a hero? he was a racist anarchist who promoted terrorism and would kill any amount of innocent people to get what he wanted, your poor education is amazing
he's just like che guevara then. hollywood has warped their images. che was a murderous tyrant and guy was a terrorist. yet they're both made to look like martyrs . . . sad
@aydooknow Murderous Tyrant? Cuba voted that in because capitalism failed and was the real tyrant, you must be manipulated by republican media that either the Bay of Pigs was a justified attempted act of "Freedom" like every Imperial black hole the US creates, or that violence can't be positive and necessary.
@lastexile666 thousands died by his order. he arrested people for all sorts of fucked up reasons like being gay, or having aids,or even just men having LONG HAIR. basically if you didnt agree with him, he arrested you or had you killed.
@TetraUbik Hewas a man who was willing to stand up for what he believed in. He supported a catholic rebellion. The only reason he failed was because that his accomplices wrote an anonymous letter. And you have to understand that religious oppression was extremely common back then. All the majority wanted was a catholic monarch returned to the throne and when they wanted to change something about the king, it usually was. religious oppression was unfair, but the majority was at least satisfied.
this night is hell on earth if you have a dog lol. also don't say his a true hero the guy tried to murder people just because they did favor his religon. thats lame.
@pipuk3 Actually islam tells people to assault someone when they insult islam or some shit like that. Judaism also says that anyone who isn't a jew is basically an animal or the like.
But yeah western religions don't. But he wasn't doing it necessarily for the religion itself, but for the believers being disliked.
I think us New Zealanders are the only other country that follow this very English of traditions. Up until the late 80's it was a very fun and happy event to be part off. However idiots started placing fireworks into animals orifices. Fires were also common. Hence fire crackers have been banned in NZ. You can still buy fire works though but nowadays people just tend to go to public firework shows. No bon fires, no scare crow of Guy Fawkes. Sad really
Guy Fawkes rocks! On November the 5th I'm doing a bon fire on the street & throwing in dumbies of the Queen & other evil bastards in, like people of the corrupt Government...
@Loupster420 he was trying to change things. starting a revolution because catholics were treating poorly back then and he wanted to get rid of the king at the time so it would stop...i mean thats what i think happened.
So wait, he was trying to dismantle a protestant theocracy to install a catholic one? terrorist. murderer of innocent. idiot. Whats worth celebrating? on either side?
So it was about religion, the queen did not support catholics yet supported which religion? And you make a Guy Fawkes dummy and throw him in the bonfire in order to celebrate his action or the murder of him?
@saileddragonfly but blowing up people because the king didn't like Christianity is not really a noble cause... are is that a lie? is there more to it as usual?
Think V for Victory, the book and movie were done as V for Vendetta to allow that story to be made copyright.
But, like the Hells Angels, V for Victory started with the end of world war 2, a story in itself.
Now, add computers on a personal level, something that did not exist in that era, and the oppression provided by "King" Bush on this side of the pond, and you have it, an anonymous answer to a very real problem.
@IAMDEFOE So... he was a hero because he failed to impose one form of religious oppression over another? Or because everyone watched 'V for Vendetta' and supposed that Guy Fawkes was fighting against religious oppression? In reality, this is one of the saddest ironies in the use of Guy Fawkes' image: he wanted to establish another form of oppression in place of the status quo; not abolish government/religious oppression.
I'd just like to point out that up until 1853 (something along those lines) Guy Fawkes Night was a national holiday and any priests refusing to hold ceremonial church services on this day were considered crimals. So yeah, the tradition stays with us.
But it's not about hating Guy Fawkes, it's traditional and kinda hard to get rid of. Hang on, don't Americans celebrate Leif Erikson day, a day when the beginning of hating Indians began?
This is slander, Guy Fawkes was a hero for attempting something no one else dared to do for the sake of equality, unfortunately he failed but at least he tried
Yeah religious oppression is sumthin worth celebrating, only in facist britain. Even to this day the prime minister of britain is not allowed to be catholic nor is a catholic allowed to marry into the royal family, but it's swept under the carpet by everyone on that bigoted little hellhole.
So Nov. 5th is a celebrated date because England (now one of the most liberal countries in the world) was able to keep a building standing. When the very reason it was to be blown up was because a political leader was a biggot? A holiday celebrated for keeping the little guy/catholic faith down? The way things were being run in England back then, they should have blow a bitch up long before that. a perfect example of trying to keep the sheep in thier flock.

@soapandwafflesrule they were celebrating the fact that the king survived and the terrorists were captured and executed, they celebrated this by burning a dummy guy fawkes around the 5th of november, unlike christmas, pancake tuesday, easter and all other holidays the reasons behind this holiday is rather depressing
this year the effigies I will be burning on my bonfire are going to be of Gordon brown and the royal family, maybe president obama for good measure - while wearing my guy fawkes mask and letting off fireworks.

@TeamGYD Eh, not really. V for Vendetta was about a man dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask who opposed his corrupt government. Guy Fawkes opposed his government as well. However, the movie wasn't necessarily about Guy Fawkes.
Thank you for this! We don't celebrate Guy Fawkes night in Canada, but being a Brit, I wanted my children to know the story. They feel is it a sad story, with too many people hurting each other. Thank you for making it easy for them to understand.
it leaves me wondering 0.o Since they learned more of the story.... Is his figured burned out of respect? or to humiliated him for his plan? That's one of the only questions I cant seem to find..... Is HE celebrated? or is the kings survival celebrated?
It celebrates the failure of the gunpowder plot, so yeah the kings survival basically. He is burned on the bonfire to basically mock him and remember his execution (although his real execution was much worse).
Exactly right! that bullshit about people lighting joyful bonfires to celebrate the lifes saved of the previously doomed king and co. is a cover up. I am not Cof E nor Catholic i am infact a pagan so my comment does not support a religious "side" but its obvious its a mockery or people wouldnt burn a Guy every year.
Yup exactly, i mean, the word bonfire itself comes from "bone fire" from the days they used to throw live animals on the fire as sacrifices around halloween time, i guess people just like to believe those types of things aren't what they really are so it doesn't seem so "occult" or "sinister".
More likely to have been from the french "bon" meaning good than bone. I just find the celebration a tad hypercritical if we need to burn effigies why not ones of those that do the real damage to our planet!!
