  • How can any decent and moral person follow a god that would demand a father kill his own child? What the hell is wrong with people? It sounds more like a mafia tactic designed to test loyalty to the family.

  • huge fan, i love your videos, one quick minor point, what would you think of using more historically accurate portrayals of biblical characters? instead of the usual eurocentric mythological blue-eyed straight nosed visions that artists claim middle eastern/jewish/african people resemble? i think we participate in religious visual propaganda when we perpetuate these race mirroring mirages, keep up the blindingly good work (no pun intended ;)

  • nice vid! Loved the pt of VFX ignoring things that don't line up but moreso, MISSING the obvious parallel of the thorns! hahaha and that part of Abe killing his son so that god could "know" he was faithful and thus could build his chosen race upon Abe is chilling. wow, I didn't know there was a possible earlier version w/o the ram. Makes total sense. Lots of things were excised and altered and so much for respecting the inspired words of god.

  • Hey Brett. Are you a Biblical Scholar in RL? You really seem intimately familiar with the literature. :)

  • Hey Brett, Once again I am very impressed with the quality of the video. Isaac was not Abraham's only son. Abraham also had a son named, Ishmael. Ishmael's mom (Hagar) was Abraham and Sarah's slave. Isaac was his mothers only son. The adversary (Satan) appeared to her (Sarah) and told her that her son was dead. Maybe VenomfangX forgot to mention it. It isn't easy to make a video. When we study the new testament we keep finding regur

  • wow how nice a slave

  • VFX has that William Lane Craig thumb going on. Is that from holding the bible too long?

  • I don't know what it was, but the revelation about Isaac was absolutely chilling.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't VFX ranted in the past about how he thinks Jews and Catholics are wrong to rely on traditions apart from the Bible? So why would he rely on Jewish tradition to find Eliezer's name? Oh wait, there I am expecting consistency from VFX.

  • @GuineaPigDan He doesn't know he is. He's relying on another goofball apologist for his schtick: Chuck Missler.

  • There is also evidence that the temple was built on top of Jupiter's temple but that part is always conveniently omitted.

  • Blew my mind with the Abraham and Isaac story.

  • The alternate (E source only) version of Abraham was simply grotesque in its cruelty. I had chills running down my spine.

  • VFX's poor examples aside, his main point fails totally as well, as the writers of the NT would have known everything about to OT, so they could write in all kinds of references, just as they evidently did with some of the OT prophecies to shoe-horn them to fit the life of Jesus.

  • Why does the eagle on PCS's shirt have breasts?

  • You do an excellent job of debunking garbage. Thorough and accurate as always.

  • To anyone criticizing VenomFangX, Sean is mentally ill. Keep that in mind when producing these videos. I really don't think Sean can help himself. He shows no insight that he has a problem.

  • @mikeyvester Of yes he does! You ignorant xxxxx!

  • I've never understood this huge importance that theists put on the so-called "sacrifice" of god's only son, Jesus. How is this a sacrifice? Didn't god and Jesus both know beforehand that he was going to come back and spend eternity in blissful heaven? Doesn't that make this sacrifice silly and utterly worthless? Would anyone value a sacrifice that is immediately given back with an additional reward for making it in the first place? And then we are actually expected to be thankful for that.

  • @8698gil simply when Jesus died he washed the people of their sins. he also created the path for atonement and showed that we could have eternal life. thats the most important part of which Christianity is based on, the ability to die and comeback as eternal (not immortal very different). but i may be a bit wrong been awhile since i read the bible myself. also not all theist believe in Jesus or put importance on the death and rebirth of Jesus, just Christians.

  • Great vid. Please keep them coming.

  • One thing I dislike in this video so far is the assertion that the one guy would want to spend time with his son and wish for a "miracle".. This is pretty common bias. See it a lot in movies where they have a woman supposedly from past era weeping over being raped, etc. Modern society has a completely different mindset regarding so many things. Not to mention if such an account were true, why would he not want to kill his kid and send him to better place(assuming he believed in heaven)

  • @xESOTERlC Three things: You likely have a point with the sentimental value. Ancient people may not have shared our view of children. However, a son (firstborn or otherwise) was highly valued in ancient societies. It is the reason Isaac is singled out for sacrifice. Most children died before the age of 5 and sons were highly coveted. To lose one to death, especially an unnecessary one, would have been torture. Finally, ancient Israelites didn't believe in an afterlife.

  • @brettppalmer Yeah, is was more the afterlife that I was referring to in this. . However, there was also the sentimental insinuation. Leisure of the modern age has allowed humanity to attach so much merit to "emotion".

Anyway, I greatly appreciate your videos and respect your knowledge/intelligence and was just remarking on one aspect that didn't sit well with me.

  • @xESOTERlC And it didn't sit well for good reason. It's a consideration I should have made! I guess I let my own modern "dad" side take over during that part of the video! ;)

  • @xESOTERlC Would you kill your Son for YHWH?

  • @ILYIAB ? If I believed whole-"heartedly" in the existence of a benevolent god and an afterlife paradise known as heaven... Heck yeah I would. I'd slaughter em as they popped out

  • @xESOTERlC See! You are a tool!

  • @ILYIAB Feel free to enlighten me and substantiate your diatribe

  • @ILYIAB You'll next tell me that anyone that truly "loved" their kids wouldn't give them up under any circumstance, thus elucidating the hypocrisy n lack of credibility in your claims.

  • @xESOTERlC Have you seen the movie "Sophie's Choice"? You think your thoughts are new? That a difficult decision has never been made? Shame on you.

  • @ILYIAB o.O lol. Or just feel free to say random drivel.

  • @xESOTERlC Hey Gary. So you think it's OK to do whatever your god tells you? You are on Mohamed Atta's side? Good to know.

  • One has to wonder why would all powerful god need animal sacrifice or any kind of sacrifice? It sounds so idiotic yet for believers it's totally normal. WTF? How many generations do we have to go through to get rid of this kind of reasoning?

  • If Shawn was right, all he proved that Jesus was a ripoff of Jewish myths instead of pagan ones.

  • Jesus, VFX, don't you know that Isaac was NOT Abraham's only son? He wash't even the OLDEST son.

    Idiot.

  • His video comments are hilarious. All supporting comments. Anyone not supporting him, is banned and their comments removed. It demonstrates such a clear lack of confidence, that im surprised his blind followers are unable to activate just 1 measly brain cell and figure that out. But they probably read them and say, "Wow, everyone supports VFX!! He must be the new Messiah!!" lol.

  • Genesis is a complete waste of good paper.

  • @SissingPyd That is not true. You can roll a lot of cigarettes in that paper.

  • @SissingPyd

It's so funny. It has a talking snake, guy getting killed for masturbating, and God being threatened by a Tower!

  • @Mectrixctic Yes, it's a real hoot! But have you ever read Revelations?

Now that must be one of the strangest things ever written. The person or persons who wrote that must have been high as kites on magic mushrooms. It's as crazy as anything from the drug fuelled but nontheless very creative 1960's.

  • The VFX prick has banned me from commenting on his drivel. What a creatard.

  • @SissingPyd He is a narcissist and bans anyone who says anything that isnt praising him

  • @EarlFaulk I only suggested that he seek further mental health treatment for his mixed delusional disorder.

  • Yeah, believers won't go and check their sources, but the first thing I did when you started saying that the stopping of the sacrifice probably wasn't in the original? I looked it up! ... I wonder how many Christians have a Bible readily on hand in their phone/tablet... I wonder the same of atheists...

  • Just became 2012, too damn drunk to make good comment. But goddamn I love all your vids Brett!! :) Soo glad to see you back in action man!

  • @15:31 Now i want to watch the three stooges... Thanks....

  • Your tonal qualities/mannerisms greatly remind me of Sam Harris, which makes your videos a great pleasure to listen to

  • @AtheistToothFairy I agree totally dude. These vids are so goddamn cool, sensible, logical, and well spoken, it's like listening to the best heavy metal bad ass song you ever heard in a spoken voice.

  • @6stringsbrainfingers:"These vids are so goddamn cool, sensible, logical, and well spoken"

While I can't agree with you about heavy metal music (too old for that stuff), I of course do agree in your assessment of the author

  • I didn't watch the first two videos, and am 1:13 into this one, and I have this to say. Why would there be CODES in the bible? Wouldn't it be easier just to come out and say something? Clearer and easier to understand? Seriously, why codes, that is so stupid! "Hey let's do this stuff in code so the true believers won't be able to fully understand or correctly interpret what we are trying to say! What a great idea!" This so so so so extreme stupid! I've got a bible code for my ass! lol

  • @TenchiJeff Because the god of creationism is Loki and he loves codes and tricks and stuff like he hides dinosaur bones in deep earth and trades radioactive elements for nonradioactive ones and makes light move in fast forward to reach the earth from millions and billions of light years away in a mere six thousand years.

  • What kind of sick god would order a man to murder his son? What kind of sick father would agree to do so?

  • I used to walk into Moriah but I took a mastersword to the face. (Damn Link and his obsession to hitting chickens)

  • So, Abraham is, a man who heard voices in his head telling him to murder his son, is the "Father of the Faith"?

  • @Akira625 Yes, that is very true. It all went downhill from then on.

  • Comment removed

  • Can't believe there's still people in 2011-2012 arguing about such debilitating barbaric beliefs... It looks so much like the myriad of other religions from this place and age...

  • I used to walk into Moriah, then I took an arrow in the knee...

  • @Hydralisk731 It has become a meme! But let me guess, someone stole your sweetroll?

  • @brettppalmer Yeah and it's horrible, isn't it?

  • @brettppalmer What the hell is all this Moriah stuff about??

  • @brettppalmer It hasn't just become a meme, it's become the most overused and unfunny since the cake is a lie.

  • @Hydralisk731 One does not simply walk into Moriah

  • Great videos dude.

  • Once again an excllent video, thank you very much. You're setting the bar very high for others :-)

  • why would a god give a lamb to be sacrificed back? How could isaac sacrifice something he never owned?

  • As much as I like Palmer's videos, I can't take another half hour of refuting VFX. The short version is the NT authors composed their text by referencing the OT, so of course its easy to find suggestive parallels between the two.

needless to say, nothing in patriarchal narratives can be considered historical.

  • Wooo, my neck hair stood when you read Isaac's sacrific with "E" alone. If I ever decide to read the bible again I'm going to try and pay close attention. It did seem there were other scriptures that seemed pasted together half-ass.

  • @AManOfHope The most glaring and obvious example is the story of Noah. 2 of every animal here, 7 of a few there...

  • Such a disgusting story. My son means more to me then any voice in my head. How the hell is this ever supposed to be a good story?

  • I thought VFX was admitted to a mental hospital suffering from mixed delusional disorder.

  • Thank you, I really dig your style, should you ever bring out a dvd I'd gladly buy that. I really regard your videos as entertaining with a very high production value.

So, again thanks a lot and a happy new year to you my friend :)

  • @nuckable That means a lot to me, considering I'm just making these on my computer in the basement in my spare time! I'm my own worst critic...Happy New Year to you, too!

  • Doesn't VFX know that there is no such thing as MACROcodes but only MICROcodes?

  • just one thing...

    יהוה

    not

    יתות

  • @brettpalmer You spoilsport! Using scholarly research, knowledge, scepticism and rationality to expose fanciful, fevered and imagined 'patterns' (the basis of ALL belief systems) in Shaun's videos is a kind of intellectual bullying, as the fight is so uneven! Thank you for your continued excellent work; I am really enjoying this series, and am so pleased that there are those, such as yourself, who bother to to take the time and effort to expose such peurile nonsense.

  • @derek24hudson Thank you! It's not a bother, really. I enjoy doing the work! I'm just pleased everyone's patient enough with me to stay subscribed and wait until I can get the next one out the door!

  • so according to the evidence male circumcision is just a replacement for human sacrifice. people can be so twisted.

  • Abraham married his half sister. Great "father of the faith"!

  • @brettppalmer could you point me to any more good books detailing the authorship of genesis. Especially chapters 1 and 2.

  • @animeforte369 Richard Friedman seems to be the godfather for us laymen. "Who Wrote the Bible" and "The Bible with Sources Revealed." But pretty much any scholarly work discusses it at some length. Just stay away from anything published out of Grand Rapids, MI. Might also check out "The Pentateuch" by Joseph Blenkinsopp. Good reading!

  • Hey Brett, what does it mean when it says "put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter"? (Gen 24:90)

I'm trying to think of a way this would translate into a modern oath-swearing, but hands under thighs is a foreign concept.

  • @ctastrophe should have said 24:9, not 24:90

  • @ctastrophe I find my NRSV Study Bible helpful for these sorts of things (translations into a more modern vernacular). It still has "under the thigh" but then explains, "...near the organs of procreation, signifying the solemnity of the oath that follows." If I wanted more, I'd compare a number of commentaries to get various scholarly views. It probably cannot be translated into an English idiom without losing some meaning. For example I doubt, "crossed his heart and hoped to die" would work! ;)

  • @brettppalmer Thanks Brett. So you think it's an idiom, and not a literal action like a "pat on the butt for good luck" kinda thing? What's the best way to go about getting scholarly views on stuff like this? I have 3 study bibles in different translations (not NRSV) and they don't seem to find anything of note in this verse. I actually came across this b/c I was almost sure that VFX uses the Defender's Study Bible, because as a former Hovind follower I know that Kent pimped this every seminar

  • How can PCS fail to notice that the "macro codes" he is talking about is a literary device called foreshadowing used only in fiction?

  • Re Jesus, Isaac and Ishmael: Jesus is God's only BEGOTTEN son. Isaac is Abraham's only BEGOTTEN son, since Ishmael was not conceived legitimately, between a husband and wife.

See, it all makes perfect sense!

(Don't look at the man behind the curtain.)

  • Fascinating and beautifully made. Being Jewish by birth, I expect Shaun thinks it is important to try to convince Jews that Jesus was the messiah.

  • @AuntieDiluvian You might like my conclusion. I briefly discuss the impact these "macrocodes" may have on Jewish people, and then compare what he's doing with a New Age reading of the New Testament to give him a dose of his own medicine!

  • There are Christians who think Bible codes are stupid. To them I say cheers!

On the other hand, I wish they'd get their retarded science hating brethren back in line. Sequestered quietly in a funny farm maybe.

  • One does not simply walk into Moriah

  • @itsjustameme They call the wind Moriah.

  • @itsjustameme Very good LOTR reference. +15

  • The wood rode in on a donkey! Jesus rode in on a donkey!

Jesus was therefore made of wood!

Turns out the druids were right, let's worship trees. It's right there, an obvious macrocode in the bible!

  • @thebigJ1er So he weighs the same as a duck? Or do we build a bridge out of him?

  • @rrward Ducks go on water, bridges go over water, Jesus walks on water....

    Think about it.

  • I love the Documentary Hypothesis! It would be so cool to have a "J" bible, an "E" bible, and a "D" bible (presumably "P" is what we already have) and be able to read these stories at each phase in their development.

  • @HebaruSan There is "The Book of J" by Harold Bloom...

  • @HebaruSan Unfortunately, then, its been been abandoned by most OT scholars.

  • @HebaruSan

    No love for R?

  • I'm starting to think that Venomfang kid doesn't really believe in god. I think he's trying to be one of those shills making a living peddling bullshit to the ignorant.

That is to say, he's not necessarily deluded, like all believers are, instead he's dishonest.

    Just a thought.

  • very much appreciate the time and care you put into researching this. VenomClownX could learn a thing or two from you about how to make a carefully reasoned and supported argument. He "could", but "would" is another matter altogether...he's probably too far gone. Looking forward to pt 3!

  • What's interesting about Lev 18:21 is that it only prohibits sacrificing one's child to Molech specifically, and is not a general prohibition. So it would seem one COULD sacrifice one's child to Yahweh/El

  • "After feeding the 20,000 Hebrew words of Genesis into a computer at Technion University in Israel, researchers found many sentences that ended in verbs and numerous words of six characters or more. Because these idiosyncratic patterns appear again and again, says project director Yehuda Radday, it seems likely that a sole author was responsible. Their exhaustive computer analysis conducted in Israel suggested an 82 percent probability that the book has just one author."

  • The horror of the bible is very evident with stories like this one about Isaac. Thanks for making VFX look silly,

  • @trailerfitter2 This video did not make VFX look silly, at least not as much as his own videos do.

  • Finding macrocodes in what was not written? Reminds me of something in "Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe": "I wish I had listened to what my mother said!" "What did she say?" "I don't know, I wasn't listening!"

  • Massive props to you, Brett, for stomaching so much of VFX's drivel without going berserk and blowing up your computer in a final fit of self preservation.

  • There's just so much wrong with Shawn's reading. Lambs were killed at Passover, but on the Day of Atonement, a bull and two goats were brought and slaughter. The high priest entering the Most Holy with the blood of the bull and one of the goats, the other being a "scape goat." Jesus, allegedly, was killed on the "Skull Place."

  • The priests were like political parties. The leader endorsed on group and they led the hearts and minds for that leader. One leader may hve ben a descendant of Isaac so the other group in one area tried to deligitimize him in favor of their guy. When war forced them together, the stories had to be made compatible. Just my opinion.

  • @8WholeThing Not just your opinion. Conquest and the following exile did bring the kingdoms of Judea and Israel together. The priest(s) needed a comprehensive history cobbled together to unite the northern and southern kingdoms during this time of adversity. And, voila: The books of "Moses".

  • He wont care that you made this video, he'll keep using these arguments

  • @lukeism2 Yes; however, hopefully there's a lurker or two out there who will have heard this rebuttal and reconsider these apologetics for what they really are. That's what happened to me; that's why I make these videos; maybe they will help break the bonds for someone else!

  • Comment removed

  • @lukeism2 I know. If only a good healthy bitchslap would help. But alas... I would still do it for the sake of it though.

  • Ooooh, burn!

  • Wasn't Jesus supposedly crucified on a Friday and supposedly rose on a Sunday? That isn't even 3 days...it's 2.

  • So god killed or nearly killed ton of people before offing himself in the form of jesus. He sounds a bit like a mad man who goes on a rampage before finally turning the gun on himself.

  • @MrShysterme Before faking his own death, you mean. They actually believe he's still alive, after all, and not in the Elvis Presley way.

  • @EdwardHowton Good point, makes it even more lame a story! That's what I don't get.....the religious believe god wrote a book but the book reads like a 3rd rate fantasy novel.

  • @MrShysterme 3rd rate? That's pushing it. If the bible were brought to a publisher today, they'd laugh you out of their office and burn the manuscript in their trashcan, in case it infects anything else that came in the door with Suck.

Practically half of Genesis alone is "And Guy begat Dude, and Dude begat Other Dude, and Other Dude begat..."

It doesn't even rate '8th-grade emo-twerp poetry'. It would be inferior to Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber's child (Bieber being the mom of course).

  • @EdwardHowton You're right, I was being generous. Hey bible, plot holes much?

  • Mt. Moriah does not encompass a large area in Jerusalem. He's never been there and the only history that he has an interest in is that which is depicted in the bible. Mt. Moriah is supposedly the area of the Temple Mount. And BP is totally correct that many of the locations mentioned in the old testament are not clearly known today...such as Mt. Sinai.

  • I simply find Shawn to be completely devoid of intellect and/or integrity. My assumption is that somewhere in his feeble pea of a brain, he actually thinks of jesus as a superhero, much like he wants to idea himself as.

  • Very informative (except for the parts by Shawn ; ) Particularly the idea that Isaac may have been sacrificed in one version of the story was completely new to me.

  • Ooooohhh....so god is like ovaltine corporation in the christmas story....neato....he makes codes an such instead of providing actual evidence of his existence.

  • Good job as allways and looking forward to part 3 but could you also put links to the other parts in the description box aswell when your video responses are split up into parts like this.

  • @9CrystalDragon2 Yes, I meant to do that but forgot! Thank you for the reminder!

  • You know the ironic part about this video? Even if the observations of VFX are absolutely 100% correct, that is proof of NOTHING. After all, is VFX claiming the writers of the Gospels did not KNOW the stories of the Old Testament? That they would not be influenced by these stories in writing down a messianic narrative?

  • @csaver Excellent point.

  • @csaver You will see me make this point in the conclusion due out next week!

  • @brettppalmer Looking forward to it!

  • Comment removed

  • @csaver Good point.

  • Wonder why Shawn chose Yosemite National Park as his background?

  • @WildwoodClaire1 - HA! Good catch.

He probably figured no one would notice.

  • @WildwoodClaire1 I figured it was because Yosemite is a vast wilderness unpopulated by people. It mirrors his mind, which is a vast wilderness unpopulated by good ideas.

  • Shawn reminds me of someone who believes in numerology, Nibiru, lizard people, 9-11 "truth," and Chemtrails.

  • This is a great series so far. Entertaining and interesting. I've known about the Documentary Hypothesis for a while but never the idea that Isaac was actually sacrificed, and later edited out.

  • We need to deport VFX to the USA.

  • So, you need macrocodes hidden in the text to figure out the Bible? Funny, seeing as how the Jews who wrote the Old Testament didn't believe in Jesus :)

  • I simply love how no matter how many times Sean comes back to spew his gold plated shit, some person like you, eloquent and motivated, pops up to show his crap for the bull feces that it is.

  • Aah, always good to see VFX debunked, and I must say: your voice makes it a soothing experience :-P

  • Great job :) loved this one

  • nice job =)
