@shova213 The legend says that a Warrior monk of the shaolin temple (Luohan) was caught drinking. This being against the rules of the temple, he was exiled. He then trained, with the purpose of being able to fight while drunk, and returned after some time.
The 4 guards at the entrance of the temple stopped him, these guards also being fighting monks. They were all beaten by a drunken monk, and so he trained in the temple once more. when taught, soberly used though.
@Shikagray You find me a guy that can keep his focus heavily intoxicated, and I'll show you the best Zui Quan master ever.
Unfortunately, alcohol has this annoying ability to destroy your motor skills, not improve them. It's impossible to become "better" at Drunken Boxing while you're actually drunk.
Fortunately, you'll feel no pain till tomorrow morning after getting your ass kicked cuz you actually attempted Zui Quan drunk.
I look like that when im going home from a party :P But seriously thats by far the best looking martial art i've seen soo far. Shame that there isnt any M.A School that teach this style in my city. You can make fun from a guy fighting with a person who fight with Zui Quan style. They can say "see! You cant even hit that drunk dude!" :P
What's with the racism? I'm white and I'm learning Drunken Boxing, and have been for about a year. I understand it just fine.
It's not really a race/gender/body type thing... I would have to say, while on that note, anyone who says "_____ can't understand this" ... probably doesn't and/or can't understand it themselves.
i don't care about guns and i am a wushu kung fu student. If we gonna think negative way we will said a gun could kill him well why don't everybody stop martial arts/boxing/mma.... and just handle a gun. Not every time you will have a gun on you. Well maybe the gun could kill him but the positive things is that those master have a very good health and i doubt that you could hit him with a gun he is so fast. And for the one that said those strike do not hurt have you ever tried them ;)
said white guy can't take for granted most fights you'll be in won't happen in a ring and won't last more than a moment. if it's not in MMA on cable, it's not useful. not saying this is/is not a useful fighting technique, however it is very beautiful to see the forms and offers interesting ideas in terms of fade-away striking.
lol I think Jackie Chan did better than this guy. ;) Still a great example. I really enjoyed it. It seems to me that only the fighter of this style knows where he's going. Quite dangerous if you have an opponent like this whose movements seem quite uncoordinated (from a spectator's view that is). It's easier to loose if you can't read your opponent's next move.
Really? We're having this argument? You want to win a fight. . use a gun. You want to practice martial arts and better yourself. . this is as good as any. That's the gist of it.
Though in self defense, a person trained in martial arts will persevere more often than not if the other person does not have a gun.
drunken style fools your opponent, and leaves him shamed within the first moments of the fight, he then has to get back into his 'groove' before being at the top of his game... and thats not likely to happen if you just got your ass wooped by some drunk bum =P
No fuckin' shit sherlock, this Royce Gracie is a master and what, this guy is a student. No shit he could whup his ass. Or maybe, the student could even kick his ass. It always depends on the person.

@TubeZoogy although it has been portrayed as a fictional plot device i think with the right training both physical and psychological, one can perform Zui Quan while intoxicated, it is not advised, but it could be possible. basically its an involuntary muscle memory, being able to do it without thinking, and i think the closest thing to not thinking there can be would be under the influence of a drug or alcohol. not saying its ok, just saying could be possible.

@Mexibuddie yes you can, some advanced shaolin teachers will be able to teach it to you. However inorder to do it well, you should learn basic kung fu first

@SirCheezey Yes in the movies they gain unpredictability by becoming drunk. In real life you do this by training yourself into unpredictable patterns. Where one man would Kip to standing you kip to a forward roll to a lopsided cart wheel to the left. This is truly an amazing martial art that no one in seattle washington teaches.
@SirCheezey well, it depends on who practice it, cause i practice the drunken boxing (zui quan) and if i become drunk, i feel with more energy, and the balance is not important in my style, cause u know there are 8 styles of 8 gods, and 5 styles of animals, i practice all styles in one zui quan, but im my chase i can b drunk and figth, it isn´t like jackie chan in drunken master, but i can figth very good
Well there is the performance art and then there is combative zui quan. Since it is a martial art depending on surprise probably not so useful in mma. Also because alot of the strikes involve punching your opponent in the nuts, eyes, throat, its greatest utility isn't useful in a regulated fight :P. However, saying it wouldn't work in fight, would probably leave many people surprised in street fight, nursing your testicles and having someone poke you in the eye.
@three11creatures Fighting is interesting. In real, honest observation, someone can do just about anything in a fighting situation, and if it works for that split second, they'll win. The greatest treasure and secret to traditional Zui Quan, Ninjitsu, and a handful of other surviving styles is that they don't teach techniques first, but the basics of reading an entire moment; environment, self, opponent, mood, etc. and turn all of them to their advantage.
@SavageInsight A Drunk can kick, and a drunk can duck, but a drunk can also swing a barstool. Body mechanics, speed, power, etc. are all just tools; martial notes to be played at the right beat and rhythm. Every style is a song from another artist.
Hello, I am the "white douche" you are referring to.
I hunt two or three times a year, make weekly visits to the range, and carry a handgun with me at almost all times. Let's say I get into a fight with a kung-fu master. I pull out my gun. All of your years of martial arts training have now been rendered useless by the 21st Century.
If I ever got into a fight with anyone, including a kung fu master, it would be in self-defense. Also, you will go to prison if you break a man's head with your foot, so I don't know where you're going with that point either.
The fact of the matter is physical strength and finesse has been negated by easily accessible technology. Any fat slob with a gun can take down the most powerful well-respected kung fu master in seconds.
@LivesUnderABridge yea and you get disarmed or dont pull out a gun in time and its over anyway. and also, whos to say he doesnt also carry a weapon? Just because you have a gun doesnt make you more powerful.
If a Kung Fu master carries a gun then what's the point of even knowing Kung Fu? You're only proving my point that modern technology trumps archaic fighting styles every day. If you were going to fight someone who was possibly in possession of a firearm would you rather have a gun or a black belt?
It's a no brainer. I can kill a Kung Fu master with a gun from hundreds of yards away, meanwhile he or she must be within five or six feet to even strike me, let alone kill me.
No, gun + Kung Fu is not greater than gun. Why? Because if I shot a Kung Fu master and he shot me we'd both die. This isn't rock, paper, scissors you dolt.
Not to mention I'm a fairly good shot, frequenting the range, hunting, etc. It doesn't matter if you know Kung Fu if my odds of shooting you are just as good as yours are. Besides, you completely changed the direction of your arguement once I pointed out that any slob with a gun can kill a Shaolin warrior.
@LivesUnderABridge Then go do it and ill just watch, you big macho hunter man.
btw you shoot animals, you are horrible as man is the worst animal. Why not hunt something even? like metal claws vs a fucking tiger. Even out the score, you know like true "sport". hunting isnt a sport, its a method of getting food.
anyway, I dont care, theres no purpose to your argument anymore because Im never going to be convinced a redneck with a gun can beat a skilled martial artist with a gun.
You've just assumed ten things about me with zero evidence to back up any of it. Meaningless ad hominem. I hail from New York, so no, I'm not a redneck. In fact, I'm just about as far removed from that term as possible, being a "yankee." Not that cheap insults bear any merit. Further more, I do not hunt for sport, I hunt for food. I happen to enjoy the taste of venison, and it's far more rewarding to gather your own food after days of hunting then to just buy it at the store.
And the fact that you're "never going to be convinced" that someone with a gun could easily defeat a skilled martial artists is only evident of how thick you are. You just cannot accpet that fact that anyone with a decent shot could take out your most revered martial artists. It's also evident of a complete lack of basic reason, as I'm sure anyone with a functioning brain would prefer a firearm to a fist.
Sooner or later you are going to end up in a fight without a gun. What are you going to do then? Say "hold on, I need to run home, grab my gun and some ammo, and come back here to shoot you"? We all know a gun will end someone. The point of training in Kung Fu and other martial arts is to protect yourself, which works out nicely since most people don't carry guns.
And more importantly, martial art training is more spiritual and mental than physical.
Good for you? Unless you're starting a fight with one, most martial artists won't even attack you. It's for self-defense. So unless you're the asshole who's starting fights, including with the gun, I don't think you have to worry about it. So there. Everybody wins, not just the sissy carrying a gun.
@three11creatures im sure it would work....even with dirty boxng with fake drunk move would "surprise" him when you go for a straight punch while faking....
@three11creatures Naw, its usually some Brazilian that after practicing 2 months of Gracie Ju-Jistu is able to see the countless flaws with imitating a drunken fool.
Yes, white....and as a mostly white person myself I can safely safe almost 100% of douche bags that say these ancient, well developed fighting styles are untrained, white people. I mean seriously, if it didn't work in practical situations then it wouldn't have been so deeply practiced for hundreds of years. That's almost like saying science isn't real science from 50 years ago even if it's a law that has been proven to be true.
@Superflamer99 Funny, I've seen all walks of life bash kung fu like this. White, black, mexican, oriental, don't matter. Racism is racism and it's stupid.
@Superflamer99 thank you! jeez finally somone understands, gung fu has been around since 600 BC! if not earlier than that. There's a good reason as to why it's still practiced today and still around It works! i'd like to see somone challenge a shao lin monk or any monk from any temple for that matter they'll get beat so quick. they say gung fu take's 15 years to master and they start little chinese kids off at the age of 4 by the time there 19 there there leathal in every form of gung fu
boredman is correct, the whole purpose of zui quan is to give the appearance that you are intoxicated, when really, youre going against them with one of the most difficult martial arts ever, striking with impossible speed and agility at any god given time. its truly amazing.
Ok, whatever it is, this fighting style is incridebly nice, though it looks like dancing to me.
Yes some would say this is like Rock Lee from Naruto. In a way, i think it is true, but Naruto developpers took the idea of a drunken fighter from that art.
i've always said that if i were to learn a martial art, it would definately be drunken boxing. I've always heard it called 水圏 (suiken), not zui quan. maybe suiken is the japanese name for it. sui means water, so suiken either means water fist or water dance. (i don't know which)
definitely one of the harder styles to learn. looks like you could hurt yourself pretty easily too, if you don't know what you're doing with all that bending and whatnot.
most definetly, I just started learning (by just I mean this is my second day) Note: I do not have a sensei, so most of my stuff is pretty....ehhh I get most of it from observation....
People say that this wouldn;t be useful ina fight but think about it...you pick a fight with a guy who's staggering and stuff and you think that you'll give in the old one two and drop his ass, then he dodges everything you throw at him and kicks you in the head.
This IS a great fighting style if used in a fight. The way the guy does it here is very flashy, but lacks real power. If you want to watch a real master of drunken boxing who COULD whip just about any1s butt, all you have to do is watch Jackie Chan in action. He combines the heart of drunken and monkey kung fu with lethal efficiency!!
Drunken Boxing is not intended to be a combative martial art. It really is more of a dance, kind of like Capoeira. I'm sure this guy is a great martial artist, because he has tremendous agility and balance, but if it came down to fighting another martial artist, I doubt he would fight like this.
Tbh this is more of an art than a fighting style. Only if ur really good at it can you use it in a fight otherwise it sucks.

@TeamEOF the goal of drunken style is to be unexpected and confuse your opponent
to look vulnerable but deadly
to make you enemy to think he winning and then to show him that he was wrong
drunken style isnt about vital points its about deception.
plus being drunk make your muscles to be more relaxed and flexable allowing you to move and to be in wierd positions without hurting yourself.
allso being drunk make you feel less pain when you get hit

Well there is the performance art and then there is combative zui quan. Since it is a martial art depending on surprise probably not so useful in mma. Also because alot of the strikes involve punching your opponent in the nuts, eyes, throat, its greatest utility isn't useful in a regulated fight :P. However, saying it wouldn't work in fight, would probably leave many people surprised in street fight, nursing your testicles and having someone poke you in the eye.

this martial art doesnt actually work in a fight, theres videos of these guys getting owned by martial arts. Plus the strikes do no damage

@three11creatures
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge
hello "white douche" why do u get into a fight with a kung-fu master??
And renember u will get into prison if u shoot a man......
darktop1 1 year ago
@darktop1
It's a hypothetical situation...
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge yea and you get disarmed or dont pull out a gun in time and its over anyway. and also, whos to say he doesnt also carry a weapon? Just because you have a gun doesnt make you more powerful.
runemaster123654 1 year ago
@runemaster123654
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge you miss the point. gun + kungfu > gun. Knowledge is power and you seem to be lacking power.
runemaster123654 1 year ago
@runemaster123654
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge Then go do it and ill just watch, you big macho hunter man.
btw you shoot animals, you are horrible as man is the worst animal. Why not hunt something even? like metal claws vs a fucking tiger. Even out the score, you know like true "sport". hunting isnt a sport, its a method of getting food.
anyway, I dont care, theres no purpose to your argument anymore because Im never going to be convinced a redneck with a gun can beat a skilled martial artist with a gun.
runemaster123654 1 year ago
@runemaster123654
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@runemaster123654
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge
AndyMan4000 1 year ago
@AndyMan4000
"The point of training in Kung Fu and other martial arts is to protect yourself, which works out nicely since most people don't carry guns."
Right. Well I do. So again, I can render a lifetime of strenuous training useless in one pull of a trigger. I rule.
LivesUnderABridge 1 year ago
@LivesUnderABridge
Good for you? Unless you're starting a fight with one, most martial artists won't even attack you. It's for self-defense. So unless you're the asshole who's starting fights, including with the gun, I don't think you have to worry about it. So there. Everybody wins, not just the sissy carrying a gun.

@Superflamer99 thank you! jeez finally somone understands, gung fu has been around since 600 BC! if not earlier than that. There's a good reason as to why it's still practiced today and still around It works! i'd like to see somone challenge a shao lin monk or any monk from any temple for that matter they'll get beat so quick. they say gung fu take's 15 years to master and they start little chinese kids off at the age of 4 by the time there 19 there there leathal in every form of gung fu

boredman is correct, the whole purpose of zui quan is to give the appearance that you are intoxicated, when really, youre going against them with one of the most difficult martial arts ever, striking with impossible speed and agility at any god given time. its truly amazing.

i've always said that if i were to learn a martial art, it would definately be drunken boxing. I've always heard it called 水圏 (suiken), not zui quan. maybe suiken is the japanese name for it. sui means water, so suiken either means water fist or water dance. (i don't know which)
42connorzielinski42 2 years ago
in japanese ken can mean either sword or fist.

definitely one of the harder styles to learn. looks like you could hurt yourself pretty easily too, if you don't know what you're doing with all that bending and whatnot.
cgonda 2 years ago 2
most definetly, I just started learning (by just I mean this is my second day) Note: I do not have a sensei, so most of my stuff is pretty....ehhh I get most of it from observation....

This IS a great fighting style if used in a fight. The way the guy does it here is very flashy, but lacks real power. If you want to watch a real master of drunken boxing who COULD whip just about any1s butt, all you have to do is watch Jackie Chan in action. He combines the heart of drunken and monkey kung fu with lethal efficiency!!

it's got history, but it's not exactly a practical method for fighting... surely other martial arts would be better if you had to defend yourself?

Drunken Boxing is not intended to be a combative martial art. It really is more of a dance, kind of like Capoeira. I'm sure this guy is a great martial artist, because he has tremendous agility and balance, but if it came down to fighting another martial artist, I doubt he would fight like this.
OriginalDesko 3 years ago
no offense desko but drunken boxing is insanely dangerous if your one of those people who dont feel pain.
But what you said before is true im not saying ur wrong he probably wouldnt fight like this
