Haha, I was there on the first day of filming for Conan, and I seriously thought that that was going to be were the guest came out from (the stairs). I don't know, at the time it just looked like it would be pretty awesome if they came downstairs to join Conan at the desk.

@RayChiTown I would guess that they use the other (smaller) set of stairs on the opposite side of the band stage. Watch closely and you'll see them. I would also venture a guess that the band comes from that side, which is why they never use the stairs that they're talking about in this scetch. But I could be wrong. Sadly, I've never been to a live Conan taping, so I can't possibly know for sure. =(

@fsufan1680 I can't see any stairs on the other side. Not to the back row. We never see the band enter or leave, so I still think the back row would use those stairs.  Unless they come from behind the curtain. I don't know.

@RayChiTown Upon reviewing this video again, you're right. The step(s) on the left side don't go to the back row. I would bet they come from behind the curtain that's directly behind the keyboard player. Wherever they're coming from, I just assume they don't use those stairs on a regular basis... or why would anyone have even thought to make a "Things we never use" sketch in the first place? Are they really having to stretch so far for material already over there at the new show? =)
