Pretty good video, however I've always heard & gone by the rule not to turn ur protien skimmer on until the first fish has been in the tank for 6 weeks. This makes it so that while ur tank is cycling ur beneficial bacteria r not competing w/ the skimmer for what lil' waste there is to eat & can form strong colonies
Very informative and well excuted video, but running a wet dry filter on a FOWLR setup defeats the whole purpose of it. The live rock is your main source of biological filtration and if enough is used an external filter is unnecessary. Although I have a wet/dry filter and they are excellent for freshwater setups, bio balls are outdated technology and a magnet for excess phosphates and clog with debis over time. A skimmer is a good idea though.
Please advise you didn't mention proper lighting with the FOWLR system. Can I use regular compact florecent lighting or do I need to get something more powerful? What would the minimum wattage per gallon be?
hi, i have the same filter and i cant get the water level steady. the pump either doesnt suck the water out fast enough or when i adjust it, it slowly the pump the water level slowly decreases. i cant get it still. HELP ME!!!!!
The hydrometer has to get used to the salt water, it will not read the salt righ away from the package. What you do if it's the first time, u live it full of salt water for 24 hrs, then rince it with clean water, and test your water again.
im looking into setting up a 50 Gallon FOWLR. i have a 30 Gallon Tropical tank at the moment whcih i going to convert into a sump/wet dry filter but I dont want all the plumbing tubes (its horrible) how do i do this sort of set up? thanks
Hey, I'm setting up a 50 gallon fowlr aquarium as well. I bought a bag of salt that said "50 gallons" on it. So I put the salt in the tank, mixed it, and once it dissolved i measured with the hydrometer and it showed that there was no salt in the aquarium.
@TheEgoFanBoy1 Doing a change every 1-2 weeks, or more often when needed, removes decaying matter, reduces nitrate build-up, replaces trace elements, and makes more oxygen available to fish.
Do you have any videos on seting up a coral aquarium? If not, you should make one! I love these videos, they are very helpful, and i would like to start a coral reef aquarium, but some of the other videos that i watch are very confusing, but not these!
hi i'm looking to set up a 75 gallon FOWLR aquarium with strictly peaceful fish, do i need as powerful of lighting and can a normal power filter coupled with a protein skimmer and a powerhead be enough filtration without the use of a SUMP
thanks for your time,

P.S will dr tim's one and only fuction well during a saltwater fishless cycle?
Bare with me here... I'm new in salt water tanks but I have fresh water tank all my life. I bought 20 lbs. of cured live rock and I noticed today that some part of my live rock turned white. Can anybody help me? I also have a Bio-Spira, mix it in the tank?
I got a question, what Wet/ Dry is this guy using? And What is the pad on top of the Bio Balls called? I have one of these filters i got of craigslist, but it does not have that kind of pad, the previous owner through it away. Were can i find one? What are they called? PLEASE HELP!!!
Does the bio balls and filter media will help stop algae growth because I got a lot of algae growth 2 days ago but I can still see some growing? do I need a sump to stop algae growth better then using a hang on cansiter filter right?
@tvshowuploader3 Testing is key here, not necessarily which filter. Best to always first make sure your water quality isn't creating an ideal environment for algae - check your nitrates daily and perform frequent partial water changes. Bio balls and sumps may in fact create more nitrates, so you have to be that much more diligent in your husbandry. Other thoughts?
@tvshowuploader3 not going against what he said but you may want to add some sort of benificial bacteria, if you super saturate the water with it the bacteria eats the same food algea does so the algea starves, but if you have a uv steralizer you may want to hold off on the bacteria lol
@mitch5655 that's an Eshopps Overflow and Marineland Marine Series Advanced In-Sump Skimmer. Thanks! An equipment list and printable instructions accompanying this video area available on our aquatic website.

why do you recommend weekly 50% water changes? I heard it is best to wait until nitrite and ammonia read zero before doing any water changes.

After using Dr. Tim's "One and Only" can you add the fish directly?
dubiousintent 2 years ago
Yes . . . in fact the addition of the fish will help keep the nitrogen cycle running by providing a source of nitrogen.
