There is no explanation. Most all of them in the shot change in a strange way. I think the fact that the people were so calm over transmission meant that they were seeing something unbelievable. If there was that many floating objects in space, it wouldn't be safe to send humans into space. @019208237 They just appear because they are following the curvature of the earth and can only be seen when they are in a spot where sunlight can reflect off of them. The shuttle changes direction some times which make them appear to change direction. If they are moving at the same speed as the shuttle it will look like it stopped. The shuttle flies and 17,000 mph so if the object was stopped it would be just a blur going by camera, so none of your theories work.

You can see on the STS-75 Negative video, another object which is also changing it's course. At 2:53 sec the object is a little above the middle of the the tether, is going up and at 3:11 sec it stops and moves back (going down towards the tether) at 180 degrees. Also, the matter of the object's knob can be taken into consideration, obious can't be a natural shape...

The STS-75 video was shot with a visible spectrum SIT Vidicon tube camera. The UV sensitive TOP camera was present on the mission, but used during specific scientific experiments only. I wouldn't say the objects appear 'detailed' at any point in the video, but at some point you can see that they are not round discs at all, rather irregular shaped 'blobs' spinning through space the way you would expect them to. The explanation for the increase in 'detail' is that as the camera zooms out, the depth of field increases and near objects become better focused. I'm sure you'll agree this makes sense :)

That's just a commonly known camera limitation relating to 'depth of field'. When a camera is focused on a distant object, nearfield objects can become so out of focus they form a blurry transparent disc with characteristics determined by the design of the optics (a zoom lens such as the 6:1 used here tends to reduce depth of field, and in this case the construction produces peripheral notches which shift according to the position of the object in the FOV).

Light from the distant in-focus object dominates and appears in the foreground. Normally the nearfield objects would appear much fainter, but this camera is image intensified so they still appear bright. This is because the intensifier processes the image AFTER the optics have produced the apparent reversal of foreground/background. Another factor is that this camera blacks out portions of the image which are too bright (see NASA's lighting footage during MLE studies using this camera).

Actually, at this altitude space is not a total vacuum, and since the Shuttle, Tether and objects (ice and debris imo) are all travelling >17000mph, they are subject to aerodynamic drag (your 'wind'). Shuttle-born objects can interact with its plasma wake, and any which drift out into the plasma stream rushing by will be slowed by drag and begin to fall earthward (basic orbital mechanics). This is why all objects which appear to change course ultimately head in the same direction (i.e. earth).

Firstly, i said 'Shuttle-born objects'. Common knowledge: ice and payload bay debris are virtually constant companions on Shuttle flights. Of course they monitor it, but objects which came from the Shuttle in the first place clearly do not pose much of a threat (low mass and relative velocity). Secondly, space debris is a huge problem and getting worse. Google 'Orbital Debris Quarterly News' before you state what you merely 'think' to be true as fact. There's more to this than you realise ;)

But had there been that many than it would have been a serious problem. And I don't see any reason to why ice should suddenly lose its grip from the ship when they are in outer space, as there isn't much force interacting with it. I would believe that most of the ice that could break would do so when they rushed away from the atmosphere.

There are a surprising number of ice sources on the Shuttle, e.g. the cooling system's flash evaporator, waste water dumps (fuel cell, crew by-products etc.) and many thruster nozzles which frequently leak. Some ice is ejected and some gets shaken loose by regular thruster firings (needed to maintain orbit/course and even change course). If you read NASA's studies you'll find that ice/debris from the Shuttle can re-contact later on due to orbital mechanics. It's interesting stuff, go read it.

It's not about the amount of ice/debris, it's about mass and velocity relative to the Shuttle. Ice/debris FROM the Shuttle is low in mass and travelling at roughly the same velocity as the Shuttle, so it doesn't matter how much there is, it poses little danger. Yes, very small objects travelling in different orbits can be dangerous (which is why NASA tracks them and actively avoids them), but that's a different matter altogether. Shuttles have survived many such impacts before (can link docs).

When you see the directions to "keep your eye..." look down at the third line where it has the word "video", keep looking in the area where the D and E are. You can CLEARLY see from those videos that the earth is behind the tether away from the shuttle... it drifts off a bit so that Earth is no longer in view, but is still closer to the Earth than the shuttle. The object that arches itself is an object that is in NATURAL ORBIT around the Earth, unlike the other floating space dust that is merrily making it's way past.

Why does everyone assume that none of the objects should change course? Contrary to popular belief, this footage was shot with a visible spectrum SIT Vidicon tube camera mounted in the Payload Bay. It was no more capable of imaging 'force' than any other camera present on the mission. The mission took place in the Ionosphere. These objects are a mystery for there are many of them and some appear out of nowhere. Also, space debris floats freely, is 'spaced' out, and the looks vary on the debris. NASA reported these objects as appearing out of nowhere and even admitted that this is usually not the case with small non-flashing ice or random debris. How much Electricity did that Tether store?

BTW, the reason so may of the objects seem to appear and then dissapear is because they are moving in and out of the shadow of the shuttle.

i don't think that is cause of the shadow, look closely at 30sec. on the bottom of the tether, you saw one appear another one just after and then there is one whe pass just on their left, this one come from a long distance and he's not affect by shadow.

Actually there is also a third object that does not follow a straight line. In the bottom left hand corner of the film just above the white curved object or glare there is an object that moves from left to right in a curved path moving towards the bottom of the screen slightly. So either there is a lot of ufo's in orbit that just happened to appear in this shot or this is in no way a unique and unusual phenomena.

I guess it wanted to go faster and changed direction. UFO's are nippy little things. i know its not, but some footage just looks like a touch shineing into a fish tank with bits floating inside.

it looks to me like small objects in water. daphnia. and can someone tell me or at least clarify, how you get a ten mile long tether into space, especially, given the footage its width must be huge also,as mentioned in the vid, much wider than expected...i estimate about a third of a mile wide. big 'tether' that.

I did a video to this and like you saw that and the more I watched the more I saw some move around each other. And notice how none collide as well. To me it looks like UFO the way they pulsate all looking the same, Great video by the way. Good to see that highlighted :-)

NASA's official explanation will be Weather/Space Phenomena, Flying Space debris, Meteor and what not...I guarantee NASA will never say or use the word UFO..Everyone is scared of inside job..I guess everyone signed the death contract when they joined the NASA company..

Actually, in watching this again, there is ANOTHER object that changes course and speed as well... under the tether, an object approaches the tether, stops, and does a nearly 180 degree turn and goes the opposite direction.

nice catch, i've never notice this before but did you see that?: they don't only change course they apearfrom NOWHERE too that a look at full video(6:27 lenght) and watch at 5:05 you'll see a little ufo appear and just later a bigger one,it's on downside of the tether, there is certainly others but i didn't pay attention to them.

they are making joke with our face, it's all, but what is sure is we are not alone. saw them from my own eyes during the belgian ufo wave(around 20 years ago), i've seen this triangular shape with 4 lights and few seconds later we heard a fighter jet flying in the same direction of the ufo, i was 5 or 6 and it's like it was yesterday and i'll never forget it!

after re-watching the video there is so many who appear/disappear. i didn't know that ice particle could teleport herself and blinking too and also change direction and controlling speed! so i guess i will fall asleep less dumb than before!
