  • cheap trick did a pretty good cover in the 80's.

  • it was John Peel's favourite single of 1977

  • I fuckin hate smoke on the water!!!

  • The older The tunes from The Motors get the better they sound. All of them.

    GAAAAWWWWDDDDD BLESS YER

  • Bought it then in all formats and still love it!!!

  • John Peel festive 50s baby! Lives on after death!

  • Ahhh...remember when music was this fucking good.....proper musicians playing proper instruments....

  • thats the sound late 70s punk rock Great!!!!

  • Lol!!! Think the other guy was Ricky Slaughter . Could be wrong?

  • Awesome British Pop at its best--just as fresh as when it was first heard. Daniel from California.

  • Bloody amazing song , turn it up to 29 on the old ford cougar cd player and rock my way to work, watch the faces turn as i pass them by . awesome bloody great track the louder the better

  • The absolute rocking-est song of all time! This is the Kinks for the punk era.

  • for hiroto

  • With respect to kentishbloke .......great stuff.

  • I saw them live in a bar in Lansing, MI back in the day! They were great.

  • Killer tune.

The imperious Mutt Lange giving us a preview of his later glories.

  • top top intro...am lucky enough to have vinyl copy of album...go get it!!!!!!!...

  • chooooon.

  • Fantastic track - I bought the album on the strength of seeing the - now sadly removed - clip of the Motors performing this on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Often when you do that you find that the track you bought it for is the only decent track on the album .............. not in this case - the whole album's a total gem !!! Don't miss it if you don't already own it !!! :-)

  • Thank God for youtube. I was beginning to think I imagined this group. I was introduced to this album by a great guy named Kenny from Glasgow whom I met in Arizona back in the 70's. He also introduced me to Ian Drury and the Blockheads.

  • I've been enjoying many of the cuts from this album. I just might have to buy it!

  • F*** ME OLD BOOTS, TOP TACKLE THIS...........

  • Wow, this is great. I had never heard this before. Thanks for posting!

  • @David - i'm not saying the magic involved in getting simple pop chords and riffs to form a classic song is easy peasy, but it's a comparatively easy song to learn and play considering,..... considering i'm not a good guitar player and i appear to be the first person on t'internets to attempt to tab it. well, 'describe' it is perhaps more the word....

  • I bought this LP on the strength of hearing Dancing the Night Away featured every Friday night as the introduction to Tony Wilson's early evening spot on Granada TV many years ago.

To this day, it remains as one of my all time favorites.

  • That is without doubt the truth...It was well regarded in TV circles of the day. A real CLASSIC !

  • @kentishbloke classic vinyl twelve inch. Outstanding jangly bridge

  • @roughyed7 and me, still got it!

    And its for SALE!

  • A top tune.

  • Perfectly crafted pop/rock. Great song.

  • @radioroidar

    Indeed.

The first time I heard it was on the "Catch a Wave" compilation.

  • Classic intro - one of the 3 best intros in rock, the other two are Smoke on the Water and Whatever you want

  • I'll agree with you on Whatever You Want lol :))

  • @deeko1912

    Terrific stuff.

  • @deeko1912 Somebody Got Murdered,Stairway to Heaven, Won't Get Fooled Again :-)

  • @deeko1912 Make it the four greatest; add The Faith Healer by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band

  • Brings back many memories of carefree days, thanks for uploading it

  • @TUNEMAKER1701

    Pure power pop.

  • anyone got any speed or did Bram snort it all.

intro worh sampling for dance tune

  • ok - i came across this vid as i was looking for tab myself so am working it out as i go along.

all the chords for the verse are hammer-on/hammer off - take your index finger off on the A and the D. the descending motif is a barre starting on the 12th fret, i think. There's a little pre chorus that's A/D/B/E (again, i think - it's better with barre than open chords). The bit at 3.55 is barre E 12th fret, Barre A 14 the fret then repeat 2 frets down.

if this is all elementary, i apologise!

  • @markemoon2 No need to apologise.. I don't play guitar. Just happy you found this and It inspired you :)))))

  • btw - just it on Guitar Heroes as well - i always knew the track from djing but something about that performance makes it come alive.

my Dad also saw the program and, never usually phoning me, called me to rant about how good it was for a good 10 minutes. There's 3 more on tonight and i'm gonna have to revisit my OGWT dvds.... gems and diamonds!

  • hi there - tab is pretty simples for the Byrdsy jangle bit. Standard 'A' - little finger on 3rd fret of B string, remove, then play B string open and faff with that until you get it. same again but without any fretted 'D' string. then up to a standard 'D'. net chord is a standard D but slid up 2 frets.

main part - hammered on/off E chord. Then A and D. not sure about the desending motif that mirrors the vocal line, but seems just a barre E chord slid down from the 14th fret.. should get u thru!

  • Hey Fella..this is kentishblokes channel. I don't do SHIT lol

  • @markemoon2 Ah right....easy peasy.........Go make a song as good as that then!

  • Ive just seen it on guitar heroes as well, realy good band i thought .i was blown away by gary moore ,can that guy play guitar !

  • This is a superb number - I remember it from when I was a young lad of 14....

It was John Peel's single of the year for the year it was released.

I've just seen it on 'Guitar Heroes at the BBC' - brilliant.

Does anyone have 'Whiskey & Wine'?

Pity they went on to 'Airport' eh?

    Where are they now?

Oh - 'The other bloke' was called 'Ricky Slaughter'......jeez....

  • Has anyone got the tab for this??

  • @thebighutch see above :)))

  • Actually, I LIKE The Motors!

  • Great track - a very underrated band.

  • Incredibly this was played on Radio 2 a couple of weeks back - a listener had chosen it for Chris Evans' Gobsmackers spot!

  • Wonderful stuff. The jangly middle 8 bit is one of the most sublime bits of music ever recorded.

  • And the other bloke lol

    Shit hot song !!

  • If I remember correctly, this track was used by the late Tony Wilson as an introduction to his regular Friday evening slot on Granada TV in the good old days.

Can't say that I was too impressed by TW's show at that time but his intro music so impressed me, I went out and bought The Motors LP.

I've still got it but my old turntable has long expired, so it's so nice to hear it again.

  • reading festival 1978 i danced the night away awesome track

  • fantastic have not heared this in eons saw it live on the ogwt bloody great posting

  • I rocked out wildly to this one in my bedroom many, many times. A fucking classic.

Anyone have "Whiskey & Wine" ?

  • Thanks indeed for posting if ever the word classic was needed it is for this song.

  • cheers...Yes this is timeless :))

  • Brilliant.... I saw these at some place in Soho London.... cant remember its name...just after I had a silver knife hanging from my ear lol

  • this is a fuckin classic

  • Got Pissed on leave.

    Lol.

    Good song.

  • The other bloke was Ricky Slaughter.

  • cheers Roy :))

  • Punk not really punk. Up there with Eddie and the Rods and Dr Feelgood. Lot of great stuff flooded the airwaves in 77 that is still sounding good taday. Thanks for this.

  • Wicked song!! Thanks for posting

  • A Good Rocker-- forgot about this one! Keeps my feet going!

  • I first saw them in the wints at Penzance in 1977- this really brings it back!

  • Thanks for posting this Tim 5*****

  • Thanks for this one.. I'm really trying to find the cut "Phoney Heaven" of of The Motors' first record. Any clues? Anyone have it out there?

    Thanks mates. - FlyingO

  • I've got it..Will put it on later If I remember :)

  • Mahalo nui loa! (Thank you very much) as we say in Hawaii. - Mike O.

  • I went to see Rockpile at The Roundhouse sometime in the late seventies and The Motors were the support. I never thought I'd see it happen but they blew Rockpile away! Didn't they go a bit soft after they hit the big time?

  • Thanks for posting again, Tim.

Hope to see you in October.

    Greg O.

  • One of the great rocking songs of all time methinks.I remember John Peel picking this out in 77 along with You Beat The Hell Outta Me.

  • su-fukin-perb !

  • Fabulous song - brilliant album too, must dig it out!

  • Thanks Kentishbloke for adding this classic Motors track, one I had as a single in 1977. I'm actually a Sussex bloke who appreciates the 'proper' music of the 1970's, not the crap songs that are mass-produced today.

  • Christ Tim ...another winner got this one on 12" Blue Record with Whiskey and Wine on the B side...nice one

  • Nice one Tim

  • Nice bit of restoration work...

  • I don`t think much of them Tim...except for the other bloke...he`s absolutely fntastic, mate!

Five ***** and fav! God save the queen.
