This is one of the greatest movies ever made. The famous Jesuit philosopher once wrote, and this movie surely speaks of those thoughts which were. "... for the ones with great difficulty and no clear evidence of success plot away at the task of awakening in just a few men, a small spark of faith of hope and of charity." Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam

"... for the ones with great difficulty and no clear evidence of success plot away at the task of awakening in just a few men, a small spark of faith of hope and of charity." Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam
Many years ago I and my fellow school mates were herded into the nearest cinemas to watch this movie, 'so be it' i thought - what do you expect when you go to a christian school hey. During the movie, a thought crossed my mind; "why are we watching a movie that is saying: 'hey, believe in our religion, but don't worry as you're all going to die very soon as a result of that very belief'". I'm not sure that was a good selling point myself. However, the music continues to be a haunting favorite.
@tjack003 Religion lost me a long time ago so "selling points" don't work on me. Philosophical reasons do. We all die because we are mortals. I think the movie is trying to say it is what you live for and what your willing to die for that matters. For me dying to protect innocents is a noble death. I'm going to die anyway so I might as well make it count for something like protecting the weak and inncocent instead of one of the other million or so less noble reasons I could die.
Thats one of the causes tahn i admire to Jesuits. GREAT MUSIC GREAT PICTURE, aamazing landscapes, picture and direction and This film didn't win any Oscar. What injustice, thts the justice and the true of this world.
@perseopenelope this Film is inconvinient for people, mainy from Europe. It remind EUROPEAN colonialism (first holocaust, whole big countries in Wester Europe have this on their consience). I went to a Jesuit school and the headmaster took us all (about 1200 boys) to the cinema in '87 to watch the film. I enjoyed the movie, but the best part is the music.
@shop3400 I am also proud to say that I was taught/trained by the Jesuits to think. They were my best teachers and I long miss those GENTLE MEN! To many, RIP. Hey, I became a good doctor; your efforts were not in vain.
his music shines brighter than the movies he made it for in the first place. and there were quite a few brilliant movies! (this being one of them) got to love the untouchables as well
how is an upside down cross "evil" when the upside down cross originated as a sign of humility. Saint Peter chooses to be a martyr upside down, because he doesn't deserve to die the way jesus did. I'm not a fucking christian, and even I know that.
@Rao665 You are correct. A lot of people don't realize that the upside down cross was used by Christians for over a millennium before the movie 'Rosemary's Baby' adopted it as symbol of Satan. Churches named after St. Peter will often have an upside down cross to commemorate his martyrdom.
Same goes with the Swastika, and the way people view it. Pop culture seems to ruin and destroy old knowledge. I think even in some pictures of the Pope and the Vatican, you will still see the upside down cross.
and there I saw a child , it was my son , and I cryied , Thank you Lord For every minute of my life , for every picture in my mind of my child , THANK YOU
Not to mention John Williams has been accused by many that he borrowed or even stole other people's work. Just google "John William stole" and you'll see many hits. You do that same for Morricone and nothing would come up. It shows Morricone is much more original. By the way, I stopped watching Oscars few years ago.
Oscars is stupid. For example, the movie Departed got the best picture but the film that it's adapted from (copied/stole would be the better word) didn't even get nominated for the best foreign film when I have read that many that watched both preferred the original. There are lots of politics and bias involved in Oscar. I personally think Ennio Morricone had produced more beautiful music than John Williams but one important thing going for John is he's American while Mr Morricone is not.
The Academy should award an Oscar to Composer Ennio Morricone the Lifertime Achievement Award . Are the judges deaf and blind. Composer Morricone is a genius!
A soundtrack collector friend said he read an interview once given by a director who comissioned Morricone to score his film, and was quoted as saying to the Maestro "I don't want any of your crap that you come out with now and again" refering to some of Ennio's, shall we say, more idiosyncratic, quirky compositions. The score was duly composed and presented to said director, who was so blown away by it, he offered his sincere appologies for ever doubting him. Humble pie my friend, humble pie

I am so speechless. This piece made me cry my eyes out. It gives you that emotional feeling. For me, it brought my little sisters memory back to me, may she R.I.P.
If this has ever happened to you, then you're sure to know that feeling that 'Gabriel's Oboe' gives to you. I could listen to this song over a thousand times and not be bored. It's truly, by all accounts, the most beautiful piece you're ever likely to hear. So hold on to this piece everyone, cherish it with all your heart.
@mojomanist quiet incredible alright. That part was played at my teenage best friends funeral 21 years ago.Everytime I hear it I think of him.I've never been able to name or describe the senses or feelings of that part.
@Thomasl777 You are wrong, Oscar and Nobel have great meaning, they are formidable brands, just like Coke and Pepsi, and have major impact on the wealth and/or power of the people who control them.
How could you not like his music? This man is brilliant, and this has got to be the most beautiful and moving soundtrack out there. 26 dislikes? shame on you people
ONE OF THE GREATEST COMPOSERS OF ALL TIME.BLESSED TO STILL HAVE HIM AND YEAAAAH WHY NO OSCAR?oh well he doesnt need a statue we all know he should have one
The sad part is this movies is based on a true story..3 or 400 years after the fact..tears still come to me when I think of those people who died so long ago

He won the Honorary Oscar on 26 FEB 2007. He composed more than 400 Motion Pictures Soundtracks in 45 years. He's probably the most representative Italian Artist in the world!

Gandhi never got a Nobel Peace prize. Many warmongers and mass murderers did. Oscars, Nobel Prize... are meaningless. Just enjoy the music!
Thomasl777 11 months ago
@Thomasl777 You are wrong, Oscar and Nobel have great meaning, they are formidable brands, just like Coke and Pepsi, and have major impact on the wealth and/or power of the people who control them.

How could you not like his music? This man is brilliant, and this has got to be the most beautiful and moving soundtrack out there. 26 dislikes? shame on you people

@letter2elise
26 dislikes but notice that there are 1,310 likes - that shows there are only a few insignificant bottom dwellers.

He won an honorary Oscar in 2007 presented by Clint Eastwood.
Morricone and Alex North are the only composers to receive the honorary Oscar since the award's introduction in 1928.

He won the Honorary Oscar on 26 FEB 2007. He composed more than 400 Motion Pictures Soundtracks in 45 years. He's probably the most representative Italian Artist in the world!
