Arrau the "Maestro"... in the score is wrote MODERATO. This the correct tempo, is possible to hear every note, every nuance, every colour...fantastic!
I first heard many faster played versions before i came in contact with this one. At first I thought this tempo was too slow. But now I am changed of mind. The slower version sounds much more natural than the faster ones.
I like Debussy because you can use your own tempo, play around with it throughout the piece and come up with your own interpretation. I am also teaching myself this piece and I have to say that I like the slower tempo as well
I didn´t like much. Looks like he is reading, not memorized. He doens´t play with heart. There´s no surprise. There´s too much notes which should be played at the same time on the piece and here are not. I have listened to some more interpretations I like more. There´s too much pedal also...
Well, this space is dedicated to post comments, and here´s my comment about it. Thanks.
@Dihelson Well....he's playing it rubato, as the music indicates. You just don't like it, but it's not "wrong." Also, this is impressionist music, there's kind of supposed to be pedal. I'd get the "too much pedal" comment if he were playing Beethoven, only because there's almost no pedal markings written by Beethoven.
But this is impressionist music. You use the pedal in Debussy and Ravel's music....a lot. Hell, you use the left pedal a lot as well, and sometimes, even the middle pedal!
This does sound slow to me, but on reflection it's quite legitimate: the tempo is marked "moderato." I don't see how anyone could say this is too slow for moderato. After all, if you took the 2nd mvmt of Beethoven's 7th at this temp it would be fine, and that's an allegretto.
I soo agree... When I first played this piece a played it a lot more slowly than what most play it at, and it gives me a beautiful mental image that's not nearly as awesome at a fast tempo.
Finally a performance with feeling! So many others just rip through this piece and loss all traces of musicality. Wonderful interpretation and performance. Thank you.

Lovely! I'm currently learning this, and it's much better at a slower tempo in my opinion. Then you can really hear the beauty of it! ♥♫

@Dihelson Check out Rubato on wiki. It explains why he doesn't play certain notes together

If you have it please upload clair de lune from the same album, Claudio Arrau's interpretation of Debussy is the best I have heard, supreme talent

A wonderful variety of colours and touch, but the piece lacks momentum at this tempo-Weissenberg strikes me as preferable in this music.

Debussy's impressionist way of composing allows a lot of room for interpretation, so different styles have different meanings.

It sounds better at slow speed. Great performance!
