I had one of these (sold it). You must preheat everything and still the shots will come out luke warm. Not sure why but I think the chargers somehow cool the water because I ground the beans first then practically boiled all the parts to preheat then quickly tamped and pulled the shot... The shot looked pretty good with lots of crema, but still warm. Don't get a Silvia (had two). Gaggia Classic pulls better shots. (add Silvia steamwand) You can get by with a Maestro grinder with Gaggia.
@klarinetta I'm wondering if they just didn't tamp it right, or if it's just not the right pressure delivered. Seems to have the potential to make a quality espresso, but having to go through a cartridge of Nos every time you make an espresso seems like a waste, and at the cost, you might as well just buy a single head espresso machine. I can see the convenience of a portable espresso maker, but at the same time, seems kind of pointless.
@BboyFlimsy first off, it was more like 20-21 seconds, not too bad. There are other videos on here showing a 28-30 second pour. Secondly, you get 4 shots from a cartridge. N2O cartridges sell for $9 for a case of 24 if you shop around, that works out to just over 10 cents a shot. Add that to a $150 device that can make a better shot than any espresso maker under $600, and it's a pretty good deal. If I start pulling more than 1-2 shots a day I'll save up for a Silvia.
@joetbn1 Thanks for the info. I never bothered to look into this too much, it's just something I saw on think geek. I think I'll look into this some more.
Not necessarily. Consider that a full-size espresso machine generates and uses a great deal of pressure to force hot water through the grounds. This device does the same thing but uses cartridges of compressed gas for portability.
@garbleduser Yes, Nitrous Oxide, not Carbon Dioxide. One brand is ironically called Whip-It and they are food-grade cartrtidges for use by pastry chefs for whipping cream and other things.

the twist uses standard gas cartridges, available online or at almost any quality kitchen goods retailer.

The gas cartridges are the same that power things like bb guns. Absolutely no danger.
