Very beautiful place nothing like where I am from! Just mountains and trees where I live! LOL, but it looks really cool, a friend of the family told me that everyone there is sooo nice, and its a very safe place to live, not just for locals but for everyone. Would love to visit some day.

I'm British and was there for the majority of my childhood, living in Riyadh was a safe as living here in London. when there I always thought the compounds were more dangerous, one was bombed around 2002 not far from my house. they are always targeted by extremists because of the large international comm . no expats we knew lived in one. but we visited the leisure centres in the main DQ often.

I used to live in Saudi Arabia in the 1980's so actually he's right compound life was fun. At the time there were many Americans and British(about 80% of the non-local population). The rest were other Europeans( a lot of Greeks) or other Arab nations ( Egyptians and Lebanese along with Yemenis.I lived in Jeddah and those were some great times. People were a lot friendlier back then. Life was good in Saudi at the time as long as you followed the laws. No alcohol, no porn, no drugs.

@PoseidonHermes - The compounds don't really increase security from bombings (compounds have been hit before), it's more to do with culture. On the compounds some rules are relaxed and it's easier for foreigners to adjust, and thus make them more willing to work in KSA. SARAMCO compounds used to be exempt from the ban on women driving, for example. It's just to minimise culture shock, and so retain staff, lower turnover, and moderate hardship allowances.

I worked as Middle East sales rep for a major UK arms manufacturer in the 90s/00s. It was interesting & fantastically well-paid, but some elements disturbed me.
We were taken to a restaurant one night & a young guy serving us accidentally spilt water on my suit. I maybe complained a little too much- the next thing my host spoke to the owner & the guy was marched out, crying & protesting. I was later told he was sacked & sent to a horrible offshore terminal with a sky-high suicide rate.

Oh i miss Sharbatley Village life. life is not cool in UK anymore. Yea anything possible inside compound. 3/4 times in a year you will find late night party with indoor Disco, Wine, semi naked woman. you will never believe that happen in saudi arabia but it does. funny thing is even police and army guard the compound.

I used to live in Saudi Arabia in the 1980's so actually he's right compound life was fun. At the time there were many Americans and British(about 80% of the non-local population). The rest were other Europeans( a lot of Greeks) or other Arab nations ( Egyptians and Lebanese along with Yemenis.I lived in Jeddah and those were some great times. People were a lot friendlier back then. Life was good in Saudi at the time as long as you followed the laws. No alcohol, no porn, no drugs.
