@tamistamistamis Yes, there is a double pedal there. We switches his left foot between the hi hats' pedal, and the secondary bass drum pedal. In his DVD (The Language of Drumming - awesome, btw ) he uses this trick quite a few times.
If you check one of his famous drum solos , the one from his dvd ("Insane Groovy Solo" search it up) , you can see how he uses this ;)
@tamistamistamis i'm almost positive it's just a basic alternating 8th note pattern, just practice mobility with your left foot going back and forth from the hi hat to slave pedal, and you can also mess with the angles of your foot boards to play ostinatos where you split the hi hat pedal and slave pedal. here's a good example, this is my teacher playing L R R L R R L R R L RR with a split pedal. /watch?v=aIqgZE7BQaM
I checked the video of your teacher. Very cool. You got my point; a kind of ostinato with the feet and improv with hands on top of it.
I tried the Benny Greb's pattern on my own drum and I've come to realise that beside practice, what I need is also a good double-pedal (or at least, a well adjusted one regarding the spring...) When my left foot was closing the hi-hat, it had to come back to the slave pedal but at that moment, this pedal was not back in a "hitting position".
@Prof3ssrBrando It's just personal opinion, but for me, it just lacks some 'body', and it doesnt have a really defined stick attack either. Its just in between a crash and a ride, but it's really good at either, if you know what i mean :P
@tiekoe Right on, I hear ya! My friend recently got in one of them for his kit. He also has an extra dry Meinl ride 22". I think they make a great team for two high contrasted tones. Do you have a ride you're rockin' or prefer?
@Prof3ssrBrando Nice, those dry meinl's sound great. I personally use a K dark custom 22' ride, which sounds awesome. It is kind of hard to keep the volume under control though, i mostly use it as a crashride.
wuuuuf man.,., he is somewhere where no other drummer is .,., he is so genuine... amazing grooove.... he hits like a missile...... ryt in the chest...
Benny is my favourite all time drummer. As someone said here...I could listen to this guy grooving all day long without getting tired not for a single second. This guy is off the hook and insane. There are so many good drummers out there...in fact Vinnie is Vinnie...but this guy can groove your fucking ass as no other can. Period.
one of the few truly musical drummers out there, and i feel he does not get enough credit..while mike portnoy, with the least amout of soul ive ever seen a drummer play with recieves comments that say "hes the greatest of all time."
I mostly agree with what you say, though 1.Benny Greb's career is totally taking off atm and he already set a trend in the mainstream. 2. If you want to hear Mike Portnoy in soulful-mode, you'd better not watch the poser solo performances, it's more in the details (albums, side projects etc.)
@paulard666 jordin and barker are the only 2 overrated drummers in there, but yes i agree benny greb plays his drums as an instrument, not a rhythm machine.
i love this guy

From 5:50 to 9:15. I find this very very good.
What the feet does is real control.
I wonder exactly how he does that in fact...Is there any double pedal involved (from 5:50 to 9:00)?
Are the "triplets" on the bass drum really played with one foot?

@Alexgireis Thanks.
In fact I checked some other videos of him meanwhile and I saw what you're telling me.
I am amazed by this ostinato. I am really aiming to practice this kind of control and independance of my limb.

He's a great drummer, the only reason why some people think he's not good is that he's not a mainstream drummer...
