In the book, Jane wants to leave because shes *cold*, but R doesn't let her go and he's showing his possessiveness when he says "Go, then Jane Go!" and he won't let go of her hand. She's trying to pull away and he's basically saying "I'll let you go when I want you too". This scene is not true to the book - he's too seductive here whereas in the book the impression you get is one of R's possessiveness. This is probably the first time in R's life that a woman walked away from him.
This was a well-acted movie and the cast was pretty good. The only problem I had was Michael Fassbender...great actor but I actually think he was too good-looking to be Rochester. :-)
I'm happy to leave a hate comment :) This movie cannot or ever compare to the BBC version. That was THE BEST. This was like some retarded spoof of Twilight :D :D :D :p
Perfect example of a real woman. Leave him wanton. Exactly what I would do. Let him want me for a while. Make it a challenge. Don't just open your legs!
@maccaslove Then I'm not a real woman, I'd open my legs faster than he could say please. That's a fine specimen of a man right there, you might never get another chance.. :D
In this scene, and,in the 06 movie with Stephens/Wilson,the actors come the closest to a kiss than in any other versions. But there's one over the top romance scene from the 1983 version where Jane (Clarke) comes out of her room after shutting herself up for a while, and trips over Rochester's (Dalton) legs, and he catches her and holds her close to him.OH,MAN!!!!
@TheTrueRose Oh, I wasn't actually asking! It's just my silly way of saying "thanks for liking my comment" :) Calling me a genius was pretty nice too. My ego ain't gonna fit through the door tonight.
Even when i love Tim Dalton in this character, his accent was weird for me.This is also great, the way he stares at her piercing her is like OMG.I loved the movie, the trailer looked so diff from the book but i liked this version. It should've been longer, they deleted some amazing parts...those parts with these actors would've blown our minds. For ex when he stood in front of the door not letting her pass...i missed the playfulness he had n she got later. They kept his dark side though XD
bevafter9, did you read a richly annotated version one-you'll see that Charlotte Bronte IS Jane Eyre, what a tragic, glorious life. Edward from book=George C Scott, however, Michael will do quite nicely, thank God his mother and sis loved the book enough for him to want to play the part. I can say only one thing to Mr Fassbender: meine ruh ist hin, mein herz ist schwer-ach, durft' ich fassen und halten ihn! Und kussen ihn so wieich wollt, an sienen kussen vergehen sollt!
it's chilling how intense he is. it's like he's looking into her soul, he hardly blinks, and his voice is so haunting. lol, this scene makes me a little scared. lol just because it's SO intense.
God, how many of you wanted him to pull her close after she said 'I am cold'? I know I did, but at the same time, their restraint and respect for each other is equally as beautiful.
There's something about his tone when he repeats "cold" back to her. As though he's saying "what? Is being around me like this not enough to keep you warm?" He seems a little offended at the idea of her leaving him, but looks at her with such passion as she goes.
When you see the whole thing -- this is the second half! -- it improves. It is sooo clear that he's smitten. And she feels the same way. :) I had no problem with Fassbender's portrayal. I grew up with Dalton. He's just had his crown snatched!
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the clips that are available on youtube, for now, I stand firm that Toby Stephens kicks Fassbender's ass in being Rochester. Rochester is passionate, passionately desperate, this guy is just icy. I have no feeling that the person he plays should even remind us of Rochester. He's sexy and his voice is aahhhh and all that, but yeah.
@PapillonBleuNoir look around for a fanvid -- perhaps the violin sonatina. Passionate he is -- pity there was so little of the teasing banter in the movie. :)
@PapillonBleuNoir uhm no passion? Have you seen the movie? Fassbender is the king of passion. I thought he was way too young to play Rochester, but I stand corrected. Best Rochester of all time.
@deblemond No, I agree. Well Mr. Rochester is not exactly ugly, but you wouldn't look at him twice, if you get what I mean.. I always thought Toby Stephens fitted better for the role as Rochester, but we'll see how Fassbender delivers when the movie gets out on DVD.. 8)
@ReyyanK charlotte describes him more than once as ugly, jane is the one who is just plain, but i loved fassbender as rochester even if he was not as she described him XD i hope you do as well :p i haven't watched the bbc series yet, i'm hoping to watch it soon
@deblemond yeah, when he asks her if she finds him handsome and she replies "no", that was a bit laughable. If Michael Fassbender isn't handsome, than no one is. Yet he's so talented he makes a wonderful Rochester.
@GeekGirl1977 by no means did i mean that he wasn't an excellent choice, he was and i love him as mr. rochester basically i was just pointing out that michael fassbender is hot!
@deblemond I've come to the conclusion he's even more than hot. When I first saw him in action I thought "where did they hide such an amazing actor?" and then "he's even Beautiful with a capital B". He's the best actor I've seen in ages and he's even handsome. Plus, he even seems to have a working brain....Mr Fassbender is going to conquer the world with his talent and a killer smile :-)
The movie is great, but the ending left me wanting. Mia is not exactly my favourite Jane, but Fassbender is a TO DIE FOR Rochester. This clip on the big screen is delicious!
This girl is trapped in a dark room with a hungry lion. My heart would have been thumping out my chest. As an employer, dude would of freaked me out. Hot or not.
Every single new clip I see for this movie makes me want to watch it more!! This scene especially is quite powerful, they are both fighting their own feelings but I get the sense that their restraint came pretty darn close to breaking.
I love how far apart they start out and by the time the scene is done they are almost kissing! This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Very sexy, very passionate and gripping! All I know is I wouldn't have had that restraint, I would have jumped his bones and let him warm me up, lol!!!!!
I love the tension in this scene as well. I think that both actors showed great restraint in playing the scene without overacting. Much of the power is in the simplicity and economy of it.
Mia Wasikowska was marvelous in "The White Ribbon" and will be a wonderful Jane. I forwarded this great news to many who also love the classic. Can't wait to see the film!
