  • So nice to see a bloke doing a sword dance. No offence to the lassies but this was a warrior dance and it is a wee bit sad that so few men still do it.

    Saor Alba gu brath!

  • Watch your directions in the second step. Yo rounding out your turns. Other than that, not too bad.

  • Hahaha I know! I was such a cheater like that! I did this step last weekend at the Quechee highland games cause I'm too out of shape to do reverse points, and in my head all I was saying was "don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, TURN NOW!"

  • You think that's bad... last year at Cowal, I was so afraid I'd screw up my turns that I did four points instead of a turn at the end of my toe and heel step. -_- Oh the fun of highland dancing.

  • Im looking for a video of the sword dance with the diagonal point step in it. Anyone know of one?

  • Try my video of the Swords from the Glengarry highland games. We do it as the 2nd step there.

  • This is so awesome... I luv the kilt and IT DOES NOT look funny :)

  • Thank you haha! I'm really excited because I have a new one in the works. I've had this one for 5 years now!

  • Lol, a boy with dress is so strange for me :) Ye, i know country... I didn't saw so often boys in dress, that's why, lol...

  • I think there's some linguistic confusion here. First of all, it's called a kilt. Second of all, if people are going to laugh about a kilt, generally they call it a skirt, not a dress. A dress has a top part too, and this does not.

  • yes, i don't know english very well, it's enough for me to know 3 languages good and english normal. And i don't care because i know that i'm not a English speaking guy.

  • Good for you. I guess you'd have to being European. I can speak 12 languages, but Moldovan is not one of them. So you've done much better in English here than I could ever do in Moldovan! Hahaha!

  • In the world is no Moldovan Language. I speak Romanian Language.

  • It's interesting you say that... I worked with a bunch of Moldovans a while ago at a job I had, and they all referred to Moldovan as its own language. They said it's like Romanian, but not the same.

I guess it depends on who you ask eh?

  • I think u worked with people from village. Because in town all the people will tell u that they talk Romanian. We speak Romanian but with dialect. In Australia people speak English, did they said they speak Australian? NO. The same thing here, we don't speak Moldovan language, we speak Romanian with dialect.

  • @aliancemd What? I understand the languages part with the difference being accents, but what's your point? I speak russian and I live in america. I mean, there are differences, but highrishdancer is saying that he worked with moldovians, but they referred to romanian. How many people are in the world? 6.8 billion, there's gonna be different opinions. The point is, I stopped you from arguing. the end.

  • @0XScourgeX0 Lol, u totally deviated from the idea...

  • @aliancemd I honestly don't know either.

  • omg0sh I love this dance! :D

If only in my country is some society where ppl r learning this but no :(

    Awesomeee :D

  • Thank you! This video is so old though!

I'm sure there are highland dancers in Croatia... There are some in Poland and the Czech Republic.

  • Lovely Pas de Basques and Hi-Cuts! My highschool has a pipeband and last year we learned the highland fling and this year we are learning the sword dance. I watch your videos alot and share them with my fellow pipers. They help improve so we don't look so much like dancing pipers if you know what I mean... ;)

  • Aww thanks! This is from like ancient times. I'm now a Premier dancer and a certified teacher. You should pay more attention to my more recent stuff I think... My technique is a bit better haha. Please message me if you have an questions you need answers. I could also make tutorial vids for anything you needed.

  • Okay! Thanks!

  • God a chicken with its head cut off can do a better sword dance then me!! I suck at the swords!! I would rather do the reel 1000 times instead of the swords!!!

  • the guy is good!!!!

  • Why thank you! And I'm better now!

  • Hiya! Great to see more Scottish vids appearing. Where was this one taken? It's hard to make out clearly, but the guy looks like one from my daughters dance class. Although I think he has an Erskine tartan on his kilt.

  • I doubt it... I dance in Vermont. This was taken at a Montréal Indoor competition.

My tartan is actually Strathclyde District Blue-Dress.

  • male highland dancing .. takes your breath away.. ..always has.. though I am a girl, and I loved it..

  • The Sword dance is my favourite. Thanks for the video.

  • Wow, great video! I agree, the boy was better at it, but the girl was terrific as well! Thanks for sharing!

  • Highland Dancing was originally done by men, after a battle they would dance around their enemys swords.

  • Actually, no. The sword dance was done BEFORE battle. It was for goodluck in battle. If their feet touch the swords, they'd have bad luck in battle.

As for the dancers, the boy was excellent! The girl needs to work on her arms a little more. :)

  • Sorry I must have heard different =)

  • Well, yes. Highland dancing was "invented" by male sailors before their battles. The sword dance, however, was performed by the sailor's wives prior to the battle. If a foot touched the sword during the dance it meant doom to the sailor. Myth only of course, but a good way to practice.

  • Actually, it was done BEFORE and AFTER the battle. If they were dancing before the battle and the dancer kicked it, it would be a sign the dancer would probably be wounded or killed in battle. If they danced after the battle, a dancer would have the enemy's decapitated head in the middle of the swords and dance around them. So yeah, you're both right.

  • Obviously there are many opionons on this topic and because there's nothing documenting anything, no one can say 'I'm right' however, I do know that the sword dance was done as a victory dance the first time, became tradition to do before battle along with the sword kicking supersition. Also, the only dance invented by sailors of any gender was the Sailor's Hornpipe. The other highland dances were invented by ancient celtic ground soldiers or towns people. Women did NO dancing until much later.

  • wow if your the boy your highcuts were so much better than hers :)

  • I agree. :)

  • cool. a male dancer.

  • That was REALLY good! My grandma was going to teach me to dance...but she got too old...and now my great aunts heirloom sword has recently disappeared =(
