Biracial is too vague. Is someone is half indian and chinese, could they really say Obama represents them? I doubt it.
Also, African American seems quite accurate. His father was African and his mother was American. To say he is "black" is a bit of a stretch, I agree with that.
@xxxxFootballxxxx Yeah but just because he doesn't look white doesn't mean he looks Black either or just black. You know there is an in between look for biracial mixed with black and white and it doesn't look white or black it looks mixed or often times mistaken as being a Latina look to those that think Hispanic is a race to them Hispanic has a look and a lot of Biracial black/white people are mistaken as looking like their a part of the Latina group rather than the black group.
@xxxxFootballxxxx #2: And I could tell Obama was Biracial when i first saw him
I think you would have to be blind not to be able to see that either that or haft to be in denial and just keep telling yourself that he looks only black because it makes you feel better about looking and not being able to pass as anything besides black yourself ( not saying you just speaking in general
@xxxxFootballxxxx #3: ( and I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with looking black because there soooo isn't, but there are blacks out there that cant stand the fact that they look black and wished they looked a White/Black Biracial person so because of some blacks being jealous over the stereotypical biracial look ( key word is SOME not saying all ) they will say that a biracial person doesnt look mixed when they know damn well they really do.
@xxxxFootballxxxx #4: Now I'm in no way saying you yourself or even remotely saying all blacks secretly feel this way I'm just talking in general about the ones that really do but wont ever admit to it cause they are ashamed of how they secretly feel
@xxxxFootballxxxx .#5: These particular blacks are the blacks that say people like Mariah Carey , Jeniffer Beals just look like light skin black people when they know damn well before they were told that these people had black in them they were totally clueless and thought they were white and they know it,
@xxxxFootballxxxx #6: The same people that say people like Alisha Keys , and Haley Barry, Jasmine Guys Tia and Tamera twins, and Barack Obama look totally black to them when they know damn well they don't but by saying these people look totally black makes them feel better about not looking mixed like them
@xxxxFootballxxxx .# 7: And if you think I'm lying then ask yourself this, why is light skin and so called " good hair" so envied in the black community ? Its not the dark skin and kinky hair that's looked at as a good thing, its the light skin and so called good hair, and mixed facial features that's envied.
@xxxxFootballxxxx #8: The painful reality is that you have blacks out there that if they had the choice would choose anything besides black and are pissed off because they dont have that choice while a biracial person does and CAN pass for other things besides black.
@xxxxFootballxxxx@xxxxFootballxxxx #9: And also these particular blacks that secretly feel this way are the same blacks that go out of their way to tell a Biracial person that they are black because of the " One drop rule "
@xxxxFootballxxxx #10: Said mixed person could look Lilly white and these particular black people will tell the Lilly white looking mixed person that they look black to them just light skinned, when in reality they know damn well said Lilly white looking person looks nothing of the sort not even light skin they look white period. I've even heard some blacks say that Wentworth Miller just looks like a light skin black person when they know damn well they are lying.
I'm from the UK and mixed-race people here (a majority of them) proudly call themselves mixed-race and see Obama as such.
Of course, some ignorant Blacks...and whites are upset by this, but that's their own insecurities that they need too sort out.
Obama in my factual view is the first Mixed-race (Bi-racial for you Americans) president not the first Black president of the USA. In Britain, we have the first mixed-race racing champion in the world. Oh, I'm a Black English brother.
I totally agree w/ this video. I am biracial (half black and half white) and I don't appreciate the media calling him black. I feel like he should have spokeN up and said that he is mixed both black and white. Maybe if he did this society would not have the box called "OTHER" to fill in on forms - you mixed people know what I am taking about.
try being mixed with african american and african or caribbean ethnicities and you are going to have social problem if you are born and immersed into the american culture. why? bc african americans have had a history of nativist prejudice against anyone who's parentage is not purely african american.
and if you try to claim caribbean with your mixed parentage of being 1/2 african american and 1/2 caribbean, and is born and immersed into the american culture yet having NEVER set foot in the caribbean before, then you are a HYPOCRITE.
African identity in the Americas is a very interesting topic, one that could fuel many episodes. You bring up interesting points, especially the "one drop" perception, which is applied to all non-whites but is especially strict with people with African origin. The issues between Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Americans are also very interesting, and on a greater scale Pan-Africanism and how it has come about.
I heard about the first part, didnt know she married a Chinese Canadian. Its really surprising that Obama, whose family is so diverse has come to prominence. We're used to hearing things like "Americans' wont accept a :fill in the blank:" let a lone someone with such a "mixed" story.
Obama is a man of 2 rac-groups he is mixed-race not Black.

Yeah, it kind of makes me mad too. i'm mixed as well. Its like: 50% white. 50% black. How is he more black than white?
xxpandafacexx 3 years ago 2
To xxpandafacexx,
Because he doesn't LOOK white.
Race is really only about appearance, not genetics.
xxxxFootballxxxx 3 years ago
I don't think he looks very "black" either. He looks like man who is biracial and I don't see why we can't refer to him that way.

even though obama is half black/white, he will be able to identify as white but with the one drop rule being applied, he is considered black.
