the music is beautifully appropriate, optimistic and timeless, yet tinged with sadness. Reminisces of a time when beautiful fragile actresses like Clara Bow were around. There never will be another Clara Bow, my dear grandmother was named after her - God Bless them both
She reminds me of Sarah Michelle Gellar. I know she came first, but the backwards wording I had to say it the other way around was so confusing that by the end of it, you would have forgotten my point.
@1Urganda1 All of the scenes are from Clara's signature film "IT". The last scene is I think a slowed down clip of her on the stern of the Itola regretting having turned down Cyrus's proposal. The clip order skips through the movie following the storyline, with the one of Clara getting out of the Limo slightly out of order, as it should have come first, prior to the opening Ritz dinner scenes. Interesting how a well done silent movie didn't really need dialogue.
My name is Claire and I am often the spitting image of her. Mannerisms, outlook, facial expressions, hair... the works. My nickname growing up was Clarabell and her name was Clara Bell after she was married. I've read interviews and we share the same opinions and outlook. I posted a photo of her on my Facebook and everyone thought it was me! Is there any money to be made in Clara Bow lookalike work? I could do it easy.
@claireyfairycake her reputation as a foul slut and alcoholic lunatic would work against any commercial success for you. she wasn't very pretty in the nude either. she was rumored to be very low class ralph kramden new yorker. her popularity as a star faded away a long time ago. I saw one of her films she could not have any relevance in our time the 21st century.
@atfatw Come Now, photographically Clara was/is a beautiful doll that would appeal in any generation. She had a rough upbringing, and no one would mistake her for Claudette Colbert in person. However she was not an alcoholic as so many of the 20's stars wound up. As for those who think they resemble her, consider getting work at Universal Studios in Orlando. Betty Boop (who was modeled after her) is all the rage, and actresses dress up as Betty and mingle with guests. Boop-Boop de Boop!
@beaswann Same here. I look really like her! I put a picture of her on Facebook and everyone thought it was me. And watching her in motion, we have the same mannerisms. And from reading interviews, the same outlook. It creeped me out so much I started investigating my family history!
I was watching Betty Boop here on Youtube, then I did some research, I found out that Clara Bow was an inspiration to the cartoon. As I read further about Clara Bow, I became an instant fan, I'm already a fan of Charlie Chaplin :3 Clara had such a sad past :( At least she died rich and famous.
@XXohexplosionsXX Not really: Bow is her mom: Cla - ra - Bow.....Be - tty - Boop. Three syllabus, right? And the fact that Bow was the household superstar 1926-1931 of course. Ever heard of the sweet and seductive Helen Kane? I thought so. She was a singer and provided Boop with a cute voice. That's all, but sure plenty enough.
We will never again see her equal, words completely fail to describe her and her art, they knew this long ago and so just gave her the title of the 'IT' girl. She was of herself the icon for a entire generation- such talent comes along but seldom.
For early fourth wall check out the Vampire series made in Paris around 1918. A guy watches someone stuffing money into a wallet and each time there is a cramming of the cash the guy turns to the camera and makes a surprized look.
I'm not sure grinning at the camera constitutes breaking the 4th wall. Fatty Arbuckle gestured for the camera to move in 1917's "Coney Island," and it obliged. But again, I'm not sure, techincally, that this is breaking the 4th wall.
Shakespeare's characters oftnen addressed the audience, but even they weren't the first to break the 4th wall. That distinction belongs to the Ancient Greeks, who started breaking the 4th wall pretty much as soon as they invented drama.
@prmass1 LOL You dont think that would be a pit creepy? I am tempted though. Anyway, people always say I have her mouth. I wish I had a Angelina Jolie mouth, but I suppose Clara Bow's will do!
Not sure if anyone answered you question regarding the "4th wall". I do know that the film "The Great Train Robbery" did in in 1903, when a character points and shoots a gun towards the camera. It was quite a shocker in the days with people running out of the theater. Now my question is, what is the film where she looks at camera (min 1:54)?
We have the same name and her birthday is 1 month and 1day apart from mine .. ( im not counting the years cos she is like 89 years r somthing older dan me :P )
Prior to watching this video, the only time I really ever heard of Clara Bow was on The Beverly Hillbillies, when Jed Clampett mentioned a “Clara Bow picture”. After seeing this, I can certainly say she was a very beautiful woman.
I feel much richer in my movie knowledge having watched this. Thanks very much for sharing it. Also, an excellent piece of piano music.
I never seen an actor, making use of every moment, communicating her character so masterful, the way Clara Bow does. Thanks "gohepcat". You opened a door I didn't knew existed.
I recently red in an article from the sixties, that Clara, with only two exceptions, insured her producers by at least a 2 to 1 safe return on their investments. Considering she appeared in more than 50 productions It's doubtful none in motion picture history can top that. It's like her notorious, still standing fan-mail record, from January 1929; 45000 mail/month. There should be a huge statue of her at her birthplace in Brooklyn.
@MissGoldenDreams13 my project was using Erikson's stages of development to determine were a person was at at specific points in there life. So I studied her biography and had to determine what stage she was at.
Wonderful acting and such expressive, beautiful eyes. I'd seen her in silents before but hadn't paid enough attention to her performances alone. Thanks for sharing!

For Clara Bow fans I just discovered she has a fan page at myspace and two later in life pictures but the most interesting was a 1960 letter written to a fan. Thats about five years before her death which she must have been 53 yrs old. She seems very alert and alive and explains why she retired from the movie business at 26 years.
Searched all over the internet and didn't see pictures of Clara Bow later in life. She died at age 60 but yet I didn't find any pictures after she retired from the movie busniess. Anyone had any luck?
Generally, the motivation for breaking the forth wall is to alienate the audience, to pull them out of the action and remind them that what they are engaged in is artifice. I'm not certain, but I was watching It the other day, and at 1:54 I think she's looking at Antonio Moreno. So, you might say she is breaking the forth wall, but it doesn't produce the desired effect. Please, feel free to disagree/argue, that's just my opinion.
@MonkeysPawHahalaba It's been awhile since I've seen "It"...but in the vid, she looks at the camera, then to her right....where I assume Moreno was. Actors looking directly at the audience, as if they were there, was fairly common in earlier comedies, (Arbuckle and Chaplin when he was doing shorts) but I don't know how much it would've been done in 1927.
Man, I just learned about her today, watching these early years of hollywood on youtube, and man, clara bow was one stunning woman!!!, If she was one of those teen stars today, i probably wouldve had a crush on her too, haha:)
Why is it all of the women that make me want to live are dead? Oh', I'm exaggerating...no I'm not. Maybe a little. Anyway, I love the silent movies as much as the sound movies up to 1939. I saw Wings in the Ohio Theater last year. Clara Bow is an audience grabber if there ever was one. I can see why she was the 'it' girl.
her biography is so sad and tragic..such a shame Hollywood at the time shunned and took advantage of her..she was rlly full of light despite her messed up childhood..she has the same bday as my mom ^^ Clara Bow..always the IT Girl <3
Wow... 1:53 gave me chills... it's like you're back there, living it, as if she's talking directly to you from ninety years ago... I adore Clara, one can never get too much of her! Thanks for posting! :D
I HIGHLY DOUBT that Clara was schizophrenic simply because the doctors at the Institute For Living had absolutely NO PROOF to back their claims up.
It was very common for women to be diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia back then without any PROOF from the doctors that treated them. Oftentimes, they'd just say that the women were "hysterical" and needed bed rest.
Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) was right. They had faces. They didn't need dialogues. Wonderful period. Great movies ! Thanks for this very nice tribute to Clara Bow.
What wonderful eyes; such a spirited, funny yet tragic woman. More on Clara Bow career, lovers and background. Sirens of The Roaring 1920's - Clara Bow
The Institute For Living diagnosed her as being schizophrenic in some way, which was supposed to explain her complaints of physical ailments, despite the fact that medical doctors could find nothing wrong. For me, I think her physical/mental problems stemmed from her leaving the screen. She thrived on the adulation of her 'fan friends', and the 45000 letters she was recieving a week in 1928, moreso than the money ever did. Had doctors considered this, they might have prescribed screen time.
lol everyone thinks, or rather wishes.., they look like Clara Bow. Nope. There's only one person that beautiful.

Wow... 1:53 gave me chills... it's like you're back there, living it, as if she's talking directly to you from ninety years ago... I adore Clara, one can never get too much of her! Thanks for posting! :D

She was breathtaking. You can never have too much Clara Bow. Thanks for posting this, gohepcat.

What idiots they were!!

Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) was right. They had faces. They didn't need dialogues. Wonderful period. Great movies ! Thanks for this very nice tribute to Clara Bow.

I never read that she had mental illness, and addiction problems. I will have to look again.
I love this movie. She is adorable to watch.
barbarac102 2 years ago
The Institute For Living diagnosed her as being schizophrenic in some way, which was supposed to explain her complaints of physical ailments, despite the fact that medical doctors could find nothing wrong. For me, I think her physical/mental problems stemmed from her leaving the screen. She thrived on the adulation of her 'fan friends', and the 45000 letters she was recieving a week in 1928, moreso than the money ever did. Had doctors considered this, they might have prescribed screen time.
