieksPi 4 years ago
Very interesting i will contemplate on this to provide a reasonably intelligent anwser...atheist by the way.
anthwhite91 4 years ago
To be perfectly honest I'd be so impressed by the idea of a God-in-the-Box that I'd open it striaght away and start anoying which ever God popped out (preferably one of the cool ones, like the Horned God or Anubis) by asking a rediculous amount of questions about how everything was made and works.
AmberNightwolf 4 years ago
That's my plan on judgement day. If there is a god who'll send me to hell for not believeing in him, while I'm there I'm gonna say "Wait a minute, wait a minute, what's all this aboutT rial Wives and stuff?"
dechha1981 4 years ago
Open it in a heartbeat. Not only would I know the truth and origins of the universe, there would also be a heaven. People talk about science as though it's a religion, it's not, it is simply a pursuit of the truth; fitting our beliefs to our knowledge of the world...religion consists of fitting our knowledge of the world to our beliefs...therein lies the difference.
Carb86 4 years ago
VERY good answer :)
dechha1981 4 years ago
I'd go ahead and open it. I'm an atheist but if I ever come in contact with strong evidence going into another direction (let's say evidence of jesus Christ, Zeus or w/e) I'll be ready to accept it.. I'm not saying that my way of living is the right one, I'm simply saying that I have no idea of who is right or wrong and so I live my life as best as I can without following any specific belief systen.

Good answer.
dechha1981 4 years ago
i am an armchair scientist/philosipher myself, and an outspoken atheist. man, if i had that box i would lunge for it. i mean i'd be scared to open it, and it would most likely be a difficult paradigm shift, but i'd do it, not questions asked. there are very few things in the world that i want more than answers, escpecially when this answers could herald in the maturation of humanity.
grawk1 4 years ago
also, i'd like to add that if the devine being that i found in there was either yahovah, yaveh, or allah i'm not entirely sure whether i could handle living knowing who's in charge, and i may go so far as to deny his existance simply to keep myself and the people around me sane.

Yes.
My beliefs are indefinite, and I in no way think that I have the ultimate answer.
Might as well see what it is, right?
Although I must admit, this sounds a bit like a Pandora's Box situation, as many people become very distraught when their beliefs are challenged.
moscowmasha 4 years ago
When I made this video I tried to think of what might be in the box if an agnostic opened it. Had trouble thinking of something. The best I could come up with is "If you're an agnostic, uh... I dunno, maybe you have some political beliefs that can be disproven?"
Although actually in a way if you're agnostic then you've already opened the box, it's wide open.
dechha1981 4 years ago
Haha...weeeeeell, sort of.
moscowmasha 4 years ago
As a philosopher I would have little choice but to pursue truth and open the box. However, this hypothetical question a little vague. I appreciate the examples but lets add another layer. Lets suppose I am a perfect being that isnt wrong about anything. Then what could the box possibly contain? According to the law of non-contradiction, I cant be both right and wrong about the same thing at the same time in the same manner. hhmmm....
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Well, I suppose, if you were a perfect being who knew everything, then YOU would be the one to jump out of the box and say "Hi, how you doing?" when an Atheist opened it.
dechha1981 4 years ago
That is some of the worst philosophy I have ever heard. Let's add another layer to that. Let's suppose that as the perfect being, all I perceive is true. Let's also suppose that in this box the contents show the exact opposite of truth, but is always completely convincing. What would I see? According to the law of common sense, this is just me making up an impossibility and has no relevence to anything.
Carb86 4 years ago
You might say that same argument applies to the hypothetical question in the first place. Obviously u didnt read the question i asked, what could the box POSSIBLY contain. Can you think of something that is both up and down. Here is a hint, HERACLITUS DID! Don't talk of philosophy. You sound like an idiot when you do. Dechha postulated that to be such a being would entail being god. At least he ventured a guess. Go hang yourself Carb.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Haha! Well, as a philosopher, Justsumdude, you would have to pose questions already asked by others in a forum that has nothing to do with your point. The impressive elements of philosophy are the manner in which they arrive at either the question or answer..not in the stealing of others questions. Don't pretend you know anything about my intelligence, it makes you sound like an idiot...you know I'm cleverer than you. x
Carb86 4 years ago
Um, JustSumdude01, Carb86, would you two mind taking your flame war elsewhere please?
I'll settle your arguement right now;
The box tells the Truth. The box is right, you're wrong. The box does not change Reality, it only changes your knowledge of Reality. The whole point of the question is open-mindedness and willingness to seek the truthy. There.
dechha1981 4 years ago
I do understand the question. You decided to make a video to see whether atheists or religious people are more willing to alter their world view, believing atheists to be more likely; their views being based on the dynamics of science rather than the immovable dogma of religion.
Carb86 4 years ago
Actually I dont know of another philosopher that asked "If there is a box etc etc and I am a perfect being etc etc". If you know his/her name by all means speak it Zorothustra. I am glad philosophy impresses you but I dont see how you can say the impressive part of philosophy is logic ( since it is logic that guides us to our answers but I dont think it guides us to questions so much as we ask new questions based on the answers we get). Is logic that amazing to you?
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
I think I love you. You are my new favourite person.
Whether they asked about a box is inconsequential, the crux of the point is non-contradiction...as a philosopher you should realise that.
Logic guides us to both questions and answers, it is not necessary for an answer to be found before other questions are formulated.
Of course it's the logic that impresses me, the entire endeavour is meaningless without it. x
Carb86 4 years ago
Ok well, if the point is just non contradiction then I guess everything aristotle said and the logic he formed which is still used today is totally unoriginal if your argument holds since he wasnt the first one to think of non contradiction. Go ahead and say that to the APA, they will laugh at you. Semantics matter.
Also, please post anywhere in any platonic dialogue where logic leads them to a question and not an answer which prompts further questioning.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Carb86 4 years ago
Um, JustSumdude01, Carb86, would you two mind taking your flame war elsewhere please?
I'll settle your arguement right now;
The box tells the Truth. The box is right, you're wrong. The box does not change Reality, it only changes your knowledge of Reality. The whole point of the question is open-mindedness and willingness to seek the truthy. There.
dechha1981 4 years ago
PS Dechha did not postulate that to be the contradiction would entail being god, he claimed that you yourself as the perfect being would be god. what would you think? Hit me with something deep.
Carb86 4 years ago
I said nothing of contradiction except the law of non contradiction. what is this "to be the contradiction would entail being god". Scroll up and post where that gets said. I quote myself "Dechha postulated that to be such a being would entail being god". From your inability to understand the question, I believe that makes me more clever than you. How immature you must be to start a flame war over me asking one paradoxical question.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
The whole point of this excercise which you claim is "off topic" is actually "on topic". My point is, and as dechha has pointed out because of this dialogue, that you (opening the box) are wrong (about something) in this example. I simply questioned the premise that I HAVE to be wrong hoping to get some kind of epistemic justification, not to provoke a flame war. But you saw to that didnt you carb? good job.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
I...can't understand how you can so totally misinterpret the point of the video...even when Dechha made it blindingly obvious you still don't get it.
"You are wrong (about something)"?! That is not the point, not even in the least. The something that you are wrong about is the entire point. It's about your world view and how willing you would be to change it should you be proved wrong...the worst part is you try and sound intelligent. kisses.
Carb86 4 years ago
*sigh* the excercise I am referring to is MY excercise (why do I have to be wrong about something). Dechha agreed with me. "the box is right, your'e wrong" so this "wrong" suppososition is integral to the hypothetical question. the question simply doesnt work without it. Its amazing how you missed that when dechha clearly spelled it out for you.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Fucking hell. You are so fucking stupid. How the fuck can you completely miss it??!! Dechha was not agreeing with you, you fucking retard, the being wrong about the box is merely a means of arriving at the hypothetical end of the question, which is HOW WILLING ARE YOU TO CHANGE YOUR WORLD VIEW??!! Fuck me, you are so thick skulled.
Carb86 4 years ago
But this flame is so beautiful, you are my eternal flame.
"I said nothing of contradiction except the law of non-contradiction"...and that would have to do with...contradiction yes.
"Dechha postulated that to be such a thing would entail being god"...to what thing? If you read through your own paragraph you will see that the subject is the thing that is both up and down...and that is...yes it's the contradiction. Surely as a philosopher you above all should realise the importance of syntax.
Carb86 4 years ago
I repeat AGAIN since twice didnt get through to you. Dechha postulated that to be such a BEING would entail being god. what being are we referring to? it doesnt take an english major to realize we are talking about the hypothetical "perfect being" in my case. You should really look at who needs to brush up on syntax genius.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
to quote dechha "Well, I suppose, if you were a perfect being who knew everything..."
Seriously, how can you be this stupid? Now you are lying and making things up to try and make me look foolish. Anyone can clearly see that you could not be more wrong here. Christ its written in plain friggin english. Please tell me that english is your second language or you ate paint chips as a child.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Tell you what, reply if you want but I can't be fucked to speak to you anymore..you remind me of talkin to an evangelical christian, you can give them undeniable logic but they simply refuse to accept it...however I think you are just an idiot. There's no point me even bothering to reply to your retarded answers.
Carb86 4 years ago
You have only just 4 days ago given me the logic of your argument so that it can clearly be refuted. Dont be so quick to pat yourself on the back. Now we know that you misread what I posted and I have clarified for you though I doubt it confused anyone else. You clearly think too highly of yourself. Next time why dont you START by giving me "undeniable logic" and post your claim with its premises. A claim by itself is not undeniable unless it is a tautology.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
That was not my original point, if you notice it was written as a PS. It wasn't misread, it was miswritten.

dechha1981 4 years ago
Tell me if I am right. You think I was saying that I am a contradiction in this sentence i posted "I cant be both right and wrong about the same thing at the same time in the same manner". This all would have been cleared up if you posted where it got said like i asked. That statement does not mean that I am a contradiction, only that I cannot hold contradictory beliefs. If this is what caused the mix up, then I rest my case that you are an idiot.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Carb86, JustSumdude01, philosophical discussions are interesting but Flame Wars are not. I don't want to block either of you guys. Don't make me.

Carb86 4 years ago
"Can you...down" is another way of saying "can you think of or comprehend a paradox". "to be such a being" is a way of referring to a prior topic. I could have also said "the afore mentioned being" or "the being stipulated above" or even "the originally discussed being" . All of these are logically equivalent and all serve the purpose of reminding the reader of the previous discussion.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
There is absolutely no evidence in these statements that yields "the something that is both up and down is the being that entails being god". This cannot be made any clearer. You have made some logical jump somehow and arrived at conclusion that does not follow.
The two statements each have a clearly different subject and do not refer to eachother.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Perhaps adding the words "At least" before the word "Dechha" would clear up your confusion. This would alter the meaning to imply that Dechha understood the question and tried to rationalize it (as opposed to simply using Dechha as an example of how one might resolve the paradox) where as you clearly did not understand nor try to rationalize it.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Regardless, if you had clearly stated what you thought was wrong and cited the source in quotations IN THE FIST PLACE instead of starting this flame war and going on an ignorant attack I could have explained it all to you over a week ago. So let this be a lesson to you. Post your premises WITH your conclusion otherwise others have to guess at how you came up with your claim.
JustSumdude01 4 years ago
Your syntax was wrong, you know it was wrong, accept it.
Carb86 4 years ago
I did try to rationalise it, and my conclusion was the only part that I found impressive of anything you have written. If you are the perfect being that cannot be wrong, and the box also never wrong, then whatever was in the box would be an impossibility, or contradiction.
Carb86 4 years ago
(continued from previous reply, probably below) Therefore if you yourself were to be in the box, you would be that contradiction. The paradox is that you cannot be an impossibility, unless (and this was the part I found impressive) you were everything, you were up and down, truth and untruth, every possible answer; the only metaphysical being that would encapsulate this would be God, and in so being the question is answered. Let me know if you disagree.
Carb86 4 years ago
PS, I am in my final year studying biomedical science, currently at a 1st level (equivalent of A); I will also be going to med-school next year. I've never had an IQ test (to be honest I don't think they give a fair picture of overall intelligence), but my mum has an IQ in excess of 160 (as in the scale was not high enough), so genetically speaking I'm probably not gonna be an intellectual slouch. Have a little think about what that may mean.
Carb86 4 years ago
So you are on your way to med school? thats great! Im on my way to law school. But the last time I checked IQ isnt a genetic trait. Also, your grades arent a necessary or sufficient condition for high intelligence. Some earn high marks with only slightly above average IQ's through hard work. Others are brilliant but never cared much for school (think Ben Franklin). I am sure you think you made a convincing argument of some kind but I think everything you just wrote here amounts to Jack.

What would be the point of opening the box when it will disprove what ever you believe? What if you believe in something that's true? Does that mean the box has no purpose at all? I'd open it though. Even if it does disprove everything I believe, I'll still believe in it. Hmmm...

I totally agree, I'm not an atheist because I revel against god
I just looked at all the evidence, religions over history, incompatible claims and 'amazing' miracles, and reached the conclusion, its all man made.
to be honest if god existed and say hello, it would be nice to know there is life after death, so far all evidence points the other way.
so I won't give in to wishful thinking yet.

dechha1981 4 years ago
Why *wouldn't* anyone want to know the truth? The question you *really* want to ask is: If you were wrong would you accept it? It's insulting to insinuate that people aren't willing to be wrong.
Also: You're assuming that there's no way to know the truth already. There's no proof to say you couldn't already know what's in the box.
Without reserve, what's in that box is what I've been seeking all my life: Truth. It shows a person's honesty in their quest if they show any hesitation.
DiscerningOne 4 years ago
I don't want to give away too much just yet, but, I agree.
dechha1981 4 years ago
I would want to know. The box would clarify a great deal: it would indicate beliefs I held but wasn't aware of, ideas I held to be unquestionable, all that above and beyond the specific disproof. A box that disproves everything I believe would be the single greatest tool for self-discovery I can imagine.
TheCarruths 4 years ago
OK, think I need to clear this up a bit;
Use your imagination.
dechha1981 4 years ago
All I want is the truth to come out of that box and none of your example's offer that option.
So I wouldn't open the box as an Athiest or a Christian , but maby as a Scinetologist so I could find out how the brain really works.

If you are wondering, I believe in science.

Wait .. if I may rethink again ...

As I said, I believe in science.

The point of this video will be written in the comments section, as well as the conclusion I will have drawn.

I'm an atheist. I'd open the box.
Am I to assume that the point of this video is to show Christians how cowardly and uninterested in the truth they are?

Use Babelfish
And no cheating everyone else!
J'essaye de le garder tranquillité, mais oui, réellement j'essaye d'examiner cette théorie. L'enfer, peut-être chacun me prouvera mal. Pas jusqu'ici, cependant.
dechha1981 4 years ago
I don't need to use Babelfish. I'm Canadian. ;)

Even if someone else already gave the same answer you would, that's OK, just write that.
dechha1981 4 years ago
This is taking longer than I thought. As of this typing I've got 129 views, but I've only got 11 answers and only 3 of them are from non Atheists. Come on people! I really want to know what you all think!

i would like to say that evolution is observable now!
You mean Abiogenesis which is not related in evolution in any way.
Secondly, i would definetly look into the box. If the box shows christianity is true, i would most certainly try to do something radical like telling god how bad he is.

There's a Christian who sent me an answer by PM. It's possible he doesn't want his name shown, so I'll respect that. Anway, here's what he said;
"Such a box would make one wrong about everything, undoing the laws of physics, logic, math, gravity, thermodynamics, etc, thus destroying reality itself."
dechha1981 4 years ago
I would open it and it won't surprise me if I see evolution occurring because there is another name for Allah, we Muslims also call him AL-BARI (The Evolver)

I would open the box!If anyone ever finds god,in the living world,it would be an atheist....why not me!
worldlystone 4 years ago
i'm an atheist, and i'd happily open it! so that when god popped out, and said "how you doing?" i could punch him in the jaw for being a murderous ass hole. that is, if anything actually came out.

markle: Name three of your favourite action movies... Tell me what you like about the lead characters (assuming you like them).
jameskguy 4 years ago
jameskguy, while you're here, would you mind telling us what YOU would do with the box?
dechha1981 4 years ago
yippie, more trick questions. well, let's see... "last samurai"- the samurai king? then there's "iron monkey"- the donnie yen guy, then i'd probably say "kill bill" vol.1- oren ishi-ee [spelling?]. now what?
marklethanarkle 4 years ago
And what the hell has action movies got to do with this question?
dechha1981 4 years ago
If you want to ask your oun hypothetical questions, fine, but either do it on your oun video or answer MY question first. You don't get to ask other people questions unless you have the balls to answer my question first.
dechha1981 4 years ago
Mostly, I don't like you bothering other people who have the balls to answer my question without providing your own answer to the question first.
dechha1981 4 years ago
C'meon people! I know the "viewed" counter is going up. I'm not asking "would you de-convert", I'm asking, "Would you open the box?
