@sharinganWS no, he introduced japanese jiu jitsu, and the gracies modified it and created brazilian jiu jitsu. The father of bjj is carlos or heli gracie.
@iGreekSalad Actually he introduce Kano Jiutsu as it was known then or Judo as it's known now and they adapted that. That was when all the techniques you can do in BJJ you could do in Judo.
@hypekillacsplaya Of course he could, Rorion is 9th degree black belt because he is the older brother, not because of his skill. In fact, he may be the weakest known son from Helio. Royce is better then him, Rickson is MUCH better then him, even rorion would admit that rickson is miles away from him, and royler, well, he is a light guy so I don't know, but weight is the only thing rorion got on royler, skill wise royler is one of the best.
Rickson is the most TECHNICAL expression of jiu jitsu EVER.He's an amazing technician, and such an inspirational jiu jitsu stylist.Thank you 4 posting the video.
I never really got to see any footage of him in grappling competitions but I know a lot of other grapplers have said he had one of the best grappling pedigrees ever.
@sharinganWS Mitsuyo maeda didnt invent brazillian jujitu, he taught helio an carlos gracie Judo. It was the lack of physical strength that helio an his bruda carlos modified it so it was easier for someone smaller like them to beat a bigger guy. Maeda called it jujitsu cause the gracie alterd the judo moves so much he didnt recognize it as judo anymore.
Rickson is going easy on them to teach them... the only way you get better in jj is by rolling with guys that are better than you. You can see there is a lot of mutual respect between the teacher and his students. I wish I could roll with him or watch him roll in real life, it would be an amazing experience, even though he would tap me every time.
dude these guys didn't know anything at this time, they were definitely trying, when your confident in jiujitsu you can just relax and flow like that.
fuck yeah they did, even if one of those guys was a black belt , they were just trying to be cool, if they went all out, and like got a lucky sweep or sub , then he would probably choke them unconcious or break a limb. or renzo gracie might jump in and just kick you in the face. thats how they roll.
while i'm sure none of tese guys could come close to beating Rickson I feel many of them were too passive for fear of being disrespectfulI would figure. If I'm rolling I'm going al out to see what I really have against one of the best ever.
Everyone has they´re opinion and thats fine. This man is a master of his craft. If anyone here including myself taps this guy in jiujitsu or grappling, let me know.I for 1 was at a seminar in tampa in march of 1996 and it was humbling. He made me love jiujitsu!I got my ass handed to me,I have been training ever since and I am sure he could do the same thing he did when I didnt know shit to present day!lolAs far as mma,It would not be good for him with present day competition.

And Mike Tyson said he learned how to first fight on the streets, sounds like he wasn't so bad after all.
Well, I am not saying Rickson would not have a chance against Tyson who is just a boxer. But then again Rickson would have had a good chance of getting knocked out by Tyson as well. But alot of people challenge Tyson. Tyson was making millions fighting and well fighting for free or chump change with Rickson does not make sense. I dont blame him. I am sure he was not scared. You should never assume that. Sakuraba challenged Rickson and he said he would not do it for less then a million.
lol when mike tyson was at his peak where he fight.... usa rickson at his peak at same time where he fight...? WORLD WIDE! mike tyson is chump change! oh yea rickson is #1 freestyle fight in the world. mike tyson is a dumbass that beats up 70 year old women, takes their wallet and runs away. Rickson was not world wide! Maybe Brazillian wide! LOL! Yes Tyson is a meat head, but that does not mean Rickson could beat him. Royce was the one who came and proved himself in my opinion.

@mule1783 no. you are stupid. if the grip mattered so much then how the fuck to you explain JJ machado, and for 2 i can tell you have never in your life rolled with and or without mma gloves, or fought in a cage and a street fight, those fucking gloves make no difference, and even if it did there are a million different glove types, and if they used no gloves the grapplers would get knocked out easier, and on top of all of this mma isnt about striking , its about all the disciplines idiot.
@matwizard obviously your the one who hasnt fought in MMA... fighting with gloves is way different... grappling with gloves is alot hard. and if they dont wear gloves they will NOT get knocke dout easier... you can hit harder with glvoes, cause you dont have to worry about breaking your hand.
@PornoRobbie m8 rickson isnt a 9th degree he has a red and black belt he is a 8th degree m8 rorion is the only one of the sons with a 9th degree red belt right now
Lol @ all the fucktards bitching that hes rolling with white belts. He's giving a fucking seminar you fucks and its obvious as shit hes not trying at all, he is just demonstrating the effectiveness of bjj.
Armlock. Rickson has used this technique forever. It's applied when you're in a "turtle" position and the opponent hugs from a north/south position, or from the side (where you'd attempt a clock choke, crucifix or to take the back). Simple but effective. That's Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Not quite an Americana. He's used this a lot. I've watched him catch guy after guy with it in person. It's the same grip as an Americana but the leverage is on the elbow, not the shoulder. Basically the same lock you could catch if you applied an Americana and straightened your arm. Like I said, it's simple but it works very well. I've used it since I saw him catch it in '96. Very simple but beautiful.
Watch the video on here "Pure Technique" 2/3 filmed in 1994 in Chicago. At around 2:10 (coincidentally) he catches a variation of the same armlock from a better angle.
I love how he sets a move up. He rolls around with the opponent trying to "fool" them and setting them up to move into a favorable position to attack. At 2:56 you can see the classic armbar. He is the best at setting an opponent up. A middleweight match-up of the century would be Rickson Gracie v. Anderson Silva. Hey, if "The Natural" can fight at a high level at his age, then why not Rickson? What the hell, it's good to dream right??? LOL!!!
As great as Rickson is, one thing will always taint his reputation + legacy: activity (or lackof at the highest level).
Why isn't he going at it with the best of the submission grappling world at ADCC. Jacare-Rickson, we wanna see it! lol.
And it is disrespectful how he degrades the accomplishments and abilities of MMA fighters such as Fedor & Nogueira without having proven shit himself in the MODERN mma sphere.
How did he lack activity? He won numerous grappling and submission tournaments throughout the 80's and 90's. Also, throughout the 90's he dominated the MMA and Vale Tudo world. He was arguably solely responsible for the birth and success of Pride and the explosion of MMA popularity in Japan. Of course he's not going to go back to ADCC and face Jacare, he's almost 50 years old! You may as well say Mark Spitz isn't active enough to be considered great and he should challenge Phelps.
Did not realize that he was 49.. thought he was 39!
Regardless, the way he degrades the accomplishments of MMA fighters is extremely disrespectful and unprecedented for a man of his genuine stature!
Dominated the MMA and Value Tudo world? Mate, when he dominated the world of organized full-contact-fighting, which he never did, there wasn't a such thing as MMA.. it was still pretty much 1-D! Early days...
watch punch man. doco on utube. the quality of fighters is up there with todays ufc i rekon. not quite as pollished or well rounded but what they did they did amzingly wrell and would still give the top guys today a run for their moneuy. rickson mite even win
It went very well. It was an open class so everyone already knew the basics so I was pretty much swimming with sharks but I got in there anyway. Rolled with the 3rd degree black belt instructor and got a very good intro to bjj. I am hooked and look forward to joining the school. Did I mention I puked about a half gallon of water up after I was done? Yea. N00b sauce. Thanks for asking!
hahaha same thing happened to me during my first class i just puked my dinner up!! I'm good now though and getting much fitter!! Keep up the good work buddy i love jiu jitsu!!
You should probably leave this where its at Erick, disrespecting people often leads to this place we've arrived at. Better to have peace than a loud voice
Does it matter? I appreciate that fact that the guy is very good and a superb Martial Artist and I think a very nice guy comparing him with new guys is like comparing Mohammed Ali with the current champ (who ever that is) it doesn't gain anything just my 50p

He recently stated that he could easily defeat Fedor...he will not back.
Bas Rutten challenged him a while back, but he never fought him either. He seems like a turd.

i think he meant at pure bjj. and i wouldn't put it past him. dude tooled royler.

Thats it Rickson, go and submit white belts and people who never trained ground fighting, and then add those rolls as victories. What a class act

rickyhurtado 3 years ago
anyone have any idea what technique made the guy tap at 2:10? I can't figure it out
LordBwithU 3 years ago
Armlock. Rickson has used this technique forever. It's applied when you're in a "turtle" position and the opponent hugs from a north/south position, or from the side (where you'd attempt a clock choke, crucifix or to take the back). Simple but effective. That's Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
sendergreen 3 years ago
you didnt say what kind of armlock
it's actually an americana that should be used from side control but Ricson used it from there.
kgbheadlock 3 years ago
Not quite an Americana. He's used this a lot. I've watched him catch guy after guy with it in person. It's the same grip as an Americana but the leverage is on the elbow, not the shoulder. Basically the same lock you could catch if you applied an Americana and straightened your arm. Like I said, it's simple but it works very well. I've used it since I saw him catch it in '96. Very simple but beautiful.
sendergreen 3 years ago
so grab the wrist with your left hand and grab your own bicep with the right hand and lift?
kgbheadlock 3 years ago
Watch the video on here "Pure Technique" 2/3 filmed in 1994 in Chicago. At around 2:10 (coincidentally) he catches a variation of the same armlock from a better angle.
sendergreen 3 years ago
I love how he sets a move up. He rolls around with the opponent trying to "fool" them and setting them up to move into a favorable position to attack. At 2:56 you can see the classic armbar. He is the best at setting an opponent up. A middleweight match-up of the century would be Rickson Gracie v. Anderson Silva. Hey, if "The Natural" can fight at a high level at his age, then why not Rickson? What the hell, it's good to dream right??? LOL!!!

He is unbeatable :P
Those students suck, they have no idea what they are doing...
But he is still unbeatable! :D
Kakabeblen 3 years ago
yes, unbeatable against cans and people who suck at ground fighting. Had he beat anyone worth shit I would have a different opinion.

Still, he IS the best Gracie :).
homegrownhero 3 years ago
How did he lack activity? He won numerous grappling and submission tournaments throughout the 80's and 90's. Also, throughout the 90's he dominated the MMA and Vale Tudo world. He was arguably solely responsible for the birth and success of Pride and the explosion of MMA popularity in Japan. Of course he's not going to go back to ADCC and face Jacare, he's almost 50 years old! You may as well say Mark Spitz isn't active enough to be considered great and he should challenge Phelps.
strokerman01 3 years ago
Did not realize that he was 49.. thought he was 39!
Regardless, the way he degrades the accomplishments of MMA fighters is extremely disrespectful and unprecedented for a man of his genuine stature!
Dominated the MMA and Value Tudo world? Mate, when he dominated the world of organized full-contact-fighting, which he never did, there wasn't a such thing as MMA.. it was still pretty much 1-D! Early days...
Pride- yes, agree.. vs Takada set it all off.
Read my 1st post again, MODERN MMA sphere?

How did it go?
AberrantBJJ 3 years ago
It went very well. It was an open class so everyone already knew the basics so I was pretty much swimming with sharks but I got in there anyway. Rolled with the 3rd degree black belt instructor and got a very good intro to bjj. I am hooked and look forward to joining the school. Did I mention I puked about a half gallon of water up after I was done? Yea. N00b sauce. Thanks for asking!

hahaha same thing happened to me during my first class i just puked my dinner up!! I'm good now though and getting much fitter!! Keep up the good work buddy i love jiu jitsu!!

Does it matter? I appreciate that fact that the guy is very good and a superb Martial Artist and I think a very nice guy comparing him with new guys is like comparing Mohammed Ali with the current champ (who ever that is) it doesn't gain anything just my 50p
