He goes with Ellie because he's nervous.

Ellie (who is obsessed with Nirvana in the book) is going crazy because Kurt Cobain killed himself and breaks a window at a shop.

Most of the cast comes together and has this long talk, Marcus finally starts acting like a normal teenager and Will is now an adult who has given up his cool for Rachel.
