Lol thats funny it reminded me of this one time when my marching band was at competition and a judge picked up this girls trombone slide which she accidentally pushed out too far.
I wish the judge would have helped my friend when his shako fell off during finals in 1987 (Star of Indiana). They just played the last note of the opener. On the "horns down", his shako tumbled off. He was about 6 steps behind the front sideline around the 40 yard-line on side 1. The judge picked it up, looked at my friend, then placed on the front side-line. That would have sucked marching finals with no shako!
There are so many things about this 26 second video that make me crack up. I especially like how the music fits perfectly with all the shenanigans going on.
I lost my third valve slide once and a judge came over and gave it back to me. I was extremely lucky because I had a small solo later in the show, it would have been a complete disaster.
@Typet360 dude, a guard girl kicked my trumpet out of my hand in the first movement of a show, and the guard said they heard the judge say "Who's the idiot who left their trumpet on the field?"
@skaterplayer2 - In fact, I dropped a stick while marching with my high school band and picked it up as smoothly as possible and the judge in the box said on the critique tape: "Nice way to pick up your stick drummer." I was told to leave it there if it happened again.
@skaterplayer2 When I marched in drum corps, I was surprised by how much interaction there was with the judges. Most high school circuits have taken the judges off the field. In DCI, the drills move so fast that you have to communicate with the judges. There were a couple of times that I had to tell a judge to watch out and I can even remember members picking up debris that had blown onto the field and handing it to a judge during the show.
at one of my shows the percussion judge picked up a snares stick and started commenting on the shotzone that was etched into it. then he gave it back after he was done "judging:" the stick. lol
almost all DCI judges will be really kind enough to pick the stick up & give it back, but make sure you say "Thank you!" or chances are that they won't bother returning the stick back!
If I am not mistaken, that was a wet field too! When the field is wet, you see all kinds of falls. Like in Jackson, MS in 1994. Everybody had at least one fall.
man, our hornline had it so rough with that opening drill. It was all jazz running, someone fell almost daily. During finals week, a tuba inverted his bell during a run-though cause he fell in the opening sets.
No. Judges almost always pick it up and give it to one of the drummers, either by putting it in the pouch at a halt, or by handing it to the drummer. But throwing it to the drummer is something I've never seen!
