For those that can't get Pliny the Elder, but want something similar, get yourself some West Coast IPA from Green Flash. I think I actually prefer it over Pliny.
@pooscooper You lucky bastard lol. I'd love to score some of this and drink it along with some Bell's Hopslam. I've heard its better than Hopslam and it would take a lot for me to think that way, but I'd love to find out for myself someday.
@BeerGeekNation yo man how much does it go on the other coast? i live where they make it and i get to drink it whenever i want to =) but uh that younger is the the bombest brew ive ever had, russian river makes hella brews check em out. also lost blue moon harvest is mega....
ooooooh theres a myth now bro come down to cali get it fresh its not that exclusive ya also agree its a great beer had many nights of its awesomeness lol
this beer is absolutely one of my favorites, def my favorite ipa. still have one left def going to trade whatever i have to to get more for the holidays.
Do you think this beer is pronounced plinn-ee (small "i")? Someone said that we were pronouncing it wrong and after doing some research their is definitely a different pronunciation for the scholar's name, but I am more interested in what the people at the brewery called it. I just thought I'd ask you because you always seem to be on top of these things.
@AgileHProductions I have always heard the beer pronounced Pliney (like pine but with an "l" in there". The philosophers names is pronounced differently then the beer is. I have heard Vinnie from Russian River call it Pliney (like pine) so im going by that. Im actually going to be review this beer next Monday. I have a bottle that is 8 days old!! Figured it was time for a revisit.
I can have this beer everyday. With that said I think it still lives up to the hype because it still has never lost its mystique even for me. Just a great beer. I've tried more extreme flavors in beers that worked out perfectly and I liked better than Pliny. But there is still is no other beer that I would take over it if I had only one to have for the rest of my life. By the way Hop Stoopid tastes nothing like Pliny to me. But they do brew about 30 minutes away from each other.
Here in Philly suburb, just got 6 bottles from my cousin who lives in Northern CA for free. Awesome beer. It's really difficult to get bottles here in PA. Great review, I'll have to try Hopslam. I'll be trying it on tap next week.
Where do you live? I moved to Hatboro after living in Southern California my entire life, and now Wegmans in Warrington is my main place to get my beer fix. I'm going back to Cali to visit in about 3 months, and I'm planning on bringing back some Pliny and Alpine Duet...both tremendous DIPA's. Let me know if you're interested in me bringing back some goods that you can't get around here.
@dave1096 Im in Harrisburg. I actually used to live 5 mins from Hatboro, its where I grew up! Is love to get anything from Alpine and some fresh Pliny. This review is a year old and I would love to do a new review for it. My Skype name is csteltz or hit me up on the BGN facebook page at facebook/beergeeknation and we can chat. Cheers
Yeah I watched it on my phone, and didn't realize how old the vid was. Ive subscribed since then, and now im trying to catch up on all of them! Great reviews! In any case I'm from san Diego, so I can offer any bottled beers from here. I'll pm you to hash out the details.
@urbnmediumz The only one I have tried is their Nelson other then that I am not able to get them. Id be willing to trade. Let me know. Cheers. And be sure to check out some of my new reviews this one is about ayear old
I know a dude who homebrews a Pliny clone that is just as good or better than the real deal no bullshit. Fuck hunting this shit down, I hit my homey up for a sixer when he brews it up.
I finally got three bottles of this for about $13 apiece. Bottles were less than a month old. Frankly, it didn't blow me away at all. I enjoyed drinking it, but the experience was nowhere near what it felt like to drink Hopslam when it came out this year. When I got my first six-pack of that, I couldn't stop drinking it. I'm glad I had Pliny, but I'm not dying to drink it again. Maybe if I visit my cousins in CA one day, but I'm glad I can easily get Hopslam instead of Pliny where I live.
@BrokenGalaxy Yeah Pliny is a solid IPA but waaaay overrated. I think that Green Flash West Coast IPA is just as good if not better and I can get it fresh on the East Coast!
@bigsassyster What i'm saying is he poured it in no special way at all. It is half head ffs! If I was poured a beer like that in a pub I would be asking them to top it up straight away. However, you are American so I will let youo off for not knowing a lot about beer.
Yeah. That's about right. The store on my walk home has it for $4.18 (500mL). Blind Pig costs the same. I don't enjoy BP nearly as much as Pliny. For my money, it's Racer 5 and Pliny the Elder all the way.
@DoomMAn9 i AGREE 100%. I would never pay the same price for BP as I do for pliny. Well not that I can get it around me anyways but...it seems crazy that people would buy BP over Pliny.
I live in SF and just spent 4 years in southern Oregon and this beer was/is every where. They consistently had bottles of this stuff at both Shop-N-Kart and Market of Choice both of which are in Ashland Oregon. In Sanfran you can get this stuff on tap at Toronado for 4 dollars a pint, you can also go to Monks Kettle and pay 8 for a pint(screw you Monkys kettle and your elitist bullshit, yea u have a lot of beers but jeezus you charge a lot). I dont think its a 20 dollar beer btw.
I live near Philly, and Stephanie's Bar in doylestown has this on tap. I never have a problem with them running out, in fact, i'm the only one i know who constantly orders it. More for me I guess. It is expensive though.
Hey man, first off love your reviews I just found them about two weeks ago and been watching all of them. Been into craft beer for about 3 solid years now, and have to say your very detailed in your reviews which is great. I would love to do some beer trade with you if your ever in need of some CA goodies. I can get fresh pliny, lost abbey, port. Let me know if your interested, and keep up with the great reviews! Cheers
@tmcmanus916 NICE!! Im always looking for a good CA trader! Send me a private message if you want to set up a trade. Ive got a few beers out that way im looking for and I can get you the east coast goodies.
This isnt distributed to NY yet. Maybe some beer bars in NYC get it but its not readily available. i would consider The Elder a double and The Younger a triple.
Never had the younger though. i wish they would bottle it [as far as i understand its only available on tap]
Yeah you nailed it man its probably my #1 favorite of all time now.
@Chad9976 Vinny has said over and over that he does not want to increase production. And at this point he can barely keep up with the demand for Pliny The Elder now yet alone all of the other beers. So its gonna be a long time is we ever see bottle out our way :(
@BeerGeekNation Doesnt make sense from a business perspective, although that movie BEER WARS showed how success for the little guys is something of a doubled edged sword (you have to spend a lot of money to make a lot of money)
i live in SF and I know of several bars that have this on tap within walking distance from my apt.
