Actually large prime numbers are useful for encoding messages and other things that require high security encryption. I used to crunch for Rosetta@Home, but then they stopped distributing tasks for Mac OS X PPC.

I also participate in Distrubuted Computing, but not under BOINC, I run Folding@Home on my PC, it is old Pentium 4, it is slow but every computed WU will help :)

You're probably doing the same thing as I do, except the fact that yours is an independent program while mine is a job for the boinc platform.
