This is a very underrated song. It also never had a video. The record company wanted to see if Cyndi could have a hit without a video. "All Through the Night" peaked at #5.
Wow. I thought my immediate emotional reaction to hearing this song for the first time as a kid in the 80's was just a personal thing. Turns out I wasn't the only one.
I had the radio playing quietly really late at night. There was a full moon and I was looking out at the street lights and the clouds when this song came on. I thought the words and music were the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard. I was stunned by it.
@1After100 I had a very similar experience with this song. I was alone in my room listening to the radio and it was like the whole world was asleep, but in this song I heard my own dreams and hopes for my life. It was so beautiful to me. I still feel the same way when I listen to it.
Romance and love were in the air when I first heard this song. The romance and love is long gone, but I still listen to Cyndi sing this song when I want to take a walk down memory lane.
From that amazingly long note (3,30 to 3,41) onward is the quintessential sound of the 1980s: bittersweet romance. It was our time, the closing of the era of vinyl records, computerless homes, the pre-internet solitude, the brink of the collapse of the Soviet block and the end of the Second Cold War. Change was in the air but we were still holding the innocence of the late 70s. The brave new world that lay ahead was raw, brutal, and nihilistic. Neoconservatives had made everything a product.

I love Cindy Lauper. She kept singing later throught the 90s and even sometime ago when she and other female singers made a concert. She has a unique voice and I love her playful attitude in her videos.
Miss Cyndi lauper......truly the queen of pop .The most popular 80's icon , the most well loved artist by the younger generation in the 80's , the most unusual and colorful artist of the 80's. Cyndi is the still the best no one can imitate her true charm , charisma and her magical smile !!!!!
The first time I heard this song, I was in a refuge camp in the Philippines. Some US Marines drove by in their truck and had turned up on their radio. Right then and there I knew I wanted to be an American.
Probably my favorite Cyndi Lauper song. Wish it hadn't been a lip synch. There's a clip of her singing this song live, in concert, in the 80s where she really did sing it live. And she hit those notes at the end, LIVE.

Beautiful song from a beautiful woman. Cyndi is the real deal...a true artist who never cared much for craziness that came with her fame. She just wanted to make music and be heard. I can't understand why, almost 30 years after the fact, the Madonna vs. Cyndi debate continues. They are two totally different individuals who had (and continue to have) a vastly different idea of what constitutes success. These women aren't bashing each other...so why do their "fans" insist upon doing so?
hmm for everyone talking about Madonna on a Cyndi Lauper video, just know that you're exalting a person who is by many accounts, an egomaniac who thinks she is a divine "prophet" and generally not a very nice person. FYI.
A beautiful song; one of my favorites of the '80s. Cyndi has a new album coming out on June 22 called "Memphis Blues." You can hear her sing a great rendition of "Shattered Dreams" (not the Johnny Hates Jazz song) by doing a search here on YouTube. She sang it live at the recent NARM convention, where she received an award for creative achievement.
Cindy Lauper and All Through The Night; I just wanted to hot date Cindy, all through the night and all. Just friends is no good, naked buddies is better.
Because their raison d'etr in being involved with the music industry ARE VERY DIFFERENT. Madonna thrives in gaining popularity and chasing millions while Cyndi Lauper has been fighting ever since to stay true to her artistic voice (this has affected the way her recording company supported her releases). Ever since, Cyndi has said she 'doesn't give a hoot' with the charts as long as she can still express, perform and touch peoples' lives in a positive way. See the difference behind the numbers?
Oh well Cyndi is the one that lost out in being an icon. Madonna is very smart and has been able to exploit the music industry to her advantage. Moreover she's always been able to change with the times and her music has always been enjoyed by all.
@mcarps7. Madonna's motives for entering the recording industry is DIFFERENT from Cyndi's. What do you mean by success? Sales? Getting a lot of number 1 hits in the charts? Do you think Cyndi wanted to be an icon (she in fact said numerous times in interviews that she is an artist and not an icon which illustrates her 'base' motive)? Mcarps7, not all musical artists enter the musical industry 'purely' to be popular and earn money. Not all consumers of music like you understand this.
@arnisson - that is true, you are correct. Narcissism and self-worship was the no. 1 motivation for Madonna's drive for fame, no doubt about it. On the other hand, no other entertainer is quite entitled to her own self-worship like Madonna, for 20 years she was a non-stop hit-making machine. Even her more recent material is every bit as vital as her 'classic' material. I think Lauper is driven more by wanting to connect than Madonna (although Madonna also connects just as well incidentally).
@SCD4 I know that unlike Madonna, Cyndi does not appear in the record books for the most top 10 hits by any artist in music history. Also Madonna has more N0.1 singles and albums. Oh well, you can't win them all!
If you knew anything about Cyndi then you would know that she like many others in the music industry are in it for my than the top ten. Hence why I asked you how much you knew. Which is very little.
Maybe you will keep a husband one day are do a film people do not laugh at............Oh well, you can’t win them all. lol
@mcarps7 Objection, Your Honour. Madonna's music is dead even now as we speak. Can you name one single song by Madonna that can compare to Cyndi's performance in All through the Night? Pointed bras don't make music. All Madonna's music is empty pose. (With the exception of maybe La Isla Bonita). It's Cyndis music will live forever. Especially in the hearts of people who really understand what good music is.
@Panakeje Too bad Madonna will be remembered for at least 3 decades of music whilst Cyndi will be remembered for a very short career and always associated with 'girls just want to have fun'. By the way Madonna's albums are still selling very well internationally. When did Cyndi last have a big hit or huge selling album all over the world?
@mitalo7 I'm an old amateur musician and played with various bands since I was 15 (that was a long time ago) until the age of 42 (that was a long time ago too). And I know how musicians feel about music. Mostly they deride the general taste of average public, and even in the mainstream they themselves prefer a different kind of music. Yu're right. I should've written: to me Madonna's music is dead and always was. Cyndi Lauper's songs will talk to my heart forever. Even Girls just wanna have fun

i just saw this beautiful woman at the aqua calente hotel and casino at rancho mirage in california on april 9th 2010 she received 7 standing ovations brought down the ceiling what an amazing artist then and now at 56 years young the energy to feed the army's of the world what a powerful brilliant singer song writer performeras far as i'm concerned no one touches her alive or dead and that's fact based
what a brilliant statement !what power in her beautiful singing voice !beautiful lady in and out !thank god you could still listen to a beautiful powerful voice with a brilliant lyric
Saw her live at hammersmith london years ago. Perhaps the only singer who can sing, and sounds like the tracks. Awesome talent. closest best live artist since is Pink
Yea! One of my favorite female artist in the 80's. This song will struck and stuck in your mind once you listen to it. I don't know why. Maybe because of the quality of the song.

Most people don't realize that she is a true artist.
I wish she was still working.

FYI.
calikent 1 year ago
Cyndi's songs are just amazing! But this video light makes her eyes look really squinty. The white eye shadow doesn't help either.

There's a lot of beautiful voices but i've never heard one more beautiful than Cyndi's

Pink, not Britney spears. Mae West, not Marilyn Monroe. Cyndi Lauper, not Madonna.

Too bad Madonna outlasted her and sold millions and millions more than Cyndi. Madonna's music will live on longer than Cyndi's.

See the difference behind the numbers?
arnisson 1 year ago
Oh well Cyndi is the one that lost out in being an icon. Madonna is very smart and has been able to exploit the music industry to her advantage. Moreover she's always been able to change with the times and her music has always been enjoyed by all.

@mcarps7
Out lasted, why is Cyudi dead lol lol
SCD4 1 year ago
Not all consumers of music like you understand this.
arnisson 1 year ago
@arnisson - that is true, you are correct. Narcissism and self-worship was the no. 1 motivation for Madonna's drive for fame, no doubt about it. On the other hand, no other entertainer is quite entitled to her own self-worship like Madonna, for 20 years she was a non-stop hit-making machine. Even her more recent material is every bit as vital as her 'classic' material. I think Lauper is driven more by wanting to connect than Madonna (although Madonna also connects just as well incidentally).

Yes it is funny. Who would've thought that Madonna would've lasted longer than any other 80's artist and still going!

@mcarps7
Dont know much about Cyndi do you......lol
SCD4 1 year ago
@SCD4 I know that unlike Madonna, Cyndi does not appear in the record books for the most top 10 hits by any artist in music history. Also Madonna has more N0.1 singles and albums. Oh well, you can't win them all!
mcarps7 1 year ago
@mcarps7
If you knew anything about Cyndi then you would know that she like many others in the music industry are in it for my than the top ten. Hence why I asked you how much you knew. Which is very little.
Maybe you will keep a husband one day are do a film people do not laugh at............Oh well, you can’t win them all. lol

Will it. What you have a crystal ball like a £5 fortune teller at the fair. lol
SCD4 1 year ago
@mcarps7 Objection, Your Honour. Madonna's music is dead even now as we speak. Can you name one single song by Madonna that can compare to Cyndi's performance in All through the Night? Pointed bras don't make music. All Madonna's music is empty pose. (With the exception of maybe La Isla Bonita). It's Cyndis music will live forever. Especially in the hearts of people who really understand what good music is.
Panakeje 1 year ago
