Pennsylvanians know that blacks are locked out of most of rural Pennsylvania's economy. They just arent hired for shit. Dont believe me. Take a dark skin down there with 20 degrees in anything from advanced physics, to engineering, to comp sci and then start filling out applications. He/She will be lucky if they get to mop floors at a burger joint.
I think it is very unfortunate that CNN portrayed Johnstown in this way -- old, dying, delapitated, and ugly. It was clearly their intent to support the story of the people who live here - and Murhta's comments about racists. You could probably go to corners of almost every town in America - and find video like in this story. What a shame -- because Johnstown and the people here are so much more than this...
As someone who grew up in PA--I have to agree with the general sentiment of the area being shown (of course that doesn't include everyone and the clip illustrates that).
I may agree with the possibility that "you could probably go to corners of almost every town in America" but I think the greater shame is that the reality is not closer to the vision of where all of America should be in the 21st Century in regards to their thoughts and feelings towards race relations.
I miss Murtha
