@fairfresh: This whole movie was staged, so the 'escaping macaw' was most likely a trained bird. Quite realistic tho and drives home the point of the plight of these magnificent animals -- all of them (not just the parrots that endure such untold suffering in the illegal trapping and selling trade at the hand of man).
@TheMuffinBurgler Agree, also there are breeders that Only breed birds for breeding stock by Not hand raising them, these birds are exchanged all the time. So it's not necessary to demand 'wild caught birds' in order to breed. The exotic pet bird trade can exist without any illegal bird activities.
Sadly Koda WPR refuge almost closes down every year, so 'home for life' is actually 'death row' for many birds. Huntbatch informs visitors she prefer they were dead than rehome. Other bird rescues also have hyacinths.
Please support The World Parrot Trust to help save the endangered parrots of Word-wide Rain Forests.
The World Parrot Trust in need of support for apprehending 500 wild Congo African Greys, illegally smuggled to Shanghai. Join their fly free campaign.
This seems staged, but it happens, and the heart break is just as powerful if not more-so. Have you seen the cages of African grays stuffed to the gills? Often they die from asphyxiation.
Do you notice how none of those birds fly alone? They're very social, intelligent, loving, and don't deserve imprisonment.
I feel so fortunate to be able to help out where I live, I visit the world parrot refuge on vancouver island. When I visit though, I'm more like a volunteer because I help the workers out and I have gained a few parrot friends, including a beautiful hyacinth macaw :)
Yay for the Hyacinth. I would have been really happy if the monkeys got away too. I don't understand why human kind keeps taking these beloved creatures from the wild for their profit and or destruction.
I wanted to cheer when the bird got free. It is so sad to see those cages. But as long as there is a market the capture of wild animals will continue. The traders/trappers should be the ones in cages.
I own this movie. Before saying it is staged or cameras were attached to a birds head to get the footage, please rent the movie and watch. It explains how it was filmed which is amazing and the years it took to do it. This is 90 minutes of the best of hundreds of hours of footage. It is an incredible film.
As long as they take good care of the birds, I don't see any problem with the bird trade. But for those people that don't care and capture birds with the intent to just make money and they poorly care for them. That's wrong. Its actually good to have a certain amount of birds captive so we can breed them so they don't become extinct. But I don't agree with the cruel treatment.
Okay answer me this. Imagine you are an explorer, ever since you where a kid you have wanted to explore the world and you have been doing it for quite a few years and explored many places, money is not an issue. Then one day you are forced to stay inside your house for the REST OF YOUR LIFE! How would you feel? They even brake your legs so you dont get too far.
your warped, do you watch rescue shelter videos?have u ever seen a naked, infected, half dead miserable, bird, would u like to be kidnapped, taken away from your loved ones and put in a cage, and ignored, and fed garbage, and hit and thrown up against the wall and broken cause you asked for some attention and love, you need to go to a rescue shelter and seee for your self what these birds lives are like. god put birds in trees, not cages, what gives us the right to do otherwise
I agree it was in all likelyhood staged, however I'm sure escapes in that sort of situation do happen, those birds are pretty smart. It's terrible that endangered species like that are still being taken from the wild. The only time it's excusable is if something is going to be done with them to increase the likelihood of the survival of the species.
That is why it is just so damn tempting for so many people to continue wild bird trade. The ones that are captive bred are bred by people that have money in their pockets so they can wait quite a few months to sell the bird, that is why they put high prices. While people in the Amazon dont have time or money and are looking for a fast sell so they put a low price on the bird.
How did they film the macaws flying? oh, on the rest of this I cried and cried...I am certain you heard about the "Noahs Ark" captured off of Peru's Coastline...there is still video of it if you Google it under News...luckily they caught the boat and the captain and were able to get the animals back home. But that footage is sad too.
Deenerzz is correct. This whole "film" is completely staged. (1) Wild macaws in the rain forest would not fly down and land on the branch that had a cameraman standing next to it. They would avoid humans at all cost. (2) The camera shots of the birds flying over the water, yet the camera stays right with them. I don't know of anyone that is capable of flying over water along side flying macaws. Ever heard of special FX? Come on people, use your brain.
I will preface my post with this. I disagree with buying wild caught birds, and am glad the country I live in does not allow the importations of wild birds. Domestic stock can be used instead of wild imports. Having said that I want to point out this was a staged event. Come on, at least three cameras on the boat to "capture" this breath taking moment? Nothing spontaneous about it. Designed to pull our heart strings. What happened to nature shows that did not resort to these tactics?
I am pretty sure they were going to be sold on the exotic pet market which is why we need to not buy wild animals like those for pets...We may love them, but if you love someone set them free! beautiful vid thanks
This is great! I'm glad Animal Planet did something for once to actually HELP animals - usually, they appear to be too busy running Petco and Protecter and Gambol (pro-animal testing company) commercials, along with shows on how wonderful Sea World and dairy farms are! It makes me mad that they would allow such cruel companies to have ads on their station, when it's intended to save animals. Oh well... the video clip you showed is very powerful and meaningful. I hope it educates people!
Opening up that bamboo cage was nothing. My Blue and Gold macaw can open up his wrought iron cage door that has a key padlock securing the slide bolt. I leave the key in the lock (in case of an emergency) but it is on the outside of the cage door. There is only 1" between the bars of his cage, yet he figured out how to get his beak onto the key and turn it, popping the lock. He then knocks the lock to the floor and slides the bolt and opens the door so he can be on TOP of his cage, not in it!
We can help to stop this travesty through supporting ecotourism, supporting conservation efforts of wildlife habitat, and by choosing parrot adoption. These choices will make a difference!
GO TO: BirdAdoption[dot]org and click on GROUPS -- they list Parrot Rescues by State and Country. Also check with your local Humane Societies and/or Pet Stores -- they may know of some Parrot Rescues in your area. If there are none, see if you can find someone who lives in your area who owns parrots and who may need help in caring for them. Good Luck! Our feathered friends need you!
Oh wow! the tears just came when I saw all those poor helpless animals in cages! Then the Hyacinth got free! Wow! loved it staged or not! I would like to do what these monsters do to animals to them! How can I help? I want to do more and rescue animals please help me start something here in NY.
Find a parrot rescue organization in your area and volunteer there (you will probably find a parrot who will claim you as his new mom)! If you have trouble locating one, go to PETFINDER[dot]COM and type in your zip code: that should bring up rescues close to you. As a proud and dedicated parrot mom, you know how much care, love and work these birds require, how noisy and messy they are and that they are a lifetime commitment. DONATIONS are another way to help out! BLESS YOU and your Grey! :>)
They should buy/adopt/breed instead of trapping these majestic creatures.
Also, why would someone film it?? Did they pay to do this movie on purpose?

@PinkSaltire08 Buying baby birds is what STOPS this from happening. Buying captive bred birds is a huge fork in the electrical plug for poachers.
