Fincher deserved a chance to tell the story he wanted to. Shame the way things turned out. If you haven't seen it, I recommend the Assembly cut though. It's about as close as you'll get to Fincher's original idea.
I didn't like the movie. I'm not blaming Fincher, I'm blaming everybody. They all went in without a finished script, and without a clear, comprehensive idea of what the fucking film should be.
And now some nitpicking:
Killing Newt and Hicks at the very beginning was depressing and downbeat. And who the fuck decided that Ripley should be the victim of an attempted gang-rape, with an accompanying industrial-metal soundtrack? And why are 90% of these "most dangerous villains in the world" cockneys?
There are 3 huge problems with this movie, and they're called Hicks, Newt and Bishop. Whoever made that decision, rightly earned him/herself and the movie the wrath of the audience. Which is shame because, from a directing standpoint, the movie's very well executed. Too good to be outright disowned from the continuity in the minds of many of the viewers, myself included.
That probably goes back to the pre-production process. None of the scripts (save for Gibson's) featured any of those characters. I have a feeling they were always destined to die, and were supposed to be chestburster victims at one point.
And I wish more people knew the truth behind alien 3, honestly I bet this movie would have been regarded fantastic if newt, hicks and bishop were in it not as cadavers and if the fx were fixed up
this movie really isn't as bad as people say, but I think the reasons preluding it's fate were the writers faults, I personally like the theatrical cut
The directors cut somewhat saves this movie! Fincher did an amazing job considering he was dealt a shit hand.
The theatrical cut doesn't hold a candle to the extended version
I want to point out that I'm English.
However the cast were too much even for me. If theyd have stuck with Charles Dance, Danny Webb as 85, Pete Postlethwait, and had more Americans in the cast it would have helped.
Clemens was killed way too early!

Fincher is one of my favorite directors of all time! It wasn't his fault that Alien 3 sucked. Blame it on fox! I think Finch wouldve made a better movie had they gave him a complete script. oh well. his other films are LEGEND..wait for it..DARY!
Fincher didnt get a chance to make the film he wanted. look at his other Movies afterwards, they are incredible. Also Weaver was constantly arguing with fox execs to let him get on with his job, personally i like the movie for all it flaws, both versions. but it couldve been brilliant.
alien3 should be about hicks, newt, ripley & bishop returning back to earth and encountered aliens again back on earth.

(fucking iPhone - no character limits)
Especially when the characters swear. The accents sound comical most of the time. I can see how a lot of the audiences reacted negatively.
Not to mention all the other things that this film got wrong

"I can only imagine how great the film would be if Fox had just let the man do his damned job! "
Agreed.
I still think the film is amazing no matter which version you watch. Was nice to see that clip unedited after all this time. Thank You.

The look on his face says it all. "I'm gonna catch hell for saying this on camera, but damn does it feel good to get off my chest!"
