Schaeffer, for the most part, is correct when he says the Republican party no longer represents Conservatism anymore and has become a religious cult in itself. During college at UOP I too was a right wing Republican thinking America could do no wrong. Now those with discernment can see that both Democrats and Republicans are controled by the same global elite with the same basic agenda thus creating a false left/right paradigmn. If you vote don't be loyal to your party. Be loyal to Jesus.
In my humble opinion he's simply making a case against extremism in any shape, form or fashion when it is directed against others that don't follow their beliefs. Some extremism is a personal thing. Teenagers love to be extreme in their ways, take the X games. But it's not the X games with some wild young skateboarder saying those that don't believe and skate like us are wrong to not skate. So I think it's pretty fair the way describes his argument and I guess his book which I haven't read yet.
I don't get it. Isn't atheism a lack of belief in a god? Why does he refer to it as some sort of religion? Its just a word that says you don't believe in a god like theism says you believe in a god.
oh, I think I get it. there is nothing more dangerous than someone who thinks they understand something.
Let evolution into your heart, and realize all the secular reasons for forgiveness, like reduced heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and increased dick size.....................You're going to need it!!!!!!!!!!!
Christians in America are not violent. And Frank misrepresents them as wanting to bring on the end of the world. They may believe the end is near, but they are not trying to cause it. They see the end as out of their hands and are calling people to get spiritually ready. That is all. John F Kennedy was not shot by a Christian but by a Communist. President Reagan (a Republican) was not shot by a religious nut. Martin Luther King was shot by a Democrat. Abe Lincoln was shot by a peace activist.
@Entropy56 MLK was shot by an old style Dem which also made up the old south until someone woke up and said the Bible is wrong about owning ppl. As Lee Atwater used to say, you can't say N***er, N***er any more so the "southern strategy" now needs metaphors like socialist, commie, Marxist Muslim, or "take back ah liberties & guns & exercise our 2nd Amendment rights" & bla bla bla. I call Tea Partiers Tea Birchers. Fred Koch co-founded the JBS in 58 David Koch $ PFA which $ Tea Birchers.
Though I am non-religious, I would like to hear some specifics that Frank thinks are good policies. Is he a Libertarian? European Socialist? What exactly? I don't care what people personally believe, but I do care what they do in public and what laws they are imposing on me. I like Sara Palin as a person and agree generally with the Tea Party movement because they are about freedom. Socialism is slavery and if that is what Dawkins and Schaeffer want then they are my enemy.
Hitchens is so wrong about Iraq, I wish he would change his position. Hussein was not an Islamic fundamentalist. Iraq was not connected to 9/11. There were no weapons of mass destruction. Even the smartest people can be wrong sometimes.
Dawkins is more open-minded than Frank portrays. Dawkins doesn't insist life lacks value or you are relegated to immoral hell of some sort unless you renounce religion. His premise is that faith is irrational and can lead to violent rhetoric or physcial violence and drive cult-like group think acts that harm greater society or those perceived as outsiders (war) despite all its art, music, architecture and solemn rituals. The analogy between religious righties and all such atheists is weak.
If he wants to know what Hitchens' problem is with Islam in the Middle East, he could read one of Hitchens' books or dozens of articles. To pretend that Hitchens' has no valid argument is specious indeed.
@Lambieschmoo As Laura says, Frank is creating a false equivalency. The tone is not "very much the same on both sides." I think Frank is well intentioned and I'm glad he's speaking out against the Christian fascists, but to say that they, the christian fascists, are equal to Dawkins is just factually incorrect.

How do you go from the statement, "Don't shove your religion down my throat," to, "Everyone needs to live their life without god"?

@Entropy56 Christians cause violence by encouraging homophobia. I hold them responsible for promoting this hatred.
