I've heard that EQ is unforgiving (as were games of the era). I think I could really enjoy a hardcore game if it had an amazing community. un-instanced dungeons, oh my god.
@GouledXD It's less unforgiving than it was when it first came out. Now you can rez when you die, back in the day if you died you were looking at a half hour+ corpse run then another 6 hours of grinding to get your lost exp back. I play on Xenogy which seems to have a lot of folks playing
I LOVE the fact that the servers for this game are still running and its STILL a pay to play game. So many games these days have gone F2P but Everquest stands strong! Even while it's "successor" has since fallen into F2P obscurity.
Don't see why people would pay to play each month for this game and like most others, especially when it's about 13 year's old, good thing it's free to play now though, about time!
I remember how stressed I was as an Iksar sneaking into the Erudite city to turn in my items for my Monk epic weapon. Every NPC had orders to kill me on sight. Everquest really gave a sense of accomplishment.
@abbba2 i would say so, there is so much content in this game its hard to match it with any other game out there. I have not played in about a year but from what i remember it was decently balanced. My only issue is that solo game play is difficult at best. Most people (on my server) multi-box to run a group themselves.

Im actually redownloading this to reminisce. I played since early release... when your first full suit of banded mail made you godly to the noobies. I've been on WoW since 10-2006, and while EQ is dated, it's still on my top 10 of all timers. It gave MMO gaming it's initial flight into the giant it became... AND, it's still up and running side by side with it's sequel. I can't wait for the dl to finish.

the game looks great. The only thing is that the windows in the game look like they could of used work, like explain what they do or not have them appear all at once XD.
There will in my opinion never be a game like this again. The feeling of exploration and discovery mixed with danger was unreal. Most people don't understand how it felt to run or be part of a guild.. Everything was new for the most part and the relationships you made with people were genuine. This was far more than a game, it was an experience I will always miss and cant put into words. Greatest video game ever.

@somethinfishy11 i played 2001 - 2006... I would highly recommend not going back to the game. i tried going back a few months ago. every zone that used to be populated is now completely dead. I went to Gfay then immediately left because i was the ONLY person there. they have about two zones you need to stay in, which will get you up to level 50 in as little as 2 weeks. (i got to 47 in a week, playing about 4-5 hrs a day. then quit.). groups are nonexistent now as well.. very very upsetting.
I don't care what anyone says, WOW just copied Everquest, I mean after Everquest came out someone else from another company said, "Hey lets make an Online Game that ppl have to pay to play, and lets make it big, lets have all these different areas, but we'll call them "Zones" and lets also have alot of different classes, races and playable characters that players can choose from...and we'll call it World Of Warcraft!" which they took Everquest and changed the name.........

@nickdaly112233 I really enjoy the game. Every time I log in I think that it couldn't possibly get better. It is the same thing as last time, and after about 5 minutes I will say, "that's new, and cool."
I still remember when I quit and played other games. None were even close to as difficult and none had the same feelings of accomplishment. Getting anything done in this game was such a feat! I do remember some bad things. Like, old zones would become ghost towns after expansions. I remember so many 'dungeons' and zones that I don't think I ever stepped into or just passed through.

I'm looking forward to GW2, but I think it will just be "another fun game". You could always try EQemu. Its pretty fun just to play EQ again, but its not the same as when Verant was running it.
play on project1999, it is a well policed hack-free working emulator of the first 3 expansions for EQ. Currently on Kunark with over 1000 active players.
I shall install EQ now! so it might be completely d/l by march 16. lol.

I went to Gfay then immediately left because i was the ONLY person there. they have about two zones you need to stay in, which will get you up to level 50 in as little as 2 weeks. (i got to 47 in a week, playing about 4-5 hrs a day. then quit.). groups are nonexistent now as well.. very very upsetting.

I don't care what anyone says, WOW just copied Everquest, I mean after Everquest came out someone else from another company said, "Hey lets make an Online Game that ppl have to pay to play, and lets make it big, lets have all these different areas, but we'll call them "Zones" and lets also have alot of different classes, races and playable characters that players can choose from...and we'll call it World Of Warcraft!" which they took Everquest and changed the name.........

Nothing will ever beat Everquest 1 No matter what. these spoiled kids only think about graphic's nowadays WoW is one Giant Cartoon and its prob the easyest game ever. Everquest will Make you Scream Cry and sweat. It created the term HardCore If your Looking for something hard Get this game on top of all that no gear looks the same in wow every class shares the same top in gear.. and last but not least eq's prob has the most zones in any game after 10 years i still havnt seen Every single place

I still remember when I quit and played other games. None were even close to as difficult and none had the same feelings of accomplishment. Getting anything done in this game was such a feat! I do remember some bad things. Like, old zones would become ghost towns after expansions. I remember so many 'dungeons' and zones that I don't think I ever stepped into or just passed through.
Anyone remember trading in the east commonlands tunnel? =(

@somethinfishy11 Me too.. me too... the sounds always bring me back. No other game has given me the same feeling everquest has. I'm looking forward to GW2, but I think it will just be "another fun game". You could always try EQemu. Its pretty fun just to play EQ again, but its not the same as when Verant was running it.

Everquest didn't have instances until Plane of Time. People had to fight over everything that had any loot worth getting.

play on project1999, it is a well policed hack-free working emulator of the first 3 expansions for EQ. Currently on Kunark with over 1000 active players.
