  • im 14 years old and i play violin and guitar but i have never played piano. for chrismas my parents gave me a keyboard, its no so good as a real piano but its enough for me. i neves thought i could play Imagine or Hey Jude but you explain it so good that with practic it can be very easy to learn. i love your videos and they are really useful. Happy Holydays from Chile and keep as this. PD: I would love if you can do a tutorial of Live and Let Die of Paul McCartney and Wings :)

  • @dsuper19 That's great, congratulations on learning the songs. You have quite the musical talent to play violin, guitar, and to be able to pick up the songs I've done as well. Happy holidays to you in Chile! Keep up the great work!

  • well my left ear enjoyed this video

  • Hi John, you would die laughing if you could see the look of sheer terror on my face after watching just the opening minute of this particular tutorial :))

  • @chalyminx lol, perfectly understandable, this one's a bit of a challenge! :-)

  • Aw This piano is so adorable! :D

Gaaaaaahhh. I just want to pick it up and carry it around in my pocket. ^_^

  • I thought the left hand rolled with the right hand?

  • @pianojohn113 eres un chingonazo mi hermano saludos desde mexico df me estoy tomando un tequila a tu salud

  • @poncharales2010 A huevo.

  • eres un chingonazo mi hermano muchas felicidadez saludos desde mexico df

  • estan bn tu videos me an ayudado mucho sigue asi

  • FANTASTIC! I have learnt nearly all of my Beatles songs from you, your tutorials are the easiest to understand on the whole of youtube, thanks and keep up the beatles songs :)

  • i've always wanted to learn this solo! Thanks for making this tutorial to show me how, i have learnt nearly all of my Beatles songs on piano from you, thanks and keep it up :)

  • I've just bought me a piano about 3weeks ago and am determined to learn.

your videos have been very helpfull! i've learned lady madonna and this solo (though not yet at pace) and was wondering if you could do the rest of the song?

    keep up the good work!

  • @Bleddyn38 I'd love to do a tutorial on the rest of the song, just haven't had a chance to put one together yet. It's another one that's a little difficult to teach on a video, but it can be done. Glad you liked this one, thanks!

  • Awesome! Could you do a tutorial for the whole song?

  • you know what...I would love to go to your place someday and just listen to your piano skills for a very long time. next time I'm in the US I'll contact you. I promise I'm not dangerous or something like that.

  • I don't play keyboards, but I would have been interested to see the song's intro chords, as I've always loved how they start things off....

  • @dumont1957 Yeah, it's a typically great Beatle-style intro. I'll probably post something on this song eventually. The intro really just goes from a strummed Bb chord to an Ab then down to Eb.. winds up on Bb for the start of the vocals.

  • John!! I have half of this done now!!! :D I'm so excited to finish it. I'm not sure but did you post the whole rest of the song on here too? Just asking :D Haha Seeing Paul in concert just made my life complete... seriously O_O

  • @BeatlesFanCharsh I didn't post the rest of this song, but I might some time soon. It's a little harder to teach than some of their other songs, for some reason. Congrats on learning it!

  • @pianojohn113 Thank you!! Even if you can't, this is good enough, but if you do, FANTASTIC. I love how you post so many different songs!! I LOVE The Beatles, they are my favourite band!! <3

  • So, I cant read music...I dont know anything about Piano ...Yet I love to play..and I can play thanks to you...Plus it appears youre a HUGE Beatles fan!...Just gotta say...youre the best!

  • @pianojohn113 definatly!!! :D

  • AH and guess what else? I'm seeing Paul in concert on Monday!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!! :D

  • I am now learning this!! So excited!!! :D

  • i cant get any sound with this one either>>

  • this jimboggia guy knows alot

  • you are a champ great job

  • Pianojohn113, I can tell you I'm a huge Beatles fan and watching your tutorials is very impressive. In fact I feel like I'm watching one them play. You are spot on! I really enjoy your playing. Keep it up!

  • (3 0f 3) The piano solo (played by George Martin) was recorded with the machine running at 41.25 cycles, over a minor 3rd down. This means, most likely, Martin physically PLAYED the solo (to a slowed down, pitch-shifted track) in C! If you think about that ascending gliss at the end, it makes a lot more sense that he was on the white keys. Also makes that descending run in the middle an easier go.

    All the best,

    Jim

  • @JimBoggia Thanks, Jim. Yes, the solo was recorded at a different speed, like it was on "In My Life," although I didn't know he did it in C. It does make sense, though, you're right. The glissando at the end is very difficult to do in Eb!

  • (2 0f 3) Using Lewisohn's 'Sessions' book & Kehew & Ryan's 'Recording the Beatles', the following can be found: Studio 2's 4-track machine normally ran at 50 cycles and this is the speed at which the backing track (with Paul on piano but NOT playing the solo) was recorded. The track was mixed (creating the version we hear on the records) at 48.75 cycles, taking the pitch down nearly a semi-tone. This means, irrefutably, that the basic track was recorded in the key of E.

    (continued)

  • (1 of 3) Nice version of the solo. I'm currently learning this for playing with the Fab Faux & it's making my brain melt.

The debate about what key this song is in is not so straightforward. I agree with you that the final version plays in Eb (though it's a tiny bit sharp). Remember though, Pepper was recorded at the height of their use of vari-speed, which complicates things.

    (continued)

  • John i've said this a THOUSAND times before and I say it again: YOU ROCK!!!!!

  • This is pretty hard to play but it's so worth it when you can lol.

  • "and may even get you that job promotion" HA! you crax me up john

  • yuups this song is in the key of E flat

  • John learnt to play the piano from paul and paul was the better pianist but paul went of the piano for a year in which john played the songs i am the walrus and strawberry fields forever

  • This song is in E flat and I'm not going to debate it with you any longer. You're wrong, and that's that. End of discussion.

  • why dont you put your tutorial instead to have critical comments! asshole!

  • Mr. Lennon?! Hah, is that really you, John? Anyway, I'm a new subscriber and a HUGE fan, PianoJohn!

On solos like this or the intro to Sexy Sadie (I'm assuming it's McCartney on both), it's just fantastic that an unschooled musician like him came up with them. I always suspected George Martin of doing this solo but he wasn't credited for it, hence...

Keep up the GREAT work. Wishing you more successes!

  • Thanks, pnoynoir, I appreciate the comment, and thanks for subscribing too. I agree, it's amazing that PM was able to come up with the melodies he did without any real formal musical training (although his father was an excellent jazz pianist).. I guess it shows that some people just have a natural instinct for it!

  • i think that lennon had superior pian ablity

  • @pnoynoir no sexy sadie its john on that one :P

  • Sexy Sadie = Susan Atkins...scary stuff Lennon knew about it before the album came out LOL

  • exuse me mr lennon but could u please teach im down by the batles thnx

  • LOLOLOL...John, my lovely teacher, theres NO WAY I am ever gonna be able to play this....I'm laughing cos YOUR laughing on the video....your lil write up says ....A bit higher on the difficulty scale......ITS OFF THE PAGE HUN lololol...( Skulks back to cary on with Let It Be )...By the way ...its 1:38 am here in the UK and I'm still watching your vId lol

  • lol, well, I tried to warn people on this one, ha! Downward runs in E-flat are not the easiest thing to play.. You'll have a much better time with Let it Be, for sure! :-)

  • Hi John, thanks for this tutorial. I've spent many hours learning songs from you. Any chance of you showing us Lovely Rita from start to finish?

  • Yes, it's been on the list for quite a while now. The rhythm is a little tricky to teach, but I'll try to get to it at some point soon. Glad you like the vids!

  • The song is in E flat, not E natural. Tune your piano and do some homework before commenting, Captain Zig Zag.

  • Pianojohn113 is playing it right and he is one of the few who does. The song is in Eb major, not E. George Martin talked about it in a BBC interview because he played the solo on the song. The OldMusic dude is wrong.

  • I don't give a damn what key you heard it was in, I just got done playing it in E Major with the song from Sgt. Peppers. Its in E Major, try playing it with the song.

  • @oldmusicisGoldMusic: you might not give a damn if you're playing it wrong but the rest of us know this version is right. I have played it with the song note for note many times and if your keyboard was in tune you would see its in Eb. go back and learn your notes, shithead, cuz you're wrong.

  • opk1969 no need for fowl language, there is nothing wrong with being wrong, we lear from our mistakes.

@pianojohn -- Very good turtial, all I said was my book is in E major. No need for use to hate eachother : )

  • opk: please keep it civil.

OldMusic: there is no hatred.. just don't come to my channel with sarcastic comments that are blatantly wrong. Sheet music publishers often transpose keys to make them easier for guitar players; in your case, from Eb to E natural. That doesn't make them accurate, it makes them lazy. You can play it in any key you want. The CORRECT key, however, is E flat, and I'm not going to debate it here. Thanks.

  • Again I checked this and the CORRECT chord according to how it was written is E FLAT.....A lot of publishers change keys liek John said, to make it easier to play / understand. John is playing it the way it was written which is after all, how we all want to play it

  • i suport you !!

  • @indotravis lol, thanks! :-)

  • Although Pianojohn is a GOD..I have just looked it up and the sheet music states it in the chord is in fact E MAJOR

  • Thanks to your wonderful guides, I completely aced this and Martha My Dear in maybe 1 hour, thank you very much, and keep on the awesome tutorials :)

  • That's great, nice job on learning those so quickly! Thanks for the comment.

  • we can throw tons of bull shit comments , we were not there when it was recorded, so whatever the fuck we say, doesn't even matter, the fact is to play it as well as this guy on this video, who is neither Mc Cartney nor Martin, so shut the fuck up and learn from him, who has tons of patience to upload this stuff. you guys talk about 'this guys's style" and even "speeding up the recording", give me a break , like if you guys were there. just learn and play it, if you guys like piano

  • what are the chords for the actual whole song?

  • I don't have a tutorial for the whole song yet, but I may post one at some point soon.

  • i dont need a tutorial per se just the chords if you have them hah. ive had trouble finding them

  • You Definitely should post the entire song

  • Paul was certainly capable of this, but it's a Martin solo.

  • @BeatleMathYT Nah, Martin always played the bits the others couldn't. Trust me, if McCartney could have done it he would have, as independent as he liked to be.

  • @BeatleMathYT Paul's right hand was too weak because he's left handed and the right is very busy in this solo.

  • Yes,,, Paul may can play this, but the fact is that it's played by G. Martin on the record.

    Nice solo

  • i think paul can play this, he's more skilled than you think

plus this song is much easier than you think... try it and you'll see

  • . I would bet money that Paul did not play this , and if he did, he did it much slower in realtime and sped it up for the album recording. the playing really seems like Martin , in that the style and movement is reminscent of Martins playing of IN MY LIFE.

  • Actually George Martin in the son "In My Life" play the solo much slower and speed it up, that's why it sounds so "weird".

  • yes, you may be able to play it, but you didnt write it, and you probably practiced it many times over and over again.

in other words, it sometimes easier to have the time to practice on particualr piano piece, over and over, and play it, then to write it and play it in a short period of time .

  • That's what I always thought. The Beatles had to wrote every song and with a lot of pressure plass playing it well, I mean, they didn't had much time to practice, and there's more, they never studied music!!!

  • Okay, after watching this tutorial dozens of times, im now willing to bet a million zimbabwe dollars, that there is no way Mcartney played this piano solo in real time . Either Martin did it, or Mcartney did it in half time and had it speed up. Sgt Pepper album was full of studio tricks anyways.

I think Id rather watch john play this, intead of me spending hours on it, trying to play a 14 second piano piece. LOL.

  • george martin played the solo.

  • Well, I'm 14 and I can play this song just as fast as PianoJohn can, so I'm willing to bet that Paul could have played it. Just my opinion though. =)

  • @enolaniaga I'm betting that George Martin probably did it.

  • @enolaniaga George Martin played it. Paul was pretty strong in the left hand because he is left handed, but he was too slow with his right at the time, which is understandable. Imagine playing the fast parts with your wrong hand.

  • well I think we both agree that Mcartney did not play this piano solo himself, or, in the way it was released. He may have done it half speed one octave down, and had Martin speed it up.

  • John, you are incredible. I have to wonder if Mcartney may have recorded this at half tempo and had it sped up simliar to what Martin did on In my Life harpsichord solo. IMHO, this piano solo, at this speed, was above Mcartneys abilities.

  • It could have been sped up, I'm not sure.. I believe George Martin played this solo too, though, so I suppose it could have been done at normal speed.. but the difficulty level is high either way!

  • hi john thanks for the video post, please could you do the rest of the song, this is one of my favourite beatle tunes! tom london

  • Hey John, rusky here. Hey, if you will post the rest of the song up, that would be really appreciated. You're a stroke of pure genius. You're amazing, once again!

  • Omgsh, I just watched the first 15 secs of this and you are brilliant!! I must have said that a million times, but that is just fan-bloody-tastic!

  • Thank you! :-)

  • agreed... you are the best human being a this moment, thank you thank you thank you..

  • Hey, thanks, I appreciate it! :-)

  • I dont care what anyone says , Mcartney is the king of pop and pop songwriting.

  • did you just say king pop? well you are very wrong

  • My god, I wish I had half of the musical skills you have.

  • you are the best human being there is at the moment.

  • Thanks very much!

  • Yeah John, it would really be apprectiated if you do the rest of the song.

  • I may do the rest of the song eventually. It's actually not too difficult to learn.

  • sweet!

  • Do you think you could get around to doing the whole song?

  • Yes, I may be able to do that. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Awesome tutorial, thanks a lot :)

Could you do a tutorial for "In My Life" piano solo too? that would be great!

  • could you make a tutorial of "Real Love" by Mr. Lennkn

  • I would love it if you could teach honky cat.

  • I asked him that about 2 weeks ago. Great song!

  • This is just wonderful, thank you!

  • you're just amazing! thanks

  • Thank you!

  • RITA!!! Standing by a parking meta!

  • wow i'm so excited to learn all the beatles songs. Glad I found you hahaha. Thank you for teaching the world. OMG just saw that you have Fool on the Hill, gotta jump to that next. Wow again thanks for taking the time to show everyone these songs

  • Happy to do it for you.. glad it was helpful!

  • That run down from the F at 0:06 should be done with two hands with a harmonic line in the bass.

  • Smartass >.>

  • No, that guy is right

  • can you please post the whole track ? it's one of Pauls best from Peppers. thanks

  • Sir George Martin performed this solo on the February 1967 recording of this song. He is a very skilled player who often would play solos in The Beatles' songs. Check out the solos in "In My Life" and "Rock and Roll Music".

  • everyone knows george martin did those, because everyone tries to make a point of telling the whole world.

  • you oughta post the whole song...i have a friend that wants to play this

  • You are very great!!! Thank you very, very much!!!!

    And Beatles for ever!!!

  • youre so good, its like irritating

  • thank you man, thanks to you i can in on a Beatles Tribute Band. Thanks Pianojohn113.

  • Awesome! Beatles tribute bands are great. Rock on!

  • pianojohn113 you are a GOD, a dream come true!

  • lol, thanks!

  • This ham-and-egger keyboardist would be lost without your tutorials, John.

Thank you so much for every clip you've posted.

You're a huuuge help, you play extremely well, and explain everything perfectly!

  • Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful! :-)

  • wow thats amazing man :D your sooooooo groovy I felt like I was listening to the song :D Paul would be proud

  • yer a sodding genius pianojohn!

  • lol, thanks! :-)

  • Are you gonna teach the rest of the song? you do the best tutorials btw, i never though I would learn the I Am The Walrus intro on piano, i was suprised to find your video on it, i was thinking it was impossable to play on piano

  • i love your tutorials pianojohn. can you please make some tutorials for classic rock songs from like iron maiden, metallica or maybe just some rock riffs. PLEASE!!

  • you play beutiful

  • The solo in "In My Life" was played an octave down at half the tempo, recorded at half speed (resulting in playback an octave higher and normal tempo when playing the tape at regular speed). The same technique was used on the solo in "Rocky Raccoon" and the "out of college, money spent" section of "You Never Give Me Your Money".

The solo in "Lovely Rita" was indeed recorded with the tape running slower, in the key of C. (BTW, The final key of the recording is in between E-flat and E.)

  • everybody and their dog knows about the in my life solo (everybody makes a point of re-telling the story) but I didn't know about the rocky raccoon and YNGMYM. are you sure?

  • I'd have to check if it's been mentioned in any of the books, however, you can hear it in the timbre of the piano. Furthermore, those tremolos in Rocky Raccoon are a bit fast when listening at normal playback speed. If you slow down both songs to half speed, you can hear that the piano sounds more natural.

  • McCartney Owns

  • god mccartney was a fucking genius

  • george martin actually played this solo, but i do agree with you about mccartney lol

  • I would give anything to play that!

  • Amazing, man. Greetings from Brazil!

  • I like this, thanks!

  • isn't there a piano part at the end of the song

  • i don't know if its true, but i read that George Martin palyed this part on piano, and and played the piano on a few songs..like piggies...ps jhon your great.. plz keep it up

  • You're right about George Martin, he did play many of their piano solos, including this one (I think). Glad you enjoyed the vid!

  • I've learned this but somehow cant get that jiggle down at all!!

  • The jiggle is the toughest part! :-)

  • who played this piano on the origanial recording, john or paul?

  • it was their producer, george martin

  • Omg, again I would love to have a portable piano or computer. GAAAAAH.

Don't erase your videos for like 5-6 years!

Or can I download them somewhere?

  • In what key do you play it btw?

  • This one's in E-flat.

  • I think there's a way to download it, but I don't know what it is. Search around the 'net and someone can probably tell you how to do it.

  • uum do you know "you gave me the answer" by paul mccartney and wings ???

  • No, I haven't played that one... Maybe I'll have to learn it..?

  • It wpould be awesome , if you coud learn it and make a tutorial ;D

  • Great tutorial John, Thank you very much. This little piece reminds of the piano solo in Rocky Raccoon. My brother plays that song on guitar and I would really like to play that solo with him. Any chance you know the chords for that? Thanks again, I've been learning a song or so a week from you.

  • Thanks, glad you liked it! I do know the chords for Rocky Raccoon, and will try to get that up here soon. The piano solo sounds really good on an old-time upright piano.

  • I have a digital piano at home, but I am soon getting an old upright piano from a neighbor for my lakehouse in the mountains. Rocky Raccoon would be a perfect song to play up there. Thanks again for everything.

  • Thanks so much this is really good. Have you done the piano part for The Night Before?

  • Glad you enjoyed it! I did my own performance of The Night Before, and it's in my collection of videos. I haven't done a tutorial on it, though.

  • now I can play it!, I tried to play it some months ago I think, but I thought it was too hard, but now I've got it really fast ! :D you are great thanks

  • Great! Yes, it seems hard at first, but I found that it sort of just comes together eventually, and next thing you know you've got it.

  • Your great!

  • Thanks very much!

  • You have to do Good Day Sunshine.

  • Should be up here fairly soon, I hope.

  • Fantastic lessons! How about Lennon's Jealous Guy... Show me that one.

    Dave

  • Been meaning to get to that one for months. I'll try to get to it soon!

  • I'd heard that, and I think you're right. Makes sense, like it was in "In My Life."

  • i dont mean to be a dick but when you go down the scale quickly (F Eb D C Bb Ab G)to the c chord (i think it's C) isnt there a harmony in the left hand?

  • There isn't harmony (as near as I can tell) but some people double the notes in both hands. I don't think that's really necessary, though, especially given the difficulty of the solo already.

  • There is a harmony on the descending line (from F to G in the video) a 10th below.

  • i think you should do golden slumbers/cary that weight/ the end medley. that would be a good one.

  • That one's almost done.. Should be up here in a few days.

  • Great!

Who do you think played this piano solo during the original recording...Paul or John?

    I think Paul.
