You'll get the same answer everywhere you go, every school is like this. If you chose to make your experience in Amherst this terrible, then I pity you. Lorain (the city to the east of Amherst is more tolerable, just the school system isn't that great. Much more diverse and accepting people in L-town compared to Amherst, OH).
It is known that the "Klan" holds meetings in Mill Hollow. If you're a minority, I definitely don't recommend you go near that place at night time. It may sound silly, but I've had a 6 foot cross burned in my backyard in 2005. In high school, someone dressed up as a Neo-Nazi and was never told to change his Halloween costume. It disgusts me.
Not everyone in Amherst is racist, but I can definitely say it's been instituionalized here. Ignorant people are everywhere, but this city certainly isn't accepting of a lot of different types of people. When my parents moved to this city, the man who showed them around the city made sure to note that "there are no n*ggers living here" and that was in the early 80's. The only thing I agree with is the politics involved in sports. The rest is only because you make it that way for yourself. Of course there will be people who don't like you or judge you but you are being absurdly more judgmental then anyone in Amherst. And I've only been in Amherst for 6 years. It is a shit hole. The people here are all egotistic, backstabbing, slutty, pot heads that cannot seem to figure out how to separate "don't" and "not" in a sentence. My friends and I are made fun of all of the time. But we're some of the rare nice kids in Amherst..... Sadly.
