It doesn't have a supercharger FFS. It's a normally aspirated Rover K series VHPD. It runs ~ 180 bhp (even if you have the 192 upgrade). Now if you want to hear the difference look up an exige with a supercharged K20a Honda engine.
@eggbertwaxman Yes only the S2 Elise / Exige with the Toyota engine is sold in the USA. The S1 and Rover K series engines were not compliant. Is that where the confusion has arisen? Guys in the USA have only seen the Toyota engines cars?
@imafreeman11 I suppose so, I live about 2 miles from a lotus dealer and that's what they've told me is that they all have the toyota engines. That's my bad. But I'm still not convinced that that car is naturally aspirated, that whine is just monstrous.
@eggbertwaxman one thing that i've discovered about us youtubers is we're all ignorant at some point. its only as we go on that we transition to enlightenment.
@eggbertwaxman no biggie, as long as you weren't an ass about it. if you wanna see an ignorant douche, look up JACKtheRIPP3R189's page. He's gotta be one of the biggest douches ive ever seen. seriously, who makes a list of the trolls they've destroyed on their page?
notice how little tyre squeal there is compared to 'normal' passenger cars like the STI Tommi makinen video recently posted - a quick car for the money.
I'm a federal (U.S.A. equipped) 2006 Elise owner. The D-R-I-V-E-R in this video is outstanding. You have to have some track experience (which I do) to truly appreciate his skill. Sadly, if I were on the track, I would be the oblivious driver of the Elise getting in his way. Hats off to @AMTM1980 !
Very nice driving. Is that a Exige S version ?, because I have the same engine in my Toyota, but the sissing sound is lacking (it is the atmospheric version). I am European, 38 and did some rallying in the 90's, if you want to know my background. This driving is excellent.
8 minutes 47 seconds and he still doesn't make a COMPLETE lap??? That is a slower lap time than a Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf , or a Ford Focus. Pretty sad, huh?
Smooth?
Yeah, that's it .... smooth.
The only car he passed was another Lotus with a dumbass driver. lol
@HelimanZ06 Pity you didn't see the coned off area where you have to slow down, or the bikes in the way. Is this his first lap of the ring, his 20th or 1000th? Do you know? Perhaps you can do better, although I suspect not, not with that kind of attitude. Otherwise I expect you wouldn't be so downright obnoxious... all of which points to you being both 'sad' and a 'dumbass'.
Sabine Schmitz ran the Ring almost as quick in a Ford Transit Diesel Van in traffic pretty much like the Lotus driver.
Originally I was simply commenting in response to all the posters say what a wonderful/smooth driver he was. Wonderful and smooth ... maybe; talented ... not so much.
At any rate, it is good to see you stayed on topic addressing the facts and not lowering yourself to the point of making personal attacks in order to try to get your point across.
@parlatas it's true that the 111S does have Rover's VVC cam-timing, but this is a continuously variable system and doesn't "kick in" like Totoya's VVTLi or Honda VTEC does. You can't hear it.
Also, the VHPD version of the engine in the S1 Exige has no form of variable valve/cam timing and the VHPD head has the necessary ports for VVC blanked off in the casting.
@parlatas No... it's not. You can tell from the dashboard that it's an S1, which had the Rover engine. The Toyota engine won't even fit in this model.... shows how little you know.
@LotusEliseNZ yeah man guess you are right. Its definetely S1 dashboard. And the wizzzin is comin from the diff and gear box. I know more than you think no need to insult me
@parlatas Wasn't aimed specifically at you mate, more the dozens of idiots in these comments who have persistently claimed supercharger noise when it's clearly not.
Looks very stock standard to me. Doesn't sound like the car is modified at all. I've one exactly the same as this and mine sounds identical and looks about as fast.
@makoshark40.... No, it's not. It's a Rover 1.8L K16VHPD engine. I know, I have one EXACTLY like it and mine sounds EXACTLY the same. God, you people wouldn't know what a supercharger sounded like if it jumped up and hit you in the face!
@makoshark40 well then it all comes down to whose opinion matters the most... someone who actually owns an identical car, or someone who just thinks they know what the hell they're on about.
@makoshark40 Your profile says you're a 21 year old from the US. There's about 15 of these cars in the US and I know more than half of the owners of them. The likelihood of you being an owner is about the same as the likelihood of there being a supercharger in the car in the video..... zero.
@LotusEliseNZ And there's of course no possibility that he's one of the ones you don't know? If you only know half, then that would make it a distinct possibility. Pretty sure there are more than 15 of those in th US, as Lotus have a healthy market in the states.
@gromit37 there's the remotest of possibilities, sure.... but it's very very remote, and I would not say "distinct".
As for being "pretty sure" that there are more than 15 of them in the US, you'd be wrong. The S1 Exige as shown in the video was never road-legal in the USA and only 15 were ever imported for track use only. The S1 Exige in the video is a LOT more rare than the more common S2, which is currently made (601 S1s made versus over 6000 S2s).
Great camera angle! Gives an astonishing sensation of speed... and you were giving it hard, man! Ultra-fast! What is the aprox. top speed you got on the fast sections?
Man, the power to weight ratio is sure apparent here, the car builds revs really quick in every gear. Looks like a lot of fun when your driving a balanced car like that. Nice smooth driving.
Man...this looks like such a rush. I wish I had the money to get a car that is fit for this track and to actually get to Germany to try it. Nice driving man
are envious of you, I would like to run myself Nurburgring! But without money and without car does not go anywhere. however compliments you're an excellent pilot. Sorry for my English misconduct

Any car and driver that can post an under 8 minutes run at the Ring is AWSUM !! Great videos AMTM1980,, Thanks much !!
I drove there in 1986 in a VW Golf GTI it was an awesome experience, I have quite a few miles on that piece road. It is not near as easy as it looks on these videos, you have to drive it a while before you can run hard on it, It takes a while to learn the track where to break and gas it for each corner etc. But it is definintly the ultimate driving experience.
That isn't turbo whine you can hear its transmission whine, the gearbox is right behind your head, something like a MR2. If you think its slow you should try the same kind of driving in an american musclecar, you'll find it much more of a handful and way slower through the corners.
gr8 car and top notch awsome and simpy spectacular driving!!
however, this is just a small issue i have with the car, u can see the car is fast and balanced in the corners, BUT on the str8 @ 5:00 onwards, it seems slow, if it were faster on the str8 aswell, it will simply be unbeatable.
Nope sorry mate its not! Rover Power there! the 1.4L 1.6L and 1.8L K series inline 4 all alloy engines are beauties! 400Whp from those (1.8L) when southern motor works gets their hand on them
I love Lotus, but how do you think a V8 Esprit would do on the Nurburgring? Doubt it would be as nimble in the bends as an exige, but there seems to be a lot of straights on the track, so I'd hope the V8 would catch up. I've driven an Esprit and Elise but not the Exige so I've no idea how they compare.
do you downshift with heel-toe or are you not braking while downshift? i heard the pedals of elise/exige are not good for heel-toe

@HOLYHECKITSPAUL Lotus don't but there are plenty that have been converted with supercharged K20a Honda engines out of a Civic Type R (like mine).
Anyway this video at the Nurbergring is of an S1 Exige which has the original Rover VHPD engine, not an S2 which uses the Toyota lump.

Nice driving! The car eats most turns as if they are not even there. I like how he passes the cycles too as if they were parked.

but the car is rear drive rear engine man and it does not go fast

How big is the driver? He looks pretty cramped in that car (I hear its funny to watch somebody over 5'8" climb in)

That turbo delivers power later than I get to class.
MisterSmartalick 3 years ago
That isn't turbo whine you can hear its transmission whine, the gearbox is right behind your head, something like a MR2. If you think its slow you should try the same kind of driving in an american musclecar, you'll find it much more of a handful and way slower through the corners.

gr8 car and top notch awsome and simpy spectacular driving!!
however, this is just a small issue i have with the car, u can see the car is fast and balanced in the corners, BUT on the str8 @ 5:00 onwards, it seems slow, if it were faster on the str8 aswell, it will simply be unbeatable.
but 5 stars 4 ur driving! 3.5 stars 4 the car.

If you're gonna drive a V8, than who cares?

I was trying to start a civilized debate, but if thats beyond you.

Good lap , Very neat ,Just need to loose the rear view mirror, as they are no use in an exige anyway.

8:37 bridge to gantry isn't that quick for an Exige. It's a good video though and a nice little save coming out of Wipperman.

Neither S1 or S2 Exiges had a supercharger as standard, although the S2 has had several Exige-based special editions with superchargers, 240R etc.
Interior looks like an S1 but I'm not too sure. Anyone sure if its S1 or S2?
The whine might be from a straight-cut gearbox perhaps? I know that Lotus Sport offer them for some of their cars...
Oh and nice lap too.
