I too used to use the term but finally realized why I got those funny sideways looks... like I was dropping the "F Bomb" or the "N Bomb" in polite company.
I do hang with some Educated/Sophisticated Mexicans who do understand it that way... but they would be called "ultra sensitive" by some.

nice video ... but an unfortunate choice of words for the title... Gringo is a very derogatory and racist term, kind of like using the "N" word.
