Something that I use the whammy for in the guitar hero games is for the sections of the song that use the whammy in real life. For example on say welcome to the jungle when the pitch continues to drop although you hold down the same fret that's a whammy note or any of the held notes on Knights of cydonia use the whammy as well. I agree that those who use it and make the song sound like crap need to stop. I've learned this through actually playing guitar.
