  • He is reminding the character Desire of the comic sandman

  • Momeee !

  • I was there!!!!!

  • @suzej22 I fucking envy you

  • killer bassline. I can play that.

  • bono iz hooooot lol

  • My favourite song of all time. It means a lot to me.

  • Great song, only the true U2 fans truly appreciate this song for what it stands for and how good it is. Period.

  • even u2 "fans" slagging them off now about this tour better than the last one blah blah blah

lets just apprieciate that for 30 years they have been the best kick ass rock band out there "PERIOD"

  • @camboy38

    well said there!!

  • Cant anyone see the bueatyu of the song, and stop breaking it down, I'm sure they did not Write so you your small minds could break it down

  • I agree. I always liked the chorus inthis version better than the studio recording. That extra chord just lifts it so much :)

  • I think that one of whole things why this song is better in LIVE performance is this:

They change chords in chorus (Midnight...)

    In studio version is: F#, C#, H

    Live version is: F#, C#, Esmi, H

  • Zooropa Tour was better then the 360 Bullshit tour. I'm glad I was part of it.

U2 is not the same anymore

  • @neckisstiff Amen brother , This tour was fkn immense...for me U2 should of retired after PoP....Pop was the cherry ontop of the mountain for me...it was all downhill from there..

  • @needley Did you go to the "All that you can leave behind tour" or the "Elevation" tour? I did, and they were about the same

  • @neckisstiff Have you been to 360? I was, and it BLEW MY MIND. I think it's awesome, you can't expect them to come up with another Zoo TV at the age of 50.

It was called Zoo TV Tour, not Zooropa Tour, by the way. Get your facts straight.

  • @DontLookAtTheTurtle Yeah, I went to the 360 Tour and it sucked ass !!! I've been to the Zoo Tv tour, PopMart Tour, Elevation Tour, Vertigo Tour. And it doesn't matter if I called it the Zooropa Tour, Zoo TV Tour same fucking thing. U2's last album was a joke... that's why i downloaded it, instead of actually paying money for the CD. Nothing is better the Zoo TV tour PERIOD. End of Story !!!!

  • @neckisstiff Id disagree with that but everyone has there own opinion.

  • @neckisstiff Why would you want them to be the same? Same is a death knell to any artist. Push, push, push. You've got SAME w/ every other group! Who has stayed together for 30 years - experimenting, failing, soaring? Appreciate them for who they are then, now, and will be. You liked the Lemon era, someone else the 360, and another their genesis. U2 is who they are because they are always changing and yet remain the same.

  • MIDNIGHT IS WHEN THE DAY BEGINS.. lovely anthem!

  • EXCELENTE TEMA...BONO TE AMO

  • Bloody hell he was in good voice

  • Zoo tv is 20 this year, expect they'll do something to mark it at Glastonbury this year. Not sure he'd still be able to sing like this though!

  • @brettsambrook Hasn't his voice improved after he quit smoking? It's then years ago he quit so his lung should be in better shape than at the time this concert.

  • @MissMael Except Bono is now 51 years old and has had another 20 years of wear and tear on his vocal cords since Zoo TV.

He sounds much much better this tour than he did during the Elevation tour back in 2001 though.

  • this sounds radically different from that what i've got on my dvd and the zootv live sydney cd

  • I love this my fav u2 song, Bono does gay awesome, his voice is at the top of his game

  • Fuck I love this song!

  • the real devil never wears gold lamé suits..... ;)

  • played this album, Zooropa, to death driving to UC Irvine and Hollywood/LA during the summer of 93. U2 was brave to be so experimental with this album. too bad it wasn't commercially popular.

  • they do this reli well.... bono sounds great. no wierd crackaling... good ole hicthed voice..

  • I'm not even a U2 fan despite seeing them four times in concert but I believe the Achtung Baby/Zooropa Tour was the finest of the 90s. Nothing compares to it. It's like the Born In The USA tour of the 90s - and both were tinged with a good deal of lyrical irony. For me, the problem is that Bono set a standard with this tour that he could never find again, but better once than never. Lemon is a very unique piece of music I find very fascinating, and unusual for U2 music.

  • Even live they played the edited version of this song? That's a shame. I can remember loving the album version of this song and then being really pissed when they edited it for radio and MTV.

  • Mr Macphisto at his finest I LOVE this song Thumbs up to the person who said you have to be a hard core fan to understand their music ..This one is in fact about the devil and temptation and I love how it leads into with or without you! I wont tell you what that song is about but true fans know!

  • I love this song and would love to see it live when i see them at the east lansing stadium. I honestly don't think that Bono would be able to sing this song anymore they way it's sang here. It's like having Geddy Lee singing something from like A Farewell to Kings.

  • this would be really funny if Bono was actually dressed as a Lemon.

    LOVE U2!!!

  • Nice background on this song, it has made me like it more.

Zooropa is one of my favourite albums esp. The Wanderer, which I read was meant to be a joke.

  • The cross from Lemon to WOWY is my all-time-favourite. That gives me the creeps..

  • pozriLA La som tu irbis inocent on facebook

  • I love Lemon

  • Zooropa is one of a kind! Super album!!!!

  • @2:35... "DADDY'S GONNA PAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYEAH!!!!!"

  • What is Bono singing during the first chorus while Edge is singing the word "midnight"? I can't make it out, and its not on the official lyrics.

  • @TriplexBergin Being pedantic, it was heard again at concerts as a remix of it was played over the PA prior to the Lemon/Second Stage performance on Popmart, that doesn't really count though. I didn't realise they performed it so few times. Great how it ended up on the DVD. The vox are well high up in this version. Amazing suff.

  • Wow, Bono's voice was really brought to the front in this mix!

  • oir a u2 me hace sentir mejor persona y disfrutar de esta vida gracias

  • Off with the horns, on with the show.

  • Bonos voice, the whole of the tour, sonically amazing.

  • ahhh!!! no

  • wtf where they thinking i love u2, but no!!!

  • @milosmoky But yes!

  • One of U2's greatest songs..around their most interesting period , musically (the brilliant "Achtung Baby " & "Zooropa" lps)..this was U2 shaking off the boringly "earnest" tag & reinventing their "sound".U2 were never "sexier" than during this period..pity they dropped their nuts after the (relative) failure of the "Pop" lp and reverted back to the 80's rock anthem/balladry on their "All that you can't leave"..a backward step in my opinion..what a shame..'Lemon" shits all over "Beautiful Day"

  • @machiaveliyoohoo What you said, I wish they would revisit this era. Still, Beautiful Day is better than most pop shit.

  • great guitar effects

  • It's so unusual. Such a great and awesome song was played only 10 times. It makes it even more special and sublime. But I'd love to hear it live!

  • Bring back Lemon! I think it would suit this tour very well. Play it after Unforgettable Fire or Ultraviolet

  • Lemon, a love song and about his mom, one of my all time favorites! Never have i seen it live. It's beautiful!

  • U2! .. play this song live again!

  • Big U2 fan and this is probably my favorite song...my favorite album for sure. They are great to have grown into their music so well...one of the best, no doubt.

  • Would have been a nice suprise for the 360 tour 2010. Unfortunately the havent rehearsed it yet, but they had some suprises during 2009 as well. Well I keep my fingers crossed that I'll hear Lemon live in 2010!!!

  • Love U2 favourite band ,but this is their worst song, soundslike a crap scissors sisters song, actually all scissors sisters songs are shite.

Ultra violet was usually the encore and that is still a top tune live as showed last year on the 460 tour,

  • Lyrically best U2 song ever.

  • uwielbiam tą piosenkę ! :D

    U 2 < 3

  • This song is just fucking weird...

  • @Duckcedes yes that's what makes it great. And the falsetto's in this is unreal.

  • 'off with the horns, on with the show'

  • This is just awesome.Bono's vocals sends shivers down my spine at the Midnight, midnight part.Love larry's snare sound fro this era too with the chorus/flanger on it.This is U2 at their best.

  • i wonder if bono could pull this off today

  • david bowie?

  • I love this song so much. I'd be really cool if U2 returned to the style they had in Actung Baby/Pop/Zooropa for an album.

  • This dvd is the best thing I own

  • Damn Edge could carry a mule on his back, a mule with a full load!

  • I like a guy who at various stages in his life can pull off a mullet, long hair, and make up. Bono is one of those.

  • hallelujah bono . most passionate voice you could ever wish to hear

  • @idontthinksodave You're so right!

  • I wonder ow heavily Eno influenced this song and if that is why it's so layered and amazing. It's still one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and Zooropa is still too under-appreciated.

  • @JLoveBomb Actually, Eno influenced it quite a lot. Bono wanted to write a Prince song, and The Edge (with Eno helping) wanted to do something else. Those two separate ideas ended up being this song here.

  • Shut up, ok? ._.

  • Comment removed

  • 8-)

  • That's a shame. I don't think you appreciate the beauty of this song or how difficult it is to replicate live. Lyrically its Bono best, emotionally singing in reference his mother and at the fragility of manhood. But everyone will have their own preference in taste and if you prefer other U2 songs I totally understand. However I think this style should at least be appreciated because of its uniqueness to the music world.

  • @TriplexBergin Well said. Bono's vocals on this track are breathtaking. I heard this song was also about film/cinema and how it constructs images and identities. Bono was fascinated with media and global cultures and communication at this time. Your interpretation is true too, I think Bono has double meanings in some of his songs. Cheers.

  • @TriplexBergin definitely in my top 5 U2 songs.

  • GOD. Give me a break. Makeup doesn't lessen anybody's talent, and neither does being "supergay", whatever that is. It's called theater, and performers have used makeup for centuries while doing it. I haven't said this in years but- Sucks to be you. So glad I won't be missing out on stuff like David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust.

    Or Bono as Satan.

  • @steelphantom71 what's hilarious is you're 39 years old so I think it's safe to say you listend to alot of "super gay" bands as a kid. Macphisto is one of the greatest stage personas ever and it's a shame people like you think it's "super gay".

  • Zooropa the best

  • INSANE! I fell for their music because of this song and this performance. I wonder what they were on when they did that record ;)

  • LEMOHOOON!

  • It is one of the greatest songs of U2, love zooropa actually ....kind of prefer the experimental U2 than the classic or the latest sound...

this live version of lemon is fantastic.... much better than the record version (thats usual in U2 they are a live band) and now, crossing fingers to see U2 live in LIMA PERU

  • @alfoperu I agree. it was performed amazingly as most of the songs in this concert

  • Today MacPhisto's Gold Suit and platform shoes are in the Entrance Hall of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio.

  • just made my day

  • 2nd row baby

    best concert of all time.

  • Oddest song - yes! One of their best! MOST DEFINITELY!

  • I like your description of this masterpiece ;)

  • siiiiiiiiiiiiiii mc phisto sos lo mas!

  • mc phisto lo mas grande q hay!!!!!!. bono sos el mejorrrrr, solo vos creas un personaje tan adorable!!!

  • Gosh.... thanks.

    (Karina is cracking up)

  • Love Zooropa. I think any true U2 fan does.

  • @esornad so right.zoo tv era is THE BEST.its like when david bowie recorded the albums in berlin and the were the best

i dont know what happened to them in berlin but it was something good

  • @esornad No one understands Zooropa or Pop unless they are hardcore fans of U2.

  • @Bassmate I'm a casual fan of U2 and the only albums I really dig are Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Joshua Tree... in that order

  • que grandes! =)

  • a hard one to sing !!!!!

only one who can do this ..: Bono !

  • love the falsetto! :0) ah, I miss Macphisto!

  • I think this one greatest...

  • EXTRAORDINARIO............

  • I saw them live in concert in Raleigh, NC last Saturday for the first time ever and was totally blown away! Bono and the boys have as much charisma and energy now as they did back then when this video was shot. I just wish they would've played this song and Bad :(

  • was there too man. it was amazing.

  • remember going to this tour and being completly blown away.

  • he sounds like prince in this song.

  • it is mentioned in Bill Flanagan's U2 At The End Of The World that this was a mix of a Prince tribute with a Talking Heads tribute. good call. i had to read about it to make the connection. can't believe i missed it. a great driving song incidentally....

  • lemon was performed live only 9 times??

  • I was mistaken - they played it 10 times, not 9. Think it took them a while to figure out how to play it live by which time ZooTV was coming to an end. The video/DVD isn't really a truthful reflection of the tour in that Ultra-Violet & Desire were the encore songs rather than Daddy's Gonna Pay & Lemon.

  • @TriplexBergin really! I saw them do Lemon at Zoo TV Brisbane 1993 - lucky then

  • why their oddest album?? I think it's a great one

  • MACPHISTO IS A BADASSS HAHAHAAHAHAHA

  • U2 are pioneers

  • is edge actually playing anything here? it's hard to match his motions to anything in the song

  • He is playing, yes, it's just the type of delay and all of the effects he's using that makes it hard to see!

  • sweet, glad to hear that. this is an awesome song, Zooropa's my favourite U2 album right now

  • he's using his guitar to play a tremolo type of echo - its the ongoing sound that sounds like a synthesizer that starts up on 0.18 - you need to be both very good and to have decent equipment for it to sound right. Another example of a tremolo is at the start of Green Day's 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'

  • solid thanks man i gotta get my guitar playin friends to try that!

  • Was it not the Sydney show that Adam missed and they had to use is guitar tech instead? This is definitely Adam?

  • Yep there were two shows, Adam missed the first, the second one was filmed.

  • Has any footage ever surfaced from the first night show?

  • not to my knowledge, not sure if there's any bootlegs from it either

  • @TriplexBergin I've never seen any. And it's only morbid curiosity that gets me looking from time-to-time. I know there's video somewhere because they used the first show to test the camera angles and cutaways for the live broadcast...

  • @modo03 Not from the first night in Sydney. The other Lemon vid I've seen is from Adelaide - great vid, the volume is low though - put in youtube dot com slash...

    watch?v=4MmcVJ7VNdE

  • ahh U2 had so much style back then but its lost now

  • MacPhisto is such a badass

  • that was the porpouse i think.. XD

  • Off with the horns, On with the show.

    Genius.

  • vraiment génial !! dommage qu'à l'époque je n'avais que 9 ans

  • Je n'avais que 2 ans!! Malheureusement, parce que cette époque était fantastique. J'adore U2.

  • My thanks to both turbomecca & stopdogginme who turned a simple but brilliant music video into a vile & unnecessary discussion on porn fitted with racial slurs. Give people freedom of speech and too often they abuse it in this manner, it's a real shame.

  • Their discussion actually made me lmao

  • u are so not american caucasion. Am I right ?

  • What cheap porn do you watch?

  • what are you gonna do with that train, strap a bomb to it and kill a bunch of innocent people ? What the fuck is a turbomecca anyway? When a bunch of Israeli's give free abortions to Islamic women?

  • child, try to be more creative with your juvenile energies. It's ok to jack off sometimes, everybody used to do it too.

  • I would not know about sitting around jack'n off watching cheap porn movies... like you , you Godless, tasteless, low IQ , should of been aborted but your mom could'nt afford it , dumbass. You have no listening quality. Obviously no one agrees with you , if you can read. Islams are primitive. Go have a drink and get some pussy if you can.

  • none of the low budget porn films available in my state sound like this. drive to Texas loser.

  • that's because your from an underpriviledged family and u don't know how ripped off you are or u would sue the public school system that retarded you.

  • lovely!!!

  • I GOT LEMON! :D

  • how is this great performance rare, its on dvd. XD

    great band!

  • I love it when he sings "Midnight....Midnight....MIDNIGHT is when the day begins..." Its fresh and different from the studio version.

  • Yeah!! there's like so many awesome layers of sound and melody. Adam's wicked bass line, the edge's guitar, the piano, edge's vocal chorus, and bono's extra bit on top. Soooo good!

  • @SatiricalTruth Nearly all of the songs in this video better than the studio version. They learnt to mix it up big time :) I can never stop watching this DVD

  • A man melts the sand so he can see the world outside...

  • This performance is from when U2 were the best live... still kick ass live but this was gold and god like...

  • I love the beginning where he hits a sour note. Very fitting... and the transition to With or Without You... extremely beautiful.

  • jak to mowil Stanisław Ochódzki...cytryne najpierw sie sciska a pozniej rżnie

  • Edge sounds amazing in this aswell!

  • 'Lemon' was such a striking departure. I still remember that I was enthralled by it when I first heard it... And I didn't even realize it was U2 until I heard Bono break into his more "normal" voice momentarily... and even then I thought maybe he was doing a guest appearance with another band or it was someone else who sounded like Bono...

When I fully realized it was in fact U2, I had nothing but respect. I've never heard a band so radically change its own sound like this before or since.

  • I agree with you about their changing their sound and looks so radically. I've been a fan since War, but I admit they kind of lost me with Zooropa. I mean, they really were ahead of the times, and it took me a while to catch up. It was'nt until POP that I was able to appreciate their creativity and I became a fan again.

They have really contribuited with taking music to new levels and uncharted territory!! BEST BAND EVER!!

  • I love watching clips from the Zoo TV Era, but there's something about Macphisto that unsettles me and creeps me out! But then again, I suppose that's the whole point of the character! When I see him doing that jittery walk and talking in that posh English accent, I have to force myself to remember that the real Bono is still inside! Great song, incredible, epic band, unmatched now and always.

  • the best U2 tour of all the time...

  • The clothes of Bono!!

  • This type of concerts are the reason of why you dont have to compare Coldplay and U2. Coldplay is not prepared for stadiums or big places.

  • Oddest song? Have you ever heard "Elvis Presley and America"? Hell, "Numb" (that precedes it on the album) is more odd. But "Lemon" is the greatest.

  • 'Elvis Presley and America' doesn't technically count as a U2 song as they performed as 'Passengers' whereas you'd have to include Gavin Friday et co. if you wanted to call it U2. I know they use 'Miss Sarajevo' live sometimes but it never appeared on what is counted as a U2 album.

  • I meant to imply that it's the oddest song relative to that album and I still think it is. Numb follows most of the U2 guidelines. Lemon is barely recognizable, Edge's guitar is in a constant tremolo and has none of his usual choppy play, Bono is singing in falsetto and occasionally tenor and as a whole the song lacks any of the post-punk age style that is still a huge influence on them, particularly when they do a song with a political message (such as in 'Zooropa' and 'Numb')

  • @TriplexBergin

Elvis presley and America was on Unforgettable fire 84' , not on Passengers.....

    peace out...

  • Embarrassing to say but I mixed it up with 'Elvis Ate America'. Still think 'Lemon' contrasted their style more than songs of the American philosophy years of the mid to late 80's. Cheers for pointing that out.

  • yea i agree Numb is super odd... but still awesome! Lemon is somewhat odd as you wouldnt expect that kind of sound from U2 during that time... but wow! still amazing tune... and this is a brilliant performance! and stop with the Coldplay comparisons! i love Coldplay too but U2 is U2!! no comparison!! xD

    she wore! lemonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!! xD

  • I agree that U2 is the best band on earth, Coldplay come in at second for me as well, im not a huge fan of No Line On The Horizon but still holds its weight, my favorite U2 albums are Achtung Baby, Zooropa, ATYCLB and Atomic Bomb.. oh of coarse Joshual Tree as well...

  • YEAHHH FOCK

U2 IS THE BEST BAND OF THE WORLD THE TOUR ZOO TV 92 and 93

    is the best tour

  • Amen

  • This tour was more like an artistic mockery from U2 to the age of multimedia and Tv domination. They are not defining the word Rock stars, they are mocking the imagery and symbolism that accompany it.This is Satyric.

  • What are you talking bout? They won awards for how creative their tour was and most U2 fans loved it.

  • STILL THE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD

  • This is my favourite U2 tour. They defined the term "rock stars".
