So how does this compare to a helicopter or any fixed wing STOL, or glider style aircraft? What's the benefit other than being able to grate cheese mid air?
@DaddyOD13 Compared to a helicopter? I can see how creating your ow low pressure area has advantages but surely it still has all of the disadvantages of a helicopter? If that blower fails it's going down in a hurry as it doesn't seem to use forward motion at all to generate lift; it looks like it's all blower. Also, won't a quadcopter provide the same if not better functionality?
@DaddyOD13 I've never known anything that uses a cyclic rotor not to be able to autorotate on engine failure, though cycloid wings are somewhat rare and not as commonly tested.
I was looking forward to see the controller cut off the engine so could notice what kinda glide pattern it has or to see if it glides like a 10 ton John Deere combine harvester, as I suspect it would?
@dudequerky - At the nose or tail? Both? Let's imagine an engine failure with free spinning blades by chance sucking up lines while the canopy is deployed causing another malfunction and it's back to gliding like a 10 ton JD combine.
Wait! Let's imagine an engine fire with loss of power. Do they deploy chutes? Deployed above a fire? Hm, another JD combine free falling. :(
Okay, that's pretty cool, but, I couldn't help but to laugh at what she said half way through the video. "Okay, so what's happening now?" "It's taking off."
@raycod84 From WIKIPEDIA:- " *The throttle directly affects the pitch which means increased throttle can slow the plane down much in the same manner a helicopter flares, and if carelessly applied can force a complete mid-air stop. *Glide-ratio in case of power-failure is rather low (about 1:3) but if the power-line is disengaged, the fan-wing is fully capable of doing an auto-rotational landing."
Interesting. - You still wouldn't get me in one, though.
what about communiting? How about a full size version. Lift at low speed is ideal for possible personal commuter flights, short runways commonplace. I wish I wasn't broke I'd be all in with money and Ideas. Also have you ever though of making it cheap and very small for indoor micro r/c. Its hot right now. Parkzone is a company making millions in that market. Good little planes.

quite remarkable design, if it dosnt make it in the real world, im guessing it would make a nice artf kit for model pilots

@fireworkstube Higher lift and thrust at slow speeds, slower speed surveillance and higher stability in turbulent weather.

fireworkstube 2 months ago
@fireworkstube It does use forward motion to generate lift, and It has some wing space.
But I'd like to see what would happen with power out.
Maybe fan spin would still give it some control on the way down.
Composite fan blades would help with weight also.
I'd love to see more on this, it's new to me.
It doesn't really compare to a helicopter, but it's probably cheaper and quieter than one.

@DaddyOD13
I suspect it would go into autorotation, but I am not sure.

@singedrac I think so too, but it may not handle like a chopper going down.

@SatanStartedIslam a full size version carrying passengers would have to have parachutes in the case of an engine failure. that thing wont glide...

Looks like a lot of drag, weight, and energy consumption. Inefficient.
