  • Awesome from Mr.Vai !

  • @OliDuncan

It's a simple blues progression. The ALL sound like "Scuttle Buttin."

  • Good explanation!

  • He actually wrote "thanks Stevie" next to this song on the back of the Anthology album....:)

  • Jibboom my aching ass! It's Scuttle Buttin.

  • Angus Young made a career out of that kind of one handed like.

  • the tone.........................THE TONE

  • Could you talk about injuries of the hands and wrist?

  • thats right, you lick that lips 4:30

  • Is this the answer to the question, 'Steve how do I perform a pull off?'

  • 3 hours to get all the strings. well, i better get started :)

  • This is not a guitar lesson this is a tip for life :)

  • 3:59 Tongue Roll! Just like in Where the Wild Things Are where he says only some people can do it ;)

  • I'm sorry, but his tone is ultimate. His legacy II and Jem are responsible for the beauty of sound. The skill is important, but without that equipment, it just won't sound like that.

  • @salasvalor01 Not entirely true. Tone comes from your hands. Even if you had the exact same equipment or even were playing Vai's own equipment, you wouldn't sound like him.

  • @salasvalor01: Tone comes from your hands. The amps, guitars, pedals, etc, SHAPE the tone, you hands MAKE the tone.

  • @MrKnivesGuy when i went to his master class somebody asked him that and he said it was there to stop his E string getting caught under his pickgueard :) so simple but i bet 10000000 people have done it in an effort to just look like steve vai lol

  • THIS REALLY WORKS! =)

  • steve vai my first inspiration to playing guitar, a god amongst us guitarist.

  • Steve's musical wisdom is unmatched!

  • love to hear a virtuoso break it down to most basic simple form of Perfect Practice makes us better players. i often have several ideas streaming thru my head so i go pick up the guitar and wind up not settling into one particular piece for very long before I'm off onto another riff or piece of music in my head. Thanks for bringing it back into "focus" for me

  • I do this, and I can get the guitar to "wah" like there is a wahwah in there, and there isn't so hard to explain but it happens I think that focus on one single phrase or such is what get's that to happen when you focus so much on one tiny thing till it is all that is in your mind, musical meditation as Steve calls it, focus focus focus,,, so true

  • Thanks, this is very usefull :) Would be nice to see a with scales and licks you use.

  • Because when you sight read you can hear the ENTIRE phrase in your head, and not the notes separately like when you use tabs...This way you can really practice effectively and really develop technique.

  • In order to make every note have it's own zip-code you NEED to learn to read music and sight read. This is the real secret Steve isn't telling...:P

  • My english is very bad...

    Thanks!!!!!!!!

Steve Vai is God of Guitar

    Are you he mesiasssssssss??????????

  • vai u're amazing...... Thumbs up!!!

  • good

  • Valeu Vai....

  • 2 words. Scuttle Buttin.

  • @OliDuncan haha sorrta :p

  • @OliDuncan YES!

  • @OliDuncan SRV!!!11

  • @OliDuncan: Happy to not be the only one who noticed that.

  • @OliDuncan Wow. I can't believe it, you're right on the money! I love Steve Vail, but I guess even he plaigiarizes songs. Well the only one left is Satch!

  • steve vai....i love you!!!!

  • All this techniques... I found a video of an Italian guitarist who uses a technique that allows you to do incredible licks whithout difficulties... the video is Renato Villari Skidding Scales. ;)

  • what I would give to get an hour of lesson from him :O

  • The cool thing about this vid is that the tips are universal!

  • somehow steve reminds me of fabio.. but then with some actual talent xD

  • luvh it

  • @toledosan that's exactly my problem :/

  • @toledosan that's exactly my problem :/

  • Man... I think too much when I play, I just have to learn to play and just let loose!!! Unleash the FREAK!!!

  • just realized...Jibboom is kinda based off of Scuttle Buttlin' by Stevie Ray Vaughan. :o

  • Steve vai is my hero

  • 7 people need to teabag an open beartrap

  • own style my ass it sounds like stevie ray vaughan scuttle buttin!

  • Comment removed

  • @Dnrocks93 Do you know how many blues songs there are in the world? What do you think the odds are that two of them might sound similar?

  • @Dnrocks93 i think hes not copy vaugan, i say this not bcause im a vai fans.. just listen the entire song till the end, about Scuttle Buttlin, the begining of jibbom just like common thing in rock n roll and blues. and every body is free to use.. when u listen the song not only from the beginning u will see his own style.. i hope it helps you to understand what he means..peace

  • great words from steve...but the payoff is a clean, yet insipid, variation on SRV's Scuttlebuttin

  • It's funny how Steve was taught by Joe, but yet barely any blues has rubbed off on him.

  • 7 ppl like justin bieberand slash

  • @gstoders Whats wrong about Slash?

  • i love how he knows he can't play the blues. hahaha. humble.

  • @YoLpIsBest

Hmmm... great guitar player he is :P

  • i want to cum.. :)

  • Quero a sonolidade dele .-.

  • his fingers are really long lol

  • Awesome Guy! ;-)

  • does vai have a sweep lesson?

  • @ItsmeFrederick Vai doesn't really sweep much...I mean we're talking probably 10 songs out of his entire catalogue that use more than some raking...his flash is so much beyond the world of sweeping...when i was young i was so focused on playing fast and sweeping as if that made me awesome, but I rarely sweep these days and most of the greats like satch and petrucci don't really use too much sweeping...Most sweeping is just arpeggios, and can seriously damage the creative integrity of a piece.

  • @MikeyManNp Petrucci sweeps fairly often..

  • ....no comment, chapeau, Maîttre...

  • Great teacher

  • AWESOME tone

  • Musical meditation totally works, but it requires a lot of discipline. A few months ago I had some time available so I committed to spend an average of 6 hours per day for 5 consecutive weeks working on technique, including an hour a day doing musical meditation. Even though I had already been playing more than 30 years I grew exponentially as a guitarist. Remember: practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

  • @originalskylark what's musical meditation how do you do it?

  • @originalskylark totally agree.sometimes man ,some people practice a lot but they dont get good results like steve said.training in the right way with hard discipline is the way to get your own style and even improve musics that you already know.simple things get you to complex results, working in technique, speed and melody is the way that a good guitarist can be a master of music. Good advice, originalsky.

  • Listening to Vai is depressing because I have to suffer through knowing that I'll NEVER be that good

  • that's a humble name for a channel if I ever saw one.

  • Lefte18 he did this song as a tribute to srv. He said this in the audio commentary on live at the astoria

  • I've been wanting to learn this for years! Thanks Steve! :)

  • sounds like a scuttle buttin rip off

  • i found this lesson very helpfull even though i am a bassist

  • the best!

  • Is he picking the first note of every role? Or is it just legato style without picking at all?

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed picking the first note of the sequence. or your can try picking all, then just legato. develop the different styles, but the most used is picking just the first note

  • kkkkkkkkk 1:45 TOTALY FAIL kkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • he is monkey

  • @johnkaterman i didnt know that ur dad is a monkey!

  • I can't learn this. We use Postcodes in th UK :(

  • Dear Mr. Steve Vai Himself, please come play in ohio. bring your three friends, they can play with you

  • Satch and Vai, the gods of guitars!!

  • gotta love Ibanez Jems!

  • "naturally you may not be playing it that fast and clean in the beginning...". He may as well have said "Granted, you'll never play it as good as me!"...and the fact is, he would STILL come off humble, because he's just THAT damn good!

  • Yanke rose, y Steve Vai, los mejores, con David Lee Roth

  • We just finished this lesson this past week. Even with the amount of time I had to practice (with job, wife, kids, etc), I was able to really improve upon something that I thought I was already good at - some as "simple" as pull-offs...

After recording my assignment and listening back, it was very apparent to me the positive impact the lesson had on me (including a lot of other stuff than just pull-offs - phrasing, timing, etc...)

  • only steve vai can wear that hat and be taken seriously.

  • . a VERY likeable person. Thank you Steve!

  • "You may not be doing it that fast and clean in the beginning"... or ever

  • how do you play the whole whole song jibbaboom

  • you cant help but love the man holy shitt hes good

  • incredible ,,,love your style

  • great exercises yes.... limit how long you do them or you can end up with major medical problems....I became disabled from this stuff.....careful mates.....

  • Just great teaching... Just great.

  • Thanks for the lesson Steve. The most important thing I take from that is that I need to think more about what I want to play rather than just playing. It's good to take a breathe to use your imagination, hear the music, imagine the melody, and then play it.

  • -"Hey guys, I learned this today"- You play Jibbom. The guys says "WTF! Amazing! Who teached you that?"

    -You answer: "God".

  • He seems like a really nice guy.

  • @Sivels He is. I've met him 3 times, and I can say he is a wonderful person.

  • @ 3:50 "naturally you suck, but you might be half as good as i am one day " haha

  • very true. i always imagine myself accomplishing some kind of solo before i play so i know how im going to practice it. might be a weird concept but it works for sure.

  • thank you very much. Very helpful lesson. Clear explanation and great philosophy on the way of practicing.

Thanks again. Much obliged. Great respect.

    Trent.

  • thank you very much. Very helpfull lesson. Clear explenation and great philosophy on the way of practicing.

  • all of my 3 really good riffs were made that way (-_-')

  • "Every note has to have its own zip code, its own personality, and life"

There are so many guitar shredders that don't do that.

Nobody does it better than Steve. Nobody.

  • I did it my way of jibboom!

many mistakes but i try all the time.

    Thank you Mr.Vai!

  • What the Greatest Guitarist on the Planet ever maybe after Jason Becker I think,,,but he is the Best now,,

  • Definitely a great musician/artist/teacher and above all person.

  • "the steve vai tone" is a thick midsey lead tone i have no idea what your talking about

  • Hey Mr. Steve Vai, I love your tone in this clip ! I really are often really dissapointed that your tone is like a MIDI sound. No criticism, (maybe positive) I would love to hear your tone more in the Mids, and Fat area rather than the thin tones you've adopted. Your such a great player, and I appreciate so much your time in posting this lesson, which is very useful, get fat Man !!! ;)

  • @AbraXaDabra who are you to be telling him what kind of tone to get out of his guitar!!?? o_O

  • @MAW9 Who are you telling me what tone I like, Mr. Steve Vai is a genius, very well educated, played in Frank Zappa's band as a young man, and has a thicker skin than either you or me combined. If you can't be open minded about people's comments you'll go nowhere, fast ... down you go, ...

  • steve vai= master

  • seria bueno q este en castellano entenderia mucho mas o q tenga opcion de idiomas :/

  • he was one of the best, now he has run out of ideas!

  • In the Armenian language word VAI - means admiration.... When Armenians are admired by something, speak "vai-vai"

Steve! I am admired and grateful for all your lessons!

  • I wish I had steve as a personal teacher...wow!

  • you tend forget how important steve vai is sometimes, and how good he is!!

  • Steve !:!:Mââââââaâ^!::!:!

  • Sweet, sweet... love him! An inspiration!

  • This man is a major inspiration for my own music. Steve's shown me how to love my guitar, and how to feel what I play just by playing on stage.

  • ...and that;s why Steve is the greatest guitarist/philosophizer/comedian/writer/and all around great dude ever!

  • 4 people couldnt go for it!

  • My guitar teacher told me to practice like this for 30 minutes on the same string. I thought he was an idiot. If a Guitar God tells me the same thing, I must be the idiot.

  • @Torrello13 i wouldnt say on the same string

BUT the same Riff, lick, scale is good to practice for a half an Hour straight

  • @MetalHeart8787 Oh I get it NOW. but if I had listened years ago I would be more proficient now.

  • @Torrello13 its not ur fault. i have no idea who ur teacher was but im sure he is no where near the credibility of steve vai. because of that, many fantastic musicians will go unnoticed because u need reputation to make it in any facet of the business world. ur teacher may actually b better steve vai for all we know, but because steve vai is steve vai, he will always get a red carpet to make a difference while we have to fight for ours

  • @fatalbert51888 it was more than 15 years ago my teacher was amazing. Last time I saw him was in the studio I helped produce a track with him on a demo. It was an acoustic demo but an acoustic shredding demo. trust me you had to hear what he was doing on an acoustic guitar, I still shake my head when i think of it. the cool solo on my page was something we (mostly him) worked out. I originally picked the notes and it was him who was like no just hammer them. I don't' know where he is now.

  • @Torrello13 Yes you are

  • @ramabima interesting opinion from someone who has no subs or vids. now for my opinion. It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool , then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. go back to being silent.

  • @Torrello13 It's a common case where a wannabe (which is you) feels better than the real deal.

  • Comment removed

  • @ramabima I most certainly am a "wannabe" , I know what my skills are and what I would like them to be. You on the other hand have no talent. Even your meager attempts at insulting others through the anonymity of a youtube account is just one more thing you have failed at. Why don't you take your foodstamps down to the package store and try to forget what an epic failure you are while the rest of us use this website to share information and opinions in a positive, thoughtful way.

  • @Torrello13 one of the best things you can do with this is get a metronome set to a very low sixtuplet pulse [at about 60 bpm]....and play it along with that...after a while you start hearing the sixlet come through. the start counting hem as tripplets...tripplet tripplet tripplet ect

  • Hi, God!

  • 4 people's finger fell off

  • If you practice bad habbits, you're gonna sound like you have bad habbits!

  • Sounds ALOT like Stevie RAy Vaughn

  • @darthvaderyoda Jibboom actually IS kinda lyk tribute to SRV's scuttle buttin

  • yup..thats why Steve is one of my personal favorite guitarists!! All respects to ya Steve..

  • Never thought of guitar meditation throughout my 10-year guitar experience

New advice to keep in mind

RESPECT my fav. guitarist on earth, Mr. Vai

  • Respect Mr.Vai!

  • Steve " Yoda " Vai.

  • @YoLpIsBest Go 30 minutes on one string, you shall. ;-)

  • La ringrazio molto, Steve!

  • Steve has great licks and chops and proves both at 4:29. What an insane player!!!

  • naturally you would't be doing that that fast and clean at the begining...no shit hahah

  • Steve awsome videos you post for us lil guys but............ what is that little what looks like a mini tuning fork under the tape on the front pickup for???? Thanks

  • I`ve watched a lot of guitar instructional video. But this small clip blow them away. Just like “1 note and tell you the whole story” thing.

  • you cant really see the bottom 3 strings, so it looks like hes making amazing sound from nothing

  • @SweSk8er yeah, you are so over the hill lol! naw, getting better isn't just about physical technique or whatever it is you think you can't get better at. Not many players have fully developed their own voice by age 19, so you should keep playing, set goals, and you will see/hear results.

  • illuminati

  • i think this guy could make you want to learn the guitar even if you hated guitars

  • Similar to scuttle buttin by srv

  • @PhatJoe170

It IS actually a tribute to SRV. It says that in the cd, if you didn't know that already.

  • @Zhaggysfaction yeah, he isn't really much of a 'blues' player, he even seems to admit to that during the lesson, but it is cool that he gave a shout out to SRV

  • 30 minutes??!!

  • @Deanosius Yes, better practise 30 minutes WELL than three hours inefficiently.

  • @Deanosius yeah that's it 30minutes for every lick/riff/skill or something per day.. (if you try to learn whole song it makes about 20 licks and 6 riffs so it takes 13 hours for a day; not too much, is it ?)

  • @MuratCandogan I don't even spend 30 minutes on my guitar per week....let alone per lick/riff/skill. I'm never gona get good.

  • You are The Guitar Guru, Steve ! Thank you.

  • nice that steve is putting this up

  • 1000th view

    vai is awesome

    mg sucks

    ice is cold

  • im view 999 :D

  • Steve , is that White jem flo ,evo, your favorite guitar??? Practice 3x . til you bleed..Bob

  • u guies sood practise ur speling.
