  • just downloaded this game along with FSO , dam its good espically when theres to Captial ships slugging each other off , or when you hear a beam cannon charging and your like "HOLY F£"%K", even the soudn effect in this game sound great.

  • Damn.. if Youtube was available back then, FS2's trailers and footage would blow everyone's mind off and it wouldn't suffer such bad sale figures thanks no other than Interplay.

  • @rockogambi i have the gog version but when i try to play it says "freespace 2 has stopped working" :( any ideas? freespace 1 plays fine

  • @dageezerboi

Sorry, It's been ages since I played that. And I recall I had some problem as well.

  • @rockogambi its ok I got it working, had to install a 10gb file though...

  • 2nd best game ever for me!

  • Comment removed

  • Thumbs up if you want Freespace 3 to pick up where this damn good game left off!

  • my fav ship was always the hercules bomber

  • @thestabbingchannel hercules is a fighter

  • correction, herculies Heavy fighter, yeah its a classic space ship design

  • Wow space has an atmosphere. Lol xD !!!!

  • Its funny how fuel rockets work in space XD !!!

  • Anyone know if this works on Windows 7? I got an old computer if it doesn't, but I need to update the graphics card. I has an ATI Radeon Rage 2000.

  • It's easy to see why I thought Freespace 2 was humanity's greatest achievement back in 1999,

  • After more than 10 year......this AWESOME GAME runs even on Windows 7!!!! :-P This game is THAT impressive! :-)

  • Pure poetry, this game is art built by the gods.

  • Seeing the destroyer still floating up there after 32 years sends a shiver up my spine.

  • I remember this game. It is definitely one of the vest games I have ever played.

To anyone who hasn't played this, go on EBay and get yourself s copy.

  • Those are very durable spacesuit and batteries!

  • I would watch this every time I started the game. What an epic intro. Such good memories!!

  • @grijam02 One could write a BOOK of that intro: We see the 3 Bombers heading for the Shivan Capital Ship. One Bomber gets hit. Pilot 1: "Oh, no! We've lost Beta 2!" Pilot 2:"Stay on Target!" Right when they are within reach to launch their missles, one HUGE beam destroys both remaining Bombers. This powerful beam forces it's way into the GTVA Capital Ship, killing those onboard. Trivia: The corpse holding the (fading) hologram of his beloved wife is the Pilot who was shot down by the Shivan.

  • @TzeffNL If only!!

  • This game is one of the best games in history, way ahead of its time, I prefer it to the X series

  • @VaultBoy96

yes, X universe not for everyone .you must think , not only shoot shoot shoot ..next mission and repeat :P

  • ...and now we live in the mausoleum of history... It is a shame that this epic game was a commercial disaster. Thank you, Volition, for creating this masterpiece.

  • @Been2Hell I'm so sorry, I meant to thumb this up. I've sought after this game for years. It's flipping amazing.

  • Lol. This games open source now, you can download it for free. Large modding community.

  • You'd think that they would salvage that Orion wreck for the metal.

  • 2:45 GTI Hades crash site.

  • @MtnMaiden When i 1st saw it i never knew what it was, but then i bought the expansion for the 1st game and it all came to me :D

  • I'll help you save money. You only have to buy Freespace 2, because there is a mod that puts all the Freespace 1 missions into the Freespace 2 engine!

  • That intro still gives me the shivers after so many years...!

  • GOG.com rocks, many many classic games for sale under $10 on the site.

  • tis was my first game on pc still love it can any one tell me where i can download it ?

  • @RachidK22 GOG.com. For under $5, too!

  • I played the demo a few times years ago and it was great but unfortunatly never picked it up. Lo and behold, i find out about GOG and i got it a few hours ago. GREAT game!

  • Even after all these years the scream of the Shivan ships still makes me shiver with dread.

  • Freelancer is better?

  • This is, by far, the best game in history! I think I completed it like 10 times...

  • Pretty much the best game ever.

  • i have just dug out my old freespace 2 3 disk set, the old games do look and run great on new kit.

  • Beyonce might has one of da best videos of all teim... but Freespace 2 IS the best game of all time.

  • @iAreRobb 0o actually that would be Earth and Beyond .... FreeSpace franchise had the potential to be the best ... but the opted little in the way of configs , or getting intimate with your ship , one day someone will make the sim with quality of all counterparts , then pwnage 2 allz in frontz of themz

  • @hoppermantis Im kindof hoping for a new era of spacesims. Considering the graphics availability of today even the lowest end GFx cards could provide with an amazing experience. You got any sims similar to Freespace2 btw?

  • @iAreRobb

I'm more partial towards [ **scope/ of = Eath and Beyond , (emulator running a server found at Net7.org easy to instal and plenty on-line) ] [**Feel/gameplay/dialog of campaign = Tachyon: the fringe.] [**dialog of missions and AI/Configs(still needing more choices and admendable components but great idea even could be similar to StarSiege config setup would ROCK) of =FreeLancer]

  • The Only game i have bought 2 times in my Life. Its so intensive, so big, so wundervoll.

  • gog.com hates anything with 2 right now. haha

  • Everyone see Volition finally announced they "would murder" to make a FS3? Everyone needs to get behind them.

  • @EuphoricDan Well lets collect thumbs ups and start a club that will email and get votes for fs3 hows that

  • @DIVOTMOVIES

I'm game, where do we start?

  • @EuphoricDan We just start, mabey by banding together and making a freespace acount, i guess

  • @DIVOTMOVIES by the way it all starts with we would help volition "murder" to make fs3-----------------------------thumbs up if you agree

  • @DIVOTMOVIES It doesn't work that way...:-\

  • @EuphoricDan That's nice to hear, but there are LEGAL issues tied to the rights of making FreeSpace 3. Interplay OWN those rights. (Votlion sold them...and felt sorry about it!) So now it's up to Interplay to decide to allow Volition to make FreeSpace 3. But don't hold your breath. After many years of guessing, Interplay said: "There WON'T be any FreeSpace 3...EVER!" Sounds like they really HATE Freespace because of the unrewarding sales after finacing it for a LOT of money...:-s

  • @TzeffNL What complicates things even more is that Volition was sold to THQ. So it's actually up to THQ to buy the rights of the FreeSpace series...

  • @TzeffNL

well then sounds like they'd have to create another universe :S

  • Comment removed

  • @Kamfrenchie I wouldn't mind if the SAME developers create another universe, as long as these SAME developers manage to give us the same "feel" of FreeSpace 2! So, HUGE capitalships, long and deadly laser beams but with fighters that behave like in real space this time. Example spin your fighter 180 degrees around it's axis, while it's still moving in the same vector. (so you're now moving "backwards!) With this we could perform "slides" (strafing) too! Ofcourse we can't have GTVA vs Shivans...

  • @TzeffNL

that would be kinda risky imo. Freespace 1 and 2 are kinda arcade space sim (although you do need skill), and a realistic behaviour could turn off some of the audience. Though for that kind of realistic physic, there is independance war, and i think there are also some mods of freespace 2 that include it.

  • @EuphoricDan If Volition wants to make Freespace 3, they'll have to BUY BACK the rights!

  • @TzeffNL alrite so Volition cant make a sequel - but then why can't the @$*%# who HAVE the rights (whoever they are) make a sequel?

  • @schwarzfalk As I wrote earlier: INTERPLAY owns the rights of this awesome game. But Interplay REFUSES to make a sequel, because the DISAPPOINTING sales...which was INTERPLAY's own fault! FreeSpace 2 sold bad because Interplay didn't promote it! Bastards!

  • @schwarzfalk THQ is the ONLY HOPE of buying the rights of FreeSpace 2 and create a sequel. Problem...THQ is going bacrupt...:-(

  • @TzeffNL "THQ is the only hope of buying the rights"?

but that means THQ dont own the rights either. so WHO owns the rights atm?

  • @schwarzfalk INTERPLAY!

  • @TzeffNL alrite, so: why the hell wont these Interplay @$%# make a sequel???

  • @schwarzfalk Why are you asking questions I have already answered? Please read ALL my replies to you! I have already told you WHO has the rights and WHY they won't make a sequel....

  • @TzeffNL shit crappy utube didn't show ur post about the sales part (only appear now)

ok ok but that dont make sense, I thought MANY copies were sold (very popular game, so if it's popular then it means many sales, plus no piracy at that time to reduce sales anyway) so they gotta be lying about that

    they deserve some hatemail

  • @schwarzfalk The sales figures don't lie. Check on Wikipedia about Freespace 2! The game was NOT popular. Millions of people NEVER heard about it! (including me!) Because INTERPLAY didn't promote FreeSpace 2 by making commercials and spreading news about it! I've heard about FreeSpace 2 ONLY by reading about it in the game reviews! The reviewers said FreeSpace 2 was "probably the best space combat shooter". So that's when I've tested the demo. And man! What an impression that demo made on me!

  • @schwarzfalk @schwarzfalk Freespace 2 sold only 27 Thousend games in the first 6 months Thats not good. Especially for a game that got very good critics and hoards of awards and is the pinnacle of its genre.

Some times I think because this game failed at sales it was the end of the mission based space shooter.

  • @EuphoricDan Well what are we waiting for?

  • @EuphoricDan I get worried games have been to watered down for the masses, if they finally make the game (I'd freak out) and then flame all the masses that don't understand it

  • war never changes...

  • @megafio War... has changed.

  • I just thought of something.

How is that pilot able to have climbed out of the cockpit, presuming that the Herc crashlanded like that? I'm assuming the same pilot of the Herc is the one lying against it.

  • @Eltrotraw Theres two pilots in a Herc maybe one ejected and broke he legs on impact amd died on starveation :) Ue your imangination ;D

  • 2:52 lol, there's the Hades from the Silent Threat expansion.

  • freespace 1 rocks, it is one of my infinite favorite games, but i just recently found out that there is a sequel! i guess i'll be getting this game asap.

  • still one of the best intros to any videogame ever, nothing has come close to how powerful that monologue is

  • This into,man......I get and adrenaline rush just watching it again.

  • arent they making any,ore games like this?? i loved this 1 still do :)

  • @RASAlexander Sadly, No. They got about 1/4 of the way through freespace 3 before the video game market turned more towards FPS, and the project was dropped.

  • it's too bad that developers only seem interested in generic first person shooters and nothing else these days...

  • What did he say when he says "they say we have no present... only a past feel with [WHAT]... and a future we can only dream of..."

What is the missing word ? Arts ? War ?

    Thanks.

  • "They say we have no present... only past, filled with horror... and a future, that we can only dream of."

  • @menorche Thank you both :)

  • @koopanique Horror

  • I am the last star fighter

  • @TheReddwarff100 see, thats exactly what im looking for in a new space combat simulator, i liked the 'speed' of free-lancer actually.. but if the control systems are as complicated, and there are plenty of complicated operations ill dig it for sure, seat of th epants flight is good. my favorite was tie-figter or xwing alliance.. every key on the keyboard bound to a different ships operations.. mix those 2 games and id be stuck forever.

  • isnt this an internet playable game?

  • @mariomix111 no, u gotta buy the disk for PC.

  • @randomduuuuude no, u gotta buy it form gog.com

  • The music in this game is amazing.

  • the great war, refer to the "coalition against the alliance" in freelancer?, because, in both games it is the "23'rd century":D

  • @daemonsky95:

The Great War was the conflict that took place right after the Terran-Vasudan War. It was the first encounter with the Shivan's. Freespace has nothing to do with Freelancer.

  • Prefiro jogar freelancer em português no Mod freelancer lost 6.66

  • 4:22 - "They say our people have no present...only a past filled with horror...and a future they can only dream of..." - I LOVE ThAT LINE it's sooo epic!

  • Freespace 2 is my favourite game of all time! Beautiful graphics, dramatic story, absolutely perfect gameplay. Criminally, never got the sales recognition it deserved, but I'm gonna build myself a new PC so I can replay it and get into the open source projects supporting it. Dive, dive, dive!

  • @InAnotherUniverse1 opensource projects whats that mean?

  • 02:22 Manticore Fighter: PELVIC THRUST!

  • Does anyone here know the system requirements for this bad-ass game (amount of RAM, processor type, graphics card, etc)? I gotta get this!!! I have Tachyon, but this looks pretty damn good!!

  • @celticbattleaxe

it's qite a old game, I don't think you'll have any trouble running it unless your cop is really old.

  • @Kamfrenchie Thanks!! Do you know the system requirements? I have a (pitiful) 933Mhz Pentium III processor, 512 MB of RAM, an ATI Radeon Rage 2000 graphics card - I might be ok, but I just want to be sure.

  • @celticbattleaxe from what I saw on gamespot site you can run it well and have no excuse for not playing it :p But check it just in case: minimum System: Pentium-200 or equivalent RAM: 32 MB Video Memory: 8 MB Hard Drive Space: 400 MB recommended System: PII 266 or equivalent RAM: 64 MB Most video games website should have an option showing you the requirement if you want to be sure.
  • @Kamfrenchie THANKYOU!!!! I've got to get this!!! :):):):

You made my day!!!! No, my YEAR!!!!

My computer, as old as it is(it still has the OLD Iomega zip-drives in it :) ) can run it then!!!! THANKYOU times a million!!!!! :):):):):):):)

  • @celticbattleaxe

    so is it working fine?

  • @Kamfrenchie Yep!!!!!!!!!! :):):):):):):):):)

  • @celticbattleaxe its old as shit it will work. the first freespace is better

  • @GodsNotReal95 yeah ok we got it, you like fs1 better. I don't ;)

  • @GodsNotReal95

No that is so wrong is just amazing.

  • @celticbattleaxe it doesn't require much.. its old...

  • I have played Xwing vs Tie fighter, Colony wars 1-3 and Wing commander 3. Does anyone think this game is as good as those are? Because i LOVED those.

  • @Galimah If you loved those games then could Freespace blow your mind. Play it buddy and then you will SEE, FEEL and UNDERSTAND why this game is considered to be THE BEST space sim on earth in games history.

  • @Galimah Definitely as good.

  • @Galimah

This is the best of the best.

It's worth buying a really nice joystick to play this game.

I use an Attack 3 logitech joystick.

Was around 40 quid well worth it though.

  • Loved these games since i was a kid. If you're just trying it now try the Blue Planet mods after you finish the campaign. They're one of the mods that picks up after Freespace 2 leaves off and has missions that are a downright joy to play through. War in Heaven Part 1 is especially mind blowing.

  • You can buy this game or the prequel for US $6 apiece from gog dot com, the home for good old games.

  • @SapphireAegis Wow! Thanks for sharing. I'd never heard of Good Old Games.

  • @SapphireAegis I saw them bundled together for $10 at walmart a few years back.

  • @SapphireAegis Or..... Go to thepiratebay. DUH

  • @alphaXbeta6

the game is worth the money

  • @SapphireAegis I wish I had known sooner, I spent a lot of money on this...

  • @SapphireAegis or you can torrent it for free just saying

  • @diehard951 , when u go to a starbucks you pay 6 dollars for a lousy cup of cafe late.... so why not buying such a good game ?

  • @SapphireAegis

    its Freeware by now!

  • @2ane

    it isn't freeware

  • @2ane It's not freeware. It's also been upgraded by an extensive modding community.

  • I am playing Free-space 1 and 2 right now for the first time. I am amazed at how good it is...AWESOME GAME!

  • i saw this game at amazon for almost $100 dollars. There goes my hope for playing this game.

  • @moiriv415

So download it for free - freefunfilesdotcom

  • @moiriv415 Good old games, sir. GOG.com

    Thank me later.

  • this game is fuckin awesome, i miss free space 2 :/

but honestly, i didnt like the ending :(

  • so cool thanks :)

  • good times...with my old old windows 98..

  • awesome, awesome video. So few games actually have meaningful introduction videos; or any introduction videos at all.

  • That music is fantastic.

  • i loved this game as a kid... finsihed it twice an started a 3rd before my comp crashed... but one thing i always liked: Bosch. in reality, he wasnt such a bad guy.... he was realistic. terrorism and dissent is sometimes the way to your goal when u have no viable other.

  • i have 15 years old and i play at least 2 times year since i was 6..my dad play it since it created :) same as descent I ,II,III and fs 1 :)

  • This introduction isn't as good as the original, but it set the scene really well for the entire game... man I wish that the vapourware third game had been made by Volition.

  • interplay made the original fallout 1 and 2,

i kinda wanna play this game

  • wow. i've played this game since i was 7. I called it "shooter game," and it was definitely my favorite. i am trying to get the freeware version of fs2, but i have dial up "noooooo!!!!!". i still play this game. by the way, buyer beware, i accidentally bought "freespace, darkness rising," thinking its an expansion pack. it isn't. its a demo, so don't be fooled by it.

  • I really hope they can make freespace 3 possible, or at least a re-make of the classic games, it would be nice to flying around in space with a unreal 3 level graphic.

  • This game was awsome! The graphics are nothing special these days ofcourse, but at it's release, it was far ahead of it's time, and is still fun to play nowadays. For some reason this game got mediocre reviews and didn't get too popular. No other space sim has matched the musical score and the intrigueing sci-fi story line IMO.

  • @MetalSlugzMaster Mediocre reviews? Wherever I've looked its consistently got 9/10 Its also won loads of GOTY awards for Simulators

  • Ughhh I've played this game over so many times, and also with the fsopen project which makes it seam as if the game was a recent release with all the graphical upgrades and what not, but I hope one day that a Freespace 3 gets made, but at the same time I don't because there is probably a good chance that it will be ruined like most games that have lost their original creators and are picked up by new companies and ruined like the C&C series in which the latest installment C&C 4 was a train-wreck

  • @deathrow989

I think your spot on there, I see within many old games that they are not just made, bang there's a game lets sell it. But a caring, almost loving attention to the game, that I feel really lacks with many of todays new realises.

I doubt that whoever makes freespace 3 (if ever) will give it the care and attention that the original creators gave to freespace 2.

  • I remember stories of a glorious civilization,

Of cities with spires that reached the sun,

Of a blue planet with vast seas,

Of people with myths of humanity everlasting,

Of children who saw in the embers of dying stars,

    The destiny of their race.

One of the best games in the space-sim genre ever made, and a fantastic intro.

  • my fav game then and stilll is.

greetz to all who played online in the good old days from RA-Dylan McQuinn

  • is there a multiplayer??? for this game??

  • @r4jk3

there was, via parallax online, and it was fuckin EPIC.

too bad interplay was a shit company and killed this game.

  • I love the smell of burnt shivan in the morning.

  • My real name is after this master piece.

  • Poor Legion.

  • would be nice if there were a new freespace every 10 years....as it stands now it looks like there may never be a freespace 3 still it would be cool if there were a new freespace with next gen graphics

  • funny my real name is BASTION.

  • I had used the Amiga for 10 years from 1990 till the year 2000 when i moved over to the PC after being Anti PC for so damn long! This was one of THE first PC games i ever owned and it BLEW ME AWAY!!! ... What better introduction to PC gaming that this one :)

  • Comment removed

  • A masterpiece intro to a masterpiece game, this is truly one for the ages.

  • I was just looking around, started to look at Decent, and just remember I used to play this game, omg it brings back so many memories, 10 years ago... I was 8 and i used to play this so much

  • OMG It's 11 years old, time flies.

I miss the space comabat SIMS

  • WELL how many of u have played eve online..???.. wish it was a single player game.. though in some way. the stories in eve are just totaly cult epic... height of space sims in todays date... no other space sim has been able to even come close to the gameplay, the basic storyline, side stories, characters or even the graphics of eve online till now... its like the ' LOST ' of space sims.. lols .. wat do u guys think ???

  • Comment removed

  • This has probably got to be one of the best games I have ever played in my life... 5/5!!!

  • The narrator sounds like the guy from Future Weapons.

"This... is the 50.. BMG round...."

  • Top list of Spacegames i respect:

    1 Freespace

    2 Freespace 2

    3 Independence War

4 Vega Strike ( Because it give me that oldskool feeling back these 3 games above have given me: That anything can happen once you are in space: And i love them for just that)

  • @Artmarqy How is Independence War? I played it once as a kid, but it was too complicated for me and I was not used to Newtonian physics.

  • Comment removed

  • @NInjai555 NInjai555 heya: Well the big difference between Freespace (1&2) and Iwar when it comes to flying your space ship: With Freespace you pretty much can autolock the speed when chasing the enemy in a dogfight. But Iwar has more of a realistic aproich in space and uses glide techniques and full 360 rotation around its base to position yourself to a enemy. You have to do it a few times to get a hang of it in truth, but once you do..its awsom! Put a good story line to it aswel: Its a winner!

  • @Artmarqy Thanks, I'll play it some day, right now I'm working on Freespace fan campaigns.
